Hey friends! I finally got my pair yesterday. I wanted to report my findings and will eventually make a follow-up video on the TSAV channel. So, after 24 hours of burn, it is pretty audible how much the sound has already changed in the Yamaha YH-5000 SE. I have been taking some notes. The bass was very loose on the first couple of hours of listening, and the treble sounded a bit rolled off. I listened for a few hours yesterday, then let them burn in for another 12-16 hours overnight or about 24 hours or so of constant burn-in, and this morning, now listening again, the bass is much tighter, and the treble is much further extended. I suspect that the reports from NYC Can Jam and The Audio Store, which had them on display for listening, were due to a lack of burn-in and under-delivering current from an amp that is only capable of about a watt of power output (based on can jam user reports via Head-Fi). Stay tuned for further reports on our TSAV RUclips channel. P.S. I love these headphones, and I haven't been this excited to listen to headphones in a very long time. 🎉
Oh man. Great synchronicity. I just tried these headphones yesterday! To be brief, I have to say that the YH5000SE is the most unique sounding headphones I’ve come across in a very long time. For me, they had just one flaw. They distort in the bass region when you wanna listen loud (85-90DB). You can’t push them volume wise. A pretty big flaw for me, however I still don’t deny how uniquely amazing these headphones are. They are almost as wide and airy sounding as the HD800. So impressive. ❤
@prognuthead thank you! I want to buy a pair asap! I don't ever listen above 85db and didn't hear them distort I wonder if that was a defective pair?
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup definitely not defective. They really did sound very good out of the HDV820 amp I tried them out of. Try pushing them a bit. You’ll see. 🤝use the track “Angel “ by Massive Attack and “Somewhat Damaged” by NIN. ✌️
So I tried it yesterday and wasn’t able to reproduce the distortion on the higher-end amps I have in house, however, I was able to hear much looser, not as well defined bass on one usb dongle amp that is not at the same level as the other amps I have in the house. I wonder if it’s due to the current delivery of the amplifiers for the orthodynamic drivers @prognuthead?
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup thank you so much for doing that and experimenting. Unfortunately the only amp in house that I could or was allowed to try the YH5000SE was on the HDV820. I am surprised that that amp wasn’t a good synergy with the headphone. Hopefully it really does come down to your findings. :)
Thanks a million, Marcello. I kinda really want them now as well! I think I’d take them over the LCD 5. 🫢
@prognuthead So if the specs for that Sennheiser amp are correct, approx. 480 mW power output taking into account the amount of current potentially needed for most planar headphones, I suspect that the amp which was designed for dynamic headphones may have been underdelivering the current these headphones need. The majority of amps I have in-house are anywhere from around 600mw on the lowest end all the way up to 14,000mw, so I think there is more to the story we need to know from Yamaha about the current needs of these headphones, and I can't be 100% certain until I can speak with Yamaha directly it's just an educated guess.
Wow! You are so lucky to be able to experience and listen to this headphones.
Thank you for watching!
We are very intrigued by what Yamaha has achieved here. Thanks for the review 👍
Great review ! In a local audio show I had a chance to briefly compare the Yamahas against the Utopia 2022, the clarity on the Yamahas is exceptional without being harsh or sterile. I'm saving to eventually buy the Yamahas.
Thank you! I am also wanting to purchase them asap!
Thanks for making a video about these, especially the comparisons. I was really suprised about your comments comparing them to the lcd 5. I do like that they are easy to drive.
Also I dont know if you mentioned it, does the yamaha have any planar driver flex? That annoys me when some planars do that.
Thanks for watching, @Omega-hn3py. I heard no flex or crinkle from the drivers.
Got mine last month, absolutely fantastic straight out the box 👌🏻
Awesome!! 🙌 Congrats!
Nice review Marcello!
Thank you @Rhodey2952 !
How does the treble compare to the new Utopia? I find the treble wonderful on my pair and these sound intriguing.
I wasn't able to compare them unfortunately side by side @tiffanyflanagan1892 however generally speaking the Utopia 2022 is warmer more punchy sounding, with a far more intimate soundstage, with of course a Focal house sound. I really liked the Utopia2022 headphones too. Try to listen to the new Yamaha in a good listening environment if you can, show conditions are always challenging.
The design on these is 🔥 like ah Hd800S meets terminator. Meze gets all the attention for their beauty but these are mean looking.
Currently saving for a caldera but this would be a top 3 of desired headphones.
I hope you will get your hands soon on the ZMF Caldera. I've tried all high-end headphones but the caldera are something else 🔥
We don’t carry ZMF as they are direct sales but I did hear it at CanJam last year and I was very impressed with it. @x32i77
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup perhaps you could somehow obtain it privately and review it then 😃👍
I heard both the YH5000SE and the Caldera at the same show (CanJam NYC). For me it was a no-brainer. I bought the Caldera.
I just wasn’t impressed with the Yamaha. Not at the price.
How does it compared to electrostatic headphones? Could it be compared, in terms of neutrality, speed & textual, layering, soundstage, and most importantly, how much musicality and how natural to electrostatic?
Let me get back to you on this! I can give you better detail in a follow up video.
thank you for review
have you just said that Yamaha beat Meze and Audeze overall?
It all comes down to personal preferences @onchuber what is best for you might be different than what’s best for me and what we are wanting as far as looks, build and sound signature. I think there is a case for each headphone to say they are better overall for different listeners who value their headphones over the others. I like and enjoy all three.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup yes makes sense
Would you please share in more details in which aspects you prefer Meze and Audeze comparing this trio?
I prefer each headphone for their different tunings and sound signatures in order to have a different flavor to change things up. They are all fantastic headphones just different. The additional warmth of the Meze Elite is highly enjoyable and the mid-range focused sound of the LCD-5 is tremendous with vocals.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup right i see
thank you for insight
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup Any take on how those compare against Elites with angled alcantara pads? I'm not a fan of hybrid pads (they sound like 1/3 of the price of Elites with AAs), only listen with those.
I think, the new angled Meze earpads would narrow that performance gap between the Elite and the Yamaha.
Maybe so! I haven’t tried them yet.
Yamaha vs final audio d8000 pro Limited Edition is the comparison to make 🔥
These two have very different sound signatures the D8000 has way more bass with a much less technical sound and smaller soundstage. Both great headphones but aimed at different listeners. @x32i77 if I can get a pair of the YH5000SE of my own I will try to make that comparison video for fun.
I agree with marcello they are totally different hps. The Yamaha is still the better performer though imo but that doesn't mean much if you don't crave for that performance.
@@djhmax09 is the Yamaha a planar headphone ?
@@x32i77 Yes essentially. Yamaha uses the term orthodynamic but that term can often be interchangeable with planar
I can't watch it all I'm gonna end up $5k broker
Meze elite , hifiman susvara , zmf caldera ,hifiman HE1000se , Dan clark expanse , Lcd 4 . My point is , most of yamaha headphone price are from the built of those headphones and there name yamaha , even though yamaha was a giant many years ago but there speakers was always mid tier. They tried heapdphones but never could crack into the higher end and with these ? , no , the group i nentioned are much better for the price and performance , this is why top you tube reviewers dont care to try them all some did and end result 5000 not worth it when you have a group that has proven and is very good , Caldera to name one. Oh , yes and i didnt even mention the 800s because that one is below the group i mentioned .
All great headphones 👍
You don't have to like em, but I'm guessing you never even listened to one...
@djhmax09 true I didn't but I know history , yamaha been trying headphones and failed they make speakers also and failed but there audio recievers are great and their piano and motor bikes are nice also .
Tried them at a CanJam London show in its dedicated Yamaha boot. While a build is superb, the sound was so-so considering its price. Certainly not worth such a raving review.
It seems to be a headphone that people either love or think is good, but everyone definitely has something to say about the price 😂 Thanks for sharing your opinion; try to be open-minded and understand that different people enjoy different things, and if you heard it off a different chain you might feel differently. I respect your thoughts regardless, even if I don't agree. I have yet to listen to them sound as good as they do off a warm leaning tube amp either, and the pads make a significant difference in sound, too. Thanks for sharing your opinion.
@@TheSourceAVDesignGroup Yamaha presented their HA-L7A headphone amp too on which they attached these headphones. That stack is also very nicely build and according to one of the presenters, it's kind of trimmed-down version of their AS amp architecture. Again, while id does sound very good, I can not get rid of a feeling that within that price-range and even significantly bellow, there are much better combos out there. If you get a chance, check out a new Hedd Audio headphones. Imho, one of the most pleasant surprises from the latest CanJam show. The closest description I can come up with is that sound-wise, they sit somewhere between 800s and a new Focal Utopia. Thanks for your comment and keep-up with great work :)
The set I got was the worst HPs I have ever heard with respect to price. Obviously you don't want your headphones to be heavy, but the cheap plastic build quality was just awful. The sound was terrible compared to all my other flagships. Mine were sent back the next day, and I really hope mine was defective because I am so disappointed in Yamaha. I expected a lot better from them, having been a fan of their receivers for many years. Good luck to anyone willing to drop 5K on this junk. Yamaha, you better go back to the drawing board!!
Interesting take; I have heard this from a couple of people that didn’t burn in the headphones at all or were not giving them enough current. The headphones need close to 100 hours of burn-in. What other flagships do you own? @TheGreatMrBill , which is your favorite?
I think the $5000 question is how does it compare to the HD800S on decent tubes? They look and ‘sound’ like the HD800S but in a planar (circular) format
They are on an entirely different level than the HD800s @benjamincraig7198; the HD800s have a more exaggerated width to their sound stage but are anemic in the bass. The HD800s also has some peaks in the treble that are not an issue for me with the YH-5000SE. I also own the HD800s, and they are fantastic for the money, but the Yamahas are a flagship.
Are you going to get the new yamaha headphone amp?
Time will tell, but hopefully. I will ask the owner.
