The Cold War isn’t as bloodless as everyone thinks it was. The 2 powers did the whole spy vs spy thing, while other countries were used as proxies in war.
I didn't know that anyone thought it was bloodless, it may have been relatively cold but it was still a war, millions of people died over several decades, it was nothing compared to the death toll of the "hot" wars such as the second world war, but it was far from peace.
Haha when I have my foil hat on it tells me Russia was trying to alter the moons position to cause a tsunami that would destroy America. Along with everything else, but, you know, they never think ahead.
it's like i've said before: "if you want something IN the moon, use the metric system. If you want something ON the moon, use standard units." you'd think by now Russia would have figured out lithobraking was not a valid way to stop a lander.
Some interesting trivia about Russia beating the US into space is, it was *entirely deliberate* on the part of the US. By allowing Sputnik to orbit the planet, including directly over the North American continent, without making any objection, the US set the international precedent that national borders don't extend all the way into space and forever, and that having an orbital object, such as a satellite with an Earth-facing camera aboard, cross over an enemy's land would be considered perfectly legal, so long as the object is *in orbit.* In effect, Sputnik is a large part of the reason why the USSR lost the cold war.

Fun fact: the Russian Luna 25 mission last year crashed into the moon as a direct result of US-led sanctions against Russia for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. They couldn't access western technology for a control unit to replace the one they already had on hand (from before 2022; it was faulty), so they had to build a replacement in house, and well there is a reason Russia isn't exactly known for it's superior technology. Meanwhile, Odysseus is alive and well on the moon. Saved by US taxpayers who contributed to the NASA Doppler Lidar sensors (that weren't supposed to be the main navigation sensors, but they were the only ones that were working).
All the topographers in nam and the surrounding region probably having flashbacks of Operation Linebacker II, and all the hard work they had to do to redraw the terrain maps afterwards. Granted, without us leaving craters all around the world, I am sure that a lot of topographers would go out of business.
I was a bit over 1 month old when Neil took his giant leap, and I remember watching the last Saturn V headed to the moon. Mom and dad were all excited, and i asked whats the big deal? They shoot rockets all the time... Mom said "they are going to the moon." To my 3 year old mind I assumed we had always gone to the moon, and we always would. Then the 70s happened, the 80s, and here we are with me being a gray haired veteran of far too many useless conflicts and we finally put something on the surface again. Just don't take me back to when plaid bell bottoms with polka dot huge lapel shirts were the fashion and every house had that green-orange stuff everywhere in it. I already have the cars from the 60s and early 70s, so I am good there.
If were being technical, the first ones in space was actually Germany in 1943. Achieved as part of an altitude test for the V2 rocket and achieved low orbit.
To be percise, first in space is an understatement. They also had the living organism in space, first man in space, and didn't they also have the first long term space station? But also, while we put the first man on the moon, their lunar rover or something was crashing into the moon at roughly the same time And its also the US, had they got their first we'd just change the win criteria to "first colony on the moon" or "first man to Mars" Love the work you put into these videos either way
The biggest achievement, imho, was that they got a pretty serviceable probe on venus that survived long enough to give us really good info. Im glad the soviets gave up on the moon, hard telling how many cosmonauts they would have had to erase from history before they accomplished that goal considering their record with moon probes.
>They also had the first living organism in space Huh, it was Russia that launched that V2 in 1947? Oh, no, wait, that was America, America did it first.
Akshually, Nazi Germany was the first country to put an object into space. They sent a sub-orbital V2 past the Karman line in 1944. The USSR was only the first country to put an object into orbit.
USSR: First object in orbit, first man in space, first man in orbit, first object in orbit around the moon, first object landed on the moon, first object landed on Venus, first space station. USA: First object on Mars, first and only manned moon missions, first exploration of the outer planets by probe, first object that left the solar system, fastest man made object ever, first fully reusable space vehicle (the shuttle), first private company to put objects into space. Europe: Closest probe to the sun thus far.
Fun Fact: The US could've been the first ones to space, all that was needed was adding a 3rd stage to our PGM-11 Redstone Ballistic Missile and we would've made it. However this didn't happen for 2 reasons: 1. President Eisenhower didn't want a military rocket to be used to launch the first man in space, besides being an SRBM to launch nuclear warheads, the Redstone was a much improved direct American decendent of the German V-2 rocket. 2. The technical director of the project and the man that could accomplish this was Wernher von Braun, and President Eisenhower didn't want an Ex-Nazi to be responsible ror the first man in space. In the end, the delays allowed the Soviets to get a headstart on many of humanity's firsts in space, the Redstone Missiles in the end would be heavily used for many of the US's early accomplishments in space including the first American in space, and Werner Von Braun was responsible for it AND many of NASA's greatest hits such as the moon landing. So While I love Ike, in this instance he held us back for months to years for nothing since most of what he didn't want ended up happening anyways, the only difference was now we had to play catch up.
My university had a student led project that went up to the moon with them. Was pretty cool to watch it happen live with an event center full of people.

"Sputnik Splash" sounds like a flavor Russia would give to a knock off Mountain Dew.
Unlike the moon dart that Russia sent last year. 😂😂😂
They finally learned about Lawn Darts and had to one-up us 😂
Haha when I have my foil hat on it tells me Russia was trying to alter the moons position to cause a tsunami that would destroy America. Along with everything else, but, you know, they never think ahead.
it's like i've said before: "if you want something IN the moon, use the metric system. If you want something ON the moon, use standard units."
you'd think by now Russia would have figured out lithobraking was not a valid way to stop a lander.
To quote papa buff “the moon’s haunted”
Some interesting trivia about Russia beating the US into space is, it was *entirely deliberate* on the part of the US.
By allowing Sputnik to orbit the planet, including directly over the North American continent, without making any objection, the US set the international precedent that national borders don't extend all the way into space and forever, and that having an orbital object, such as a satellite with an Earth-facing camera aboard, cross over an enemy's land would be considered perfectly legal, so long as the object is *in orbit.*
In effect, Sputnik is a large part of the reason why the USSR lost the cold war.
WOO! WE'RE BACK ON THE MOON! FIRST TIME IN 50 YEARS!

According to international flight rules at the time, Yuri Gagarin did not complete his flight. Records later showed that he was forced to bail out of his capsul. This would have been considered a crash, not a completed flight as designed.
Alan Shephard, on May 5th, completed the first manned space flight.
records later showed, that he ejected from the Vostok, LIKE EVERY SUBSEQUENT Vostok occupant. That was the designed means of surviving.

From what I understand Vietnam it’s actually quite successful, but I may be missing quite a few pieces of information
Saved by US taxpayers who contributed to the NASA Doppler Lidar sensors (that weren't supposed to be the main navigation sensors, but they were the only ones that were working).
how many unmanned probes have landed (or crashed. lol) on the moon in the past 60 years?

“Have I told you this week that you’re an asshole?” I do love the Russia character.
If were being technical, the first ones in space was actually Germany in 1943. Achieved as part of an altitude test for the V2 rocket and achieved low orbit.
To be percise, first in space is an understatement. They also had the living organism in space, first man in space, and didn't they also have the first long term space station?
But also, while we put the first man on the moon, their lunar rover or something was crashing into the moon at roughly the same time
And its also the US, had they got their first we'd just change the win criteria to "first colony on the moon" or "first man to Mars"
Love the work you put into these videos either way
The biggest achievement, imho, was that they got a pretty serviceable probe on venus that survived long enough to give us really good info.
Im glad the soviets gave up on the moon, hard telling how many cosmonauts they would have had to erase from history before they accomplished that goal considering their record with moon probes.
Really goes to show how being first doesn't mean nearly as much as what you do with the opportunity.
>They also had the first living organism in space

True, but it doesn't change the fact that the U.S. was the first country to send a manned vehicle into orbit and safely returned them to Earth.

fun fact, the soviet union was not the first nation to reach space, it was actually the "mid century germans"
Why has it taken us so long to go back to the moon? Because the first time we made the horrible discovery that the moon is not made of cheese.
Fun Fact: The US could've been the first ones to space, all that was needed was adding a 3rd stage to our PGM-11 Redstone Ballistic Missile and we would've made it. However this didn't happen for 2 reasons:

The trauma and PTSD wasn't only on one side, after all. Vietnam was like "NO, NOT AGAIN, NOT THE AGENT ORANGE!" on the inside for a good few second.
