  • Video125.co.uk Our fastest Driver's eye view to date puts the viewer in the cab of a double deck Duplex TGV for a truly amazing high speed trip from the South of France to Paris NON-STOP. The 466 miles is covered in exactly 3 hours at speeds up to 200 mph (an average of 155 mph). The DVD is subtly condensed into 107 minutes but you will still see all the massive infrastructure as we speed from viaduct to tunnel and out onto viaduct again. Commentary is in both English and French selected in the menu.

We took this train last year and it demonstrates how behind we are in the UK for the very high speed services. Our train had two trains coupled together and the ride was smooth. One leg of the return trip was in the upper level seating. The last leg to Marseilles was at 200 mph so it is no surprise the French are so proud of their TGV's. We really can't wait for SNCF and Deutsche Bahn to come all the way to London St Pancras.

I've done this journey, and I have to say the video makes it look far more glamorous than it is!
(There was torrential rain when I did the journey, so I was travelling soaking wet).

Yes, by my reckoning Sydney to Melbourne would take about 3 1/2 hours by TGV. You do have the longest stretch of straight track in the world of 500 miles east to west towards Perth, imagine how fast a TGV could go along that!

That could happen anywhere I guess, truth is, less likely in the South of France than here in the UK...Regarding how glamorous the actual journey is, I think it is right up there for various reasons. With the non-stop train service from Marseille to Paris, once you are seated, you are not going to be joined by others en route. The high speed line goes nearly all the way and the duplex trains are roomy. Wander along to the restaurant car during the trip. (no restaurants in UK nowadays).

So I presume SNCF have quite a relaxed uniform policy?
For my company (in the UK) we need to have sustained high temperatures and an email from head office before we are 'officially' allowed to take our ties off.
And when you think of the Shinkansen . . . The staff on those are dressed to the nines.
It's an aesthetic point, and ergo not a particularly relevant one when you consider the excellent engineering and operational aspects of operating TGVs on LGV lines . . . But to run such a Premier service, I'd have liked to have seen the driver in a shirt and tie at least (hat and Epaulettes ideally! 😅😅).
