Great job I did a stair refurbishment job last week in oak. I use 30mm dowel to join the newel post.Next time I will try your method keep the good work going and sharing your knowledge with us.
Yo Del top video as always. I’m just fitting a set of handrails and newels in my house ( Victorian retrofit ). Anyway I’ve referred back to your videos time and time again mate they’re awesome for reference and have given me tons of good ideas. So this is just a comment to say a massive thank you really, top geezer 👍🏻
Oh yeah Dave🤩Trouble is, they are usually made for one off jobs, and just take up space in the shed, and probably never use them again😵💫Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there🖐I'm pretty set on staying with DeWalt for the table saw👍I've looked at all thr others, and in my opinion, the DeWalt is still the best👊They are just a lot of money💰 Cheers Del
Excellent work Del, I used to work for a company that always got stairs with stub newels fitted. Trying to drill a hole 125mm deep upright to ensure the newel would be plumb was always impossible and as you said with people swinging on them the balustrade was loose before the job was done.
Hi Kevin🖐You're comment made me chuckle😆as soo many new jobs like this, the newels were wobbly before the house was finished😵💫Crap design really considering how much, especially the bottom newel, get swung on🤯Cheers Del
Great video mate. I usually half lap the new newel onto the old then fit 6mm "collars" on all sides to cover the joint. Looks good and a bit of a feature. I like your jig method though, ill be giving it a go i think. Keep up the good work mate.
@MarkOsborne-l7b Hi Mark🖐Got a couple of videos coming soon bud🤞I've had a bit of a change in circumstances so finding it tricky to make videos at present😬Thanks for asking bud🤗
People always underestimate the amount of work involved in fitting a kitchen. A customer today was amazed that it would take 5 days to fit a kitchen with solid oak worktops.
Hi there🖐I think many people, over many years, have got used to skilled people being cheap, and they are now finding that good tradesmen are becoming harder and harder to find and are no longer working for peanuts🤔5 days for a complete kitchen and worktops is NOT a long time👍Cheers Del
I've done those in the past, newel extension with a turned spigot and a dowel. I'm not a fan of newel extension especially the one's from the builders providers. They always feel weak especially at the bottom of the flight where there isn't a wall to fix to or a returned hand rail. The way you did it looks stronger Del. A large Festool dominio would be handy as well in that scenario. Did you splash out on a new Festool vac Del. The little Bluetooth on/off button on the end of the hose must be a gift. I had a DW744 for Years, i sold it and bought the flexvolt tablesaw for the van. I bought the DW7491 around two years ago for the W/S. DeWalt make the best portable tablesaws on the market, 👍💪🔨🇮🇪🇮🇪
Hi TN🖐Thank for you recommendation about the DeWalt saw horses as I'm looking to upgrade mine👍I've had the Festool extractor a few years now, and it's the absolute best you can get, and with the Bluetooth remote on the end of the hose, it's perfect for cordless tools👊I really think my table saw is on its last legs now, but I just don't know whether to replace with the mains one or, as you have, the Flexvolt one🤔Hope you are well bud🤞and thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Morning T.C, those DeWalt saw horses are bomb proof and have served me well. I'll be squeezing the trigger on a Festool vac at some point. What model do you have? Is it about the right size for a van? My Makita vac has a 15 litre capacity and is the right size and weight for a van.
@@thetallcarpenter I'd recommend the flexvolt table saw for the van, great for the job site. Nice and light with plenty of power. DeWalt released 15ah flexvolt batteries recently so one of those paired with the flexvolt table saw would be a winner, 💪🔨🇮🇪
Hi there🖐You are absolutely correct about using the jig without the ply spacers on to make it easier to get a nice flat cut with the multi tool👍If I was to do a job like this again, I would go round and cut all the newels with the jig as you suggest first👊Thanks for watching and your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there👍You're right, it could be the brushes, but in the past it turned out to be either the motor field or the armature, neither of which you can buy anymore😬Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Hi there🖐From memory, I just pushed the joint together and then ran my handsaw through the 'shoulders' of the joint until they were close enough👍 (hope that makes sense🤞) Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter carefull, its a slippery slope...you will be making chopping boards from glued together scrap wood before you know it! I really found your hip/vally videos to be useful thank you. sam
Hi there🖐The joint had a 40mm wide trim fixed over it, plus it was all repainted in white👍It looked amazing when it was all done😎Thanks for watching 🤩Cheers Del

Good job....... very good, can't wait to see what it looks like (glass seems very popular now)
Hi there🖐You're right about glass balustrades🤔really popular at the monent👍Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
Nice one Del , I remember when the twist and Barely twist were all the rage in finishing carpentry, showing our age 😂🇮🇪☘️👏👍🏻
I'd say late 80's and through the 90's this was popular John🤔The same with coving and artex ceilings😉Cheers Del

Like your style Dell! I remember doing something similar many years back but hand jointed the buggers!!! I prefer your method by far!
Hi Kevin🖐It's easy to forget that back in the day, ALL these kinds of joints we cut by hand😵💫Thanks for watching 😎 Cheers Del
@@thetallcarpenter Yes mate, I remember having a number 4 and 5 plane in the bag, bit and brace etc... Seems like the Victorian era!!!

I may be wrong but if you took jig apart so fitted over post and lower than multi tool cut and flush with same bit. Lovely work as always 😊

Del the smell from your saw could well be the brushes, get them replaced for less than a tenner and your saw will run like new.
Hi there👍You're right, it could be the brushes, but in the past it turned out to be either the motor field or the armature, neither of which you can buy anymore😬Thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Nice, mind you most 90 x 90 newels come with a spigot/ peg I find
You're spot on Gavin👊Unfortunately not the replacement ones the customer got for me😵💫Cheers Del
