I saw this iteration of the electric band live in 1994, not knowing that Weckl had been replaced. I was devastated at first - and then I had to pick my jaw up off the floor about 15 minutes in. I got to see the first electric band live as well ~1989.
I watch this about once a year, coming back each time to make sure I heard (and saw) what I heard (and saw). I don't think I've ever seen anyone play this relaxed with this kind of velocity and power. A complete beast. My ex-girl friend was a friend of Novak's and said he was the nicest guy in the world, which makes watching this even more amazing and cool.
There was something wickedly cool about this version of the Electric Band. And Gary Novak was a big part of it. This drum solo is still be a great solo in 2018. Fresh, crisp, groovy, (and intimidating in the best possible way). He is so underrated.
Yeah. I hated it at first because it wasnt Weckl :) I was such a fanatic of Weckl's..........up until I met him. But yeah, this version of Elektric band was cool. This and Timewarp were great albums.
I saw the EB around this time in Leeds, England - a small venue, and I was standing a few yards from Gary Novak...I couldn't believe how small his kit was, then quickly realised it didn't need to be any bigger.
Now it's clear where Tomas Haake got his inspiration for Meshuggah "Destroy Erase Improve" 1995 album from. Definetely, Gary Novak was one of them. Joey Jordison also adapted those 32s drum fills into his drum style.
Best drum solo on the history of music! The rudiments and fiils what Novak did in this solo at that speed are non sense. The Jazz, afrocuban and rock influence are the perfect blend. No body attacks a drum like him. The this solo positioning Novak in the three greats: Novak, Colauita and Weckl. I now , millions says Buddy Rich was the best drummer ever, but the reality is Gary Novak , Vinnie Colauita a Dave Weckl are the best drummers in history of drums
Gary is a completely different feel than Weckl, that is for damn skippy. His power, precision, feel and flow are ridiculous. He's like bringing a grenade launcher to a feather fight.
I wasnt a huge fan of any of the Elecktric Band albums with Weckl....but I dont blame Weckl, I think I just dont like the direction Chick was going with it. But, it does seem Novaks style got through to Chick in some way, because the albums with him are better.
He's fast, but Weckl is more musical by a huge margin. I'm tired of - crash, bash, how fast can I play everything and how many cymbals can I smash while doing it - solos. No dynamics, no spaces between notes, it bored me to tears.
Wow!!! Gary is so amazingly technically proficient and he drives the band so powerfully and tastefully. Without doubt one of the worlds top drummers.
FOR SURE! Check out his work on the Human Element album with Scott Kinsey , Matthew Garrison and Arto Tuncboyacian. AWESOME!
Gary rules forever man. I got watch him blaze that shit at that time. Humbling to any mortal.
He took the Vinnie thing and went left with it! I’ve been hip to him for a long while. Bravo!

Gary Novak, stupendous drummer extraordinaire. Phenomenal drummer.
My goodness, that 😳 was truly something out of this world. Absolute Stunning mastery and virtuosity on display. Ridiculous speed and groove. WOW‼️💪🏼💥

Gary is a completely different feel than Weckl, that is for damn skippy. His power, precision, feel and flow are ridiculous. He's like bringing a grenade launcher to a feather fight.

Gary Novak was the Marco Minnemann of 90s jazz fusion
Novak was a far more exciting drummer than Weckl
The drum licks and the fills. OMG... Dave Weckl mode kicked in.
nope, Novak mode: ON... He plays nothing like Weckl, he is on a league of his own

OMG 😮😮😮😮😮😮
Insane control...my goodness....planet?? 😵💫
@TatoArtavia Gary is totally most awesome drummer on earth, simple
No doubt! Undisputed!
God I never knew dave from the i.t. Department was a musician!
Ha! And I only knew/remembered he played for Alanis Morissette for a stint. ✌🏾

He was definitely on a mission

Quando è troppo è troppo!

All technique and speed. Awesome on its own but the comparison to Vinnie and Dave is ridiculous.
