Saw a couple Gretsch Catalina Maple kits in both deep cherry burst and walnut glaze. Wish I could get them both. Oh, what the hell - you only live once! Gorgeous drums. That great Gretsch sound!
Anybody else notice at end of vid he has a different set? At end of vid Tom NOT mounted on bass drum, part of a 4 piece rather than early in vid he has a 5 piece with rack toms on bass drum mount. Did he get a Broadcaster and 2nd set?
inthapocket〉 it’s not a different kit! If you’d noticed at the end of the video, it showed all the drums Gary got and at the end of the video he had the 18” kick, 12” tom, and 14” fl tom set up!
I remember unboxing my USA customs. I had a ginormous boner. In retrospect, I'm glad the event wasn't captured on video like this. It would have been a little embarrassing.
I don´t know it exactly, i live in europe but am attending every his concert with mike landau or jeff lorber or anyone here in europe ..... he used to give some lessons in LA, his hometown .... don´t know if he gives a lesson in these days .... maybe yeah, if he has a time, it´s probably possible to call him
Like Miles said, Gary is also a good friend and a super cool cat with a lot of humility! I use to live in Phoenix, AZ and was easy to go and see him. Now I'm in Nashville, TN and it's not so easy. But when I can, I get out there and hang with him!
It's not hard, as Andre is far more famous. Also, he is the Gary Novak of drums. Name and field comparing has to stop. It's the Coke of restrooms... same thing.
Gretsch convince Terry Bozzio to switch to Gretsch. Seven hours later (lots of oooohs and aaahhs) Terry starts a mindblowing ostinatopardiddledoodledaadle solo and the world explodes...
Then Morgan Ågren switch to Gretsch... Five minutes later (Morgan says nothing, but Mats dances in a circle...) He starts playing...and a new world is made...all is good...
Your Yamaha and Sonor kits both sounded way better though, i like gretsch but they arnt even close to the best drum maker right now its funny seeing the aggressive endorsement campaign they are on. Remember the late 80s early 90s Tama owned the drum scene for a minute, as the 90s went on DW conquered the market, gretsch seems to be having a moment as theyve snagged a few heavyweights
I wish Gretsch would use modern drum building techniques to build their drums instead of 3 drunks in a warehouse. Ive bought 3 Gretsch snare drums in the last 3 years and the build was horrible. Out of round, holes drilled crooked, the cup washers on the inside so torqued they were crushed with jagged shards of lock washers hanging out. On my broadkasters, the rail mount was half ass installed because the threads were stripped, because the mounting holes were mismatched, and the claws that held the bass drum hoops on were digging in to the wood. Memphis drum shop bent over backwards to try and make it right, and supposedly DW was going to correct the problem so I went ahead and bought my third snare drum (to match color with my broadkaster kit) and the shell was so out of round they had to force the steel hoops on. Out of round shells is why I sold my Brooklyns dirt cheap. And besides, the head combinations from the non USA remo heads, that appear to be seconds made who knows where don't sound good at all. I'm back to playing Yamaha, and just purchased the Chinese made recording customs and they are 100% Yamaha quality drums. I'm so impressed with the new Yamaha maple hybrids, a just bought a snare drum, and may just go ahead and buy the whole kit to match. And Yamaha uses USA made REMO, not the cheap ones made who knows where that Gretsch uses. My hopes are before I get too old GretschdrumsUSA will get it together. Gretsch,if you read this I'll be happy to meet you at the shop where I bought them to go over all the flaws on your drums. Let's get these drums right so I can be happy playing Gretsch again
So basically we’re looking at a guy (good drummer by the way) who can easily afford a set like his but gets it all for free and we have to freaking pay...
Fair enough, Gretsch don't pay their artists, but each one of the kits that these drummers are being given equates to a saving of 10k for them, so I guess, it's payment of sorts. IF they're on a 100% deal, they won't be paying for any of their gear. Good for them. I'm just hugely jealous.
After so many years I still cannot understand why this incredible drummer has not worked as much as others who have a fraction of his talent, the only logical answer would be that he has some behavioural problems that make him less suited to teamwork/touring... But I welcome different explanations, and actually hope there are!
Im plenty busy my friend- not an addict, not crazy- just not as involved with the jazz scene nowadays. Records, movies, studio and my group human element. I am a part owner of a studio in Los Angeles that keeps me plenty busy with lots of different projects. Plus my golf game is way better the more I stay home. I took a different direction than just playing drums, i enjoy too many other aspects of music. Peace!
great to know, that's the answer I was hoping to hear! Balance is always the key, but you know long time fans tend to be selfish, what's available is never enough for them ;-)
"I took a different direction than just playing drums"... I just want to say, it's really great to hear that Gary. You're one of my favorite players, up there with all the innovators, and to hear that you can be a world-class drummer and still have a life is a beautiful thing.
Drummer drum unboxing events are more awkward than when your uncle sits you down and kind of sort of apologizes for touching you in a special place as a youngster.
He’s such a brilliant player. I’m really surprised he doesn’t pop-up in more conversations about brilliant players.
his touch on the snare is incredible
Gary Novak is one of the greatest drum set players........
Gary Novak- a total legend! Love his work with Chick Corea
After 5 +years he still plays this kit , sounds good indeed, I saw him playing it @ BP
Gary's a monster. Nice job Gretsch.
First heard him on Chick Corea's "paint the world" album. Mind-blowing
Gretsch drums is the real deal. Gary is awesome!!! Love it
Yeah Andrew, Gary is one of the best musical, dynamic, chop master on a kit today, one of the greats. Congrats!
I just found out about Novak and am beyond impressed with his playing style and percussion approach. He is definitely a percussion master!
☆☆☆☆☆
He's amazing!
Gary Novak, one of my top 5 inspirations and favourite drummers. Check out Chick Corea Quartet'sTime Warp! And so many others.
My favorite drummer on the planet.
Saw a couple Gretsch Catalina Maple kits in both deep cherry burst and walnut glaze. Wish I could get them both. Oh, what the hell - you only live once! Gorgeous drums. That great Gretsch sound!
Love his playing on Chick Corea "Time warp" 😊
Gary Novak is a beast!

His articulation is on another level
:-)
I would say GARY'S the BEST...
What IS that chop at 4:49???!!!!! Freakin' insane. is there anyone out there to write that out? Wow. Those Gretsch drums sound great!!!!!
The biggest mistake I ever made - selling my beautiful 24” Gretsch kit for a Tama kit....??????
Hold my beer: I even-traded my Yamaha TRB6 (6 string bass) for an Intel Pentium Overdrive chip in the mid 90's.
Gretsch make awesome drums, But my heart belongs to Tama.
The guy from Gretsch..... a young Burgess Merideth???
Will Gary EVER user the internal mufflers???
Gary Novak can now go and "Repaint The World"
slickingdom: You can’t repaint perfection! 😂

2:53 how many drummers does it take to mount a tom? lol
awesome! finaly!
" Gary Novak obviously took acting lessons from Vinnie Colaiuta......"
deadboy600 Any high end kit fresh out of the box will make you feel like this lol.
Gregory Peller thort same, Gary is one tasty drummer tho, as is Vinnie, this Un boxing thing is lame, these guys are better than that.
repose deadboy
deadboy600 i call bs, see my comment above. And they dont sound that great either
They dont sound that great....
What bass drum size is that, obviously 14 deep. But the diameter?
We made him an 18" and 22" for these drums. :-)
I remember unboxing my USA customs. I had a ginormous boner. In retrospect, I'm glad the event wasn't captured on video like this. It would have been a little embarrassing.
i know him personally, greatest guy
Is he teaching these days at all?
I don´t know it exactly, i live in europe but am attending every his concert with mike landau or jeff lorber or anyone here in europe ..... he used to give some lessons in LA, his hometown .... don´t know if he gives a lesson in these days .... maybe yeah, if he has a time, it´s probably possible to call him
miles 178 Oooh Oooh Oooh - you know him PERSONALLY? Wooow.
Like Miles said, Gary is also a good friend and a super cool cat with a lot of humility! I use to live in Phoenix, AZ and was easy to go and see him. Now I'm in Nashville, TN and it's not so easy. But when I can, I get out there and hang with him!
Gary Novak is the Andre Agassi of drumming. I'll let you figure that out. :-)
It's not hard, as Andre is far more famous. Also, he is the Gary Novak of drums. Name and field comparing has to stop.
It's the Coke of restrooms... same thing.
Is that a yamaha subkick without the head?
Jarmo Valmari yea.
Sweet!

All some people have to play on are tin cans and tin foil hats...
Eli: theres always one like you in the comments.... ;)
MrKeys57 What does “someone like you” mean
It’s the truth and why DW had to take over QC for gretsch
Why does this dude sound like Odo from Star Trek Deep Space 9?
They should like shit to me. He's incredible .
Id give my left arm to play like gary, but then again no, because id only be able to play def leppard songs
AKIN ELDES BU. YEDİRMEYİZ..
I would sell my soul to the devil to have one of these
So basically we’re looking at a guy (good drummer by the way) who can easily afford a set like his but gets it all for free and we have to freaking pay...
We dont give away our drums to our Artists. :-)
You don't get it, its an endorsement for their drums....HELLO!!!

I heard this cat on with Lee Ritenour. Simply amazing!
He is!
Great drums, great drummer, but the politics suck!
He's sometimes overplaying. I love his bass drum dynamics within the grooves, though. Love the studio stuff.
So you can give Gary some tips on how to improve his groove....REALLY!!!!!
He's demoing a kit, Lorenz. How could you be overplaying if you're NOT playing any song...?!
@@jas_bataille Was a general comment. "He's sometimes overplaying."
@@barrykastenbaum6372 Huh? Please read again, lol.
