Nitin ji, I am son of retd. IAF person who was defending western front ( Amritsar Airbase). I lived those moments when my father had left us in Ambala Cantt with his unit overnight. We were without trenches, my mother dug for us. Both are still alive by God’s grace. I could not make it to defense forces though was shortlisted in SSBs due to some medical test.Missed serving my nation as a Defense person. Thanks for posting such stories. Salute to men/ women in uniform. They die so that we can live. Jai Hind 🙏🇮🇳

I was six years old and growing up in Barrackpore army cantonment near Calcutta. My late father had later told me of a friend of his who was a Captain in the Indian Army and who was shot down by the Pakistanis while paradropping in Bangladesh. I do not know whether it was this paradrop or another one, but my salute and sadar pranam to all those who fought for India. Hopefully, Bangladesh remembers those who liberated them from the butchers.

My late father ( God rest his soul) was a few years from retirement from the army, and was rather upset since this war was an outright victory, and was not sent into operations. He was an old battle ax from the WW2 era, that took him to North Africa & then to Burma and saw campaigns of 1948 & 1965. We also had the honor of meeting Lt. Gen Inder Gill who was then Corps Commander at IV Corps HQ. This made an interesting vlog, set me thinking of a lot of things, also the manner in which India then introduced the 5 paisa Refugee stamp on all postal correspondence to help in collecting funds to take care of the refugees from East Pakistan.

True, India and it's ally won the the war, but Gandhi lost in the negotiating table. I believe a peace treaty was signed not even 6 moths after the war. All areas captured were returned and all POW's were released as a gesture of goodwill. No demand was made for apology , financial compensations or even trial for those who started the war. Victory was won in the field but lost in the negotiating table ! The recipient of the goodwill considered the act nothing short of cowardice and inferiority complex on part of India. What happened next-Siachen-Kargil conflict proved the point.

I knew of Tangail operation. But now I know the enormity of the operation. It was daring, gripping & fantastic. India must (continue) do such operations in future too, particularly in wrapping up operations, on a Force on the run (retreating) -as tying up loose ends is equally important as the war itself.
See the C-113 Packet aircraft in the photo. This was the workhorse in Chushul battle with China in 1962.

1971, India had a outstanding spine of leadership with Manekshaw and Arora. They also had the Jewish General in Jacob (Captain then). Then there was Sagat Singh as well, these were battle hardened leaders. Time and again, they've stood up and delivered. I bet against China today, they would have delivered resounding thrusts.
The core group of this leadership also won against the Portuguese and the Hyderbadi Nizam. A Parsi, Jew, Sikh, I think this was the essence of India, ever since then, I just see a decline in military leadership capabilities.

Hence was well aware of the ground situations. On return to his HQ, he did not have to wait for reports from the front line formations. He speedily decided on next ops & issued orders giving front line troops adequate time & denying reaction time to the enemy. This worked wonders for his Corps..

The bigger question is Is Indian Military prepared to conduct similar kind of Operations on both LAC & LOC??
India also lacks a dedicated "Marine Force" equivalent to US Marines that can be used to Win the Beaches of Balochistan.
Its quite evident that there is a need to enhance the Strategic airlift capability of Indian Special Forces.
I personally think its time for Indian Govt & Military to sign the deal for following equipments :-
    (1) "C-295" Aircraft under "Make-in-India" program.
    (2) V-22 Ospreys
    (3) MH-47G Chinooks
    (4) C-130J-SOF
    (5) CH-53K King Stallion
    (6) “MH-60S/R" for NMRH Role under "Make-in-India" program as its production line can also be used to manufacture :-
    (a) "HH-60W Jolly Green" for IAF's CSAR Roles.
    (b) "MH-60M" for Indian SFs
    (c) "MH-60T Jayhawk" for ICGS
    (d) "S-70 Firehawk" for NDRF & State Fire departments.

    An excellent docmentary.
I don't think the paradrop was the largest after WW2. The 1956 Suez War had a bigger paradrop by the British, French and Israeli side.

Dummy tanks , dummy tents, dummy warfare can pose problems. You cant waste a missile or bomb on dummy targets during war. JaiHind.
