Story I heard about the iron bull, the first torture device mentioned here, is that the inventor presented it to a ruler, and the ruler thought it was pretty fucked up, and so he forced the inventor inside and roasted him alive.

Fun fact: the inventor of the bronze bull was sentenced to death in his own invention due to the king deeming it too cruel. Upon witnessing the bull do its thing the king actually thought it was pretty cool considering it was designed so that the screams from the inside whistled out through the sculpture making them sound like a bulls roar.
The Bronze Bull is one of the most absolutely absurd and cruel things ever devised as a form of torture..people that complain about how rough life is have no idea have good we have it

My favorite has to be poena cullei the Roman punishment for patricide, they'd be sewn up in a leather sack with an assortment of live animals including a dog, snake, monkey, and a chicken or rooster, and then being thrown into water.

A friend bought a book at an airport and came back and said "I saw this and thought of you"...It was called the History of Torture. Not sure if he thought I'd like it or if he wanted to torture me.

The anti-torture impulse we have comes from western Christian civilisation. Some others developed some restrictions, but that is the main origin point.
The dudes with the a bombs be like, if they keep fighting we can get that nice lithium mine for pennies on the dollar. And sell legal pain pills to the survivors and losers. The cherry on top get paid to rebuild the dump afterwards and not do it.

Speaking of Cyrus The Great, Shane should read The March Of The Ten Thousand which is what I consider a "worse case scenario in war" which is being stranded about a 2 years walk from home and your employer has been killed so you had no payment for fighting this battle you marched from Greece to Persia for and every single major tribe wants to murder you.
The winter and sickness got most of them and when they finally got back, their numbers went from roughly 10,000 to 6,000
10k to 6k sucks but pretty standard deal for marching armies
@@TheJimmyplant I'd also like to add that the generals of the Greek mercs also got killed by the Persian general trying to barter for supplies on the way back. So they we're neck deep in shit, the only reason why it didn't go even more south was because the officer leading them was determined to get him and his men back the fuck back to Greece and had to think on the fly while on Oregon Trail's grueling pace setting.
