Finally, someone with some good fowl breeding sense. For the record, I've been breeding Campines under a very similar breeding and selection doctrine for almost 20 years now, while also maintaining them to standard. That includes not only general survivability and resistance to common disease, but also limited reliability on grain (ie. selecting for high foraging ability). My Campines can thrive in conditions where most fowl would probably perish. No predator losses for almost a decade now save for very young chicks that wander away from their broody, so it can definitely be done. It amazes me that so few people are working on survivability traits, especially considering the number of people who claim they want to keep poultry on a free range system. Instead, they keep buying fluffy hybrids fown at the feed store and expect them to thrive on range. Definitely looking forward to reading your book.

I line breed just as you do, but my initial cross, to downsize large Games to bantam size was with a Dutch Bantam rooster. Now, the Dutch have white ears, which must be bred out, but they have the blue legs, similar conformation and feathering of Am. Game bantams. Personally, I think the better initial-cross for foundation AGB's is to use a Dutch Bantam, than the tiny Old English Game bantams.

My brother bred Sumatra into one of his lines. The chickens it produced were good looking farmyard birds. They wouldn't work well for my Terrorfowl line, but would be fine for someone looking to add wild instincts into a basic hatchery line. They aren't very useful pure. They don't lay many eggs a year, sometimes well belong 50 eggs. They're also extremely seasonal in their behavior patterns like a wild junglefowl. They're a good bird for crosses, just not good pure, in other words. Many American lines of gamefowl have Sumatra bred into them. They were imported heavily in the 1800s. If you encounter a strain of dark, athletic, chickens with multiple spurs, it probably has Sumatran in its background.
I don't. My chickens seem to keep them at bay on their own. The main sort of parasitic creatures I have to deal with are gut-related. It's not that mites aren't here. My dogs get ear mites and my hogs have had mange before. It's just that the chickens don't seem to have issues. I do worm them one to two times a year. With ivermectin if I can keep track of which ones I have and haven't dosed. Otherwise I use a pellet dewormer (Safeguard).
The patriarch of the line is right at 30oz or a hair over. Remember these are only 6-7 months old at the most. I won’t catalogue their weight until they’re closer to 18 months.
About 50 or more on free range, another 30 or so in breeding coops, and most months I lose no birds to predators. I generally lose a hen once every 6 months or a year. During the chick season I lose several chicks to snakes and a few to hawks. But I still have more chicks survive than die.
These are my show birds. They're for matching breed standards in the American Bantam Association for the American game bantam and the red junglefowl bantam. However, they are very capable of free-range survival. They're too fast for larger hawk species such as the red-tailed hawk. The main issue they have is will small accipiters such as the sharp-shinned hawk that specialize in catching song birds in flight. I advocate people consider these for suburban back yards where they really can't free range. The small size leads to little feed consumption and less space requirements for happy life for a full flock in a small coop. Yet they have the instincts to survive free range if you ever have to open the coop door and let then fend for themselves. My other videos cover my large free-range fowl of the body types and behaviors I recommend for 24-7 free ranging.
He died suddenly of Marek’s, having shown symptoms for a couple of months then the symptoms disappeared, so I wrote it off. But they it took him fast after the first fall cold snaps. That was when I started to connect Marek’s to genetics. It was following the Indo birds, that is, the Liege x aseel crosses. When I changed out Indo with Sherman and selected new Liege hens, the outbreak ground to a halt (there were several other variables that changed as well, such as me culling all factory-hatched birds and also culling all non-chicken poultry). Anything I suspected of being a carrier I culled. Anything that ever showed symptoms I culled. Then this spring I got to see the results. The new crop of chicks were so much more resilient.

Full-sized American gamefowl can take cold weather well. The Icelandic landrace is also an excellent cold-weather free-range survivor.

Seems like they would have smaller eggs, less meat, and probably easier to kill for a hawk.
