One thing's for sure, it was a great publicity for Napalm Death at the time...and it still is!
I wasn't a fan of Napalm Death, but I DO respect them greatly for their contribution to Metal music.
He didn't say they were Thrash, he said he's been getting into Thrash and then says there is a band he found called Napalm Death. Thrash led him to Napalm that's all.

Technically no but there's a lot of thrash elements in their songwriting. Also they've done a ton of covers from bands like Kreator, Sepultura, Cryptic Slaughter, Hirax, Repulsion, etc.

90s were much better years, more relaxed, and people loved music for what it is, very close to the 80s. nobody was bothered about strictly labeling things, and sublabeling em again. like they do now. everything was thrash metal, everything was death metal. there were no genres of the subgenres of the genre.... if you know what i mean. no one would laugh the fuck out of you if you called something like obituary thrash metal or slayer death metal. not that it wasnt clear what was what, but nobody cared about that things.
of course everyone knows napalm death is an grindcore band with death metal period through 90s, and jim carrey may or may know what genre is what, all im sayin is it was not big deal then. there wasnt internet, there were no pansies in metal music that will scream if someone mislabel something. it was healthier time.
That's right, I think it has to do with younger generations learning this classic bands stuff through magazines and the internet; it's canon. So if wikipedia says Napalm is grindcore, that's what it is. Whereas the older guys discovered them at the proper time, where labels were more ad hoc and not so fixed.

When i was a lad Napalm Death started as a Hardcore band then added in some death metal elements to the music making it Grindcore, there is no death metal period for them, they did one album with a death metal producer which was a bit of a mistake but nothing they have done is death metal. They play a mixture of hardcore,death and a small amount of industrial music with hardcore lyrics.
Adi That's right . Why label everything . Label the music that moves you , with good marks . There is a band that I simply love . For the (among other qualities) highest genius of timing via polyrhythms ratio . The band is called HAKEN . Songs like Crystallized and The Architect are pure magic .
I remember those days. I remember when it was just Thrash, Punk, Metal, Deathmetal, Hardcore.
None of the post-whatever labels and every one hated "Nu-Metal" as it developed. Now people make up shit like Pornogrind, Power-Violence, beat down and other stupid fucking labels.
I can't stand it. There are three distinct forms of music for me and they are Good, Bad and porn sound tracks.
Jim Carrey loves death metal. Part of the reason Jim Carrey did Ace Ventura was because he wanted cannibal Corpse to do the scene when the band plays and the producer agreed.
In another interview Barney mentioned that Jim actually wanted Napalm Death to be playing in that movie, but they refused!
That was the first time I had heard a blast beat. I didn't even know double bass could be played that fast.
He wanted Napalm but they were on tour so he got Cannibal Corpse instead?

Ended up landing in Barney's arms , doing stage dive ( well , in fact I was catapulted upon it ) we did a couple of verse lines together, than I dove back down . Line-up included Brutal Truth , Carcass and Cathedral - epic!

Imagine if Napalm Death actually ended up in Ace Ventura Pet Detective? That would have been quite interesting, yet Cannibal Corpse fit the bill since the plot took place in Florida where the regional Death Metal scene was thriving, which was very befitting at the time lol

In the early 90's people didn't really know what trash even was, let alone grindcore. You had to read a lot of music journals to be able to know the distinction. Cut Jim some slack.

I remember that Jim Carrey interview when mentioned Napalm Death, he was still on In Living Color at the time so this was probably 1989 or 90ish, gotta admit kinda got me curious about it, had no clue about extreme metal until a couple years later, only thing is i've wondered which vocalist was he talking about, Barney Greenway or Lee Dorrian, to me he's describing Lee's sound more than Barney's so who knows i guess

I don't think terms like death metal and grindcore had been popularized very much at this time. Even thrash metal had only existed for a few years. It makes sense that they would have been conflated a lot of the time.
