Manta Ecuador: NOT what we EXPECTED (from this POPULAR EXPAT CITY)

  • Amelia and JP VLOG 234: We FINALLY went to Manta Ecuador and filmed it for this week's video! Yay!!!
We were REALLY impressed with Manta and we're already planning our next trip back to film more of the city. It is one of the fastest growing cities in Ecuador, and it's very popular with expats. If you want to live by the beach, but you prefer a modern city with all the amenities, this might be the perfect spot for you.
Having been to several coastal cities in Ecuador, Manta was not what we expected. It's somewhat of a hybrid between the large, commercial city of Guayaquil, and the smaller coastal city of La Libertad. Based on our first impression, it seems to have the best of both worlds!
Huge thanks to our new friends, Ryan and Tiffany from Ecuador Shores Realty (www.ecuadorshoresrealty.com/) and Hotel Oro Verde (www.oroverdemanta.com/) for making our first trip to Manta so memorable!

Unas buenas, y otras no tanto.

Great vid guys. Next time you visit Manta I would suggest to visit a "Super Tranquilo" place called San Lorenzo, which is 30 minutes by car. There is a good pop up restaurant called "Muya" (They will be open again in January) They could probably tailor a specialty menu for you, and the food is great, everything slow cooked in a wooden stove, but with a gourmet flavour. San Lorenzo has a 2 station "Mirador", and it is also a preferred sea turtle spawning ground. Just before you get to San Lorenzo, there is a beautiful "Natural Reserve" called Pacoche, you could do some trekking in the misty mountains. I really enjoy how relaxing and comforting your videos are. Be well.

Hello JP and Amelia!! I follow about 7 or 8 different channels on RUclips and about a week ago your channel came up out of the blue. The good news, I believe, is that both of you have what it takes to be successful on RUclips. While I'm not interested in moving to Ecuador, it is very interesting to see your journey and your life's adventure. The channels I watch on RUclips are all fairly different (Shawn James My Self Reliance, Wonderhussey, Nate and Kate, Sailing La Vagabond), but the common thread that runs in all of them is that the people are interesting. I call them TV people because the camera likes you guys. That's really about 90% of the battle. So it's fun to follow you and see what you are up to. I think the drone footage that you have added is really great, it's nice to see a birds eye view of the places you visit. I love your totally quirky opening, "Ole, unconventionals". It makes me smile every time. I think that needs to be on a t-shirt. I think it would be fun to hear you both speak in Spanish to each other for about a minute or so (with English subtitles) to see what you sound like in Spanish. I think your journey in Ecuador is filled with potential. Glad I found your channel.

I lived in Manta for a few months in 1998. One of the best climates in Ecuador, though admittedly I was there for the Dry Season. A breezy 70-80 degrees every single day - gorgeous weather. Just prior to my moving there Manta was EVISCERATED by the El Nino storms in 1997 that took a terrible toll on a lot of the smaller towns and provinces in Ecuador along La Costa (The Coastal region) - houses had been washed away by floodwaters, or buried in massive mudslides, with families sleeping in them in the middle of the night. Horrific. They just didn't have the flood control at the time to deal with the volume of water unleashed by those storms, but they seemed to have learned the lesson by the time I was there.
When you go back be sure to visit the Panama Hat shops in Montecristi, just about 30 minutes East of Manta on the way to Portoviejo. They still made them by hand when I visited, and there's a popular Cathedral there where "La Virgen de Montecristi" is housed, at the foot of an impressive mountain of the same name, visible for 50 miles in all directions (one can hike it if one chooses).
The Encebollado in the Manabi province is DELICIOUS. I also lived in Chone for a few months and visited Portoviejo, San Vicente, Canoa, Calceta, and Bahia de Caraquez often - beautiful little towns at that time, undeveloped for the most part, like going back in time. Don't know about now...? Ecuador was much more undeveloped when I lived there in the late 90s - horrible roads. It took 6+ hours in a rough bus ride to travel what should take an hour or two on a normal US Interstate. When Rafael Correa was elected one of the good things he did for the country was build solid highways that didn't exist before - reinforced concrete roads with proper drainage that could withstand their Wet Season. It was much easier to get around when I went back in 2009 for a few weeks.
You're living in Olon, somewhat close to another town I also lived in for a few months, Playas de Villamil (or just "Playas"), and visited Salinas, Ballenita, La Libertad often. There was a fascinating Museum/Restaurant in Ballenita called "El Farallon Dillon" that was opened by a retired Sea Captain with tons of Sailing memorabilia that's fun and fascinating. Don't know if it's still there but if so, you'd enjoy it for sure. Very Unique spot.
    I'm a blowhard, I'll stop now!

I've had Manta in my sights for quite sometime. An American friend of mine owns a construction company there called Ecuadorian Costal Properties which has been operational since 2006. He has kept me abreast of the ins and outs of living in Ecuador as well as the real estate scene. Though I've never been to Ecuador , I do plan on visiting, once the pandemic is under wraps. Here in the states it is next to impossible to own beachfront property unless one is very well to do. Ecuador seems to be a viable option. If I like the vibes, it will be where I'll settle. While I plan on establishing residency, living there will be on a part time basis only. Thank you both for another awesome video ☺

    Hello Amelia And JP,
Thank you for this Manta video. Overcast and windy! I like it! I also like that the city takes it's responsibility to keep the streets clean seriously.
Unfortunately, here in L.A., with reduced city services due to the never-ending pandemic, the streets are full of trash, abandoned cars, homeless tent encampments, graffiti everywhere. Just a terrible environment.
It's good to see your current scenes of a well kept city. In Manta, Ecuador!
Have a Merry Christmas in toned down Ecuador. Buy your liquor early, appears to be the word.
    Cheers!
    ---Eddy from L.A.

FYI, cycling is a prominent and growing sport in Ecuador. In 2019, Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz became the first rider from the country to win the highly prestigious Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) and finished 2nd in the 2020 Vuelta d'Espagna (Tour of Spain). This would be the equivalent of your local college team winning the Rose Bowl, and makes Carapaz one of the most famous Ecuadorian sportsmen. I noticed a graffito of his name in your video. A number of years ago (80s, sigh), I rode with Mario Pons, one of Ecuador's pioneering riders (first Olympian in Cycling I believe), and watched one night at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center velodrome as he put up the world's 3rd fastest time ever in the kilometer event. Mario was a very charming and entertaining fellow and a great ambassador for his country.

I'm enjoying your videos. My wife is from Quito, we were married in Quito, (honeymooned on the coast), lived and worked there from 1983-84, and go back every few years. I definitely prefer the "sierra", but everyone has their own preferences.

My mom was born and raised in Ecuador. She came to the US in the 80s and has been here ever since. I always used to go to Ecuador for vacation. I lived out there for a year and I’m planning on living out there. I love it out there. I was born and raised in the us but nothing compares to living over there.

After enjoying your "condo hunting" video, it was fun to go back and take in this one of your earlier impressions... Your natural "cadence" of "going with the flow" of the fun of being together... and sharing your delight with us...is very real...and that's one constant jolly little undercurrent that makes each of your videos the delight they are no matter what the topic!
(It's been fun to watch you guys progress in your comfort and confidence as you share your unconventionality with us. I wasn't "on board" when the focus was more on "the vegans who happen to be in Ecuador" approach...but I've enjoyed watching them. [I'm pretty close to you. Definitely Veggie-tarian myself...not quite where you're at...but maybe someday. = grin = ] And then to see you go on to reach a wider audience...even though you are very clear about what works for you and heartily recommend it...has been such a delight!) As always.... thank you for such great informative content, but most of all, for being "you"! You're D BEST!

@@AmeliaAndJP Like, you, I consider the inability to go out and eat Indian cuisine a loss... ha ha! I love it so much.. but around here (in the states where I live), there are many options, and ALL of them use quite a lot of oil. Have you, in your various excursions in the Indian restaurants you've visited, been able to get your meals without oil, or reduced oil content? I am missing my Indian food fix, but my guts can't take the oil anymore. (My icon photo is from a Jain temple in India.. oh, the food... oh, the beauty...!)

Great video. Great to see the new sites in Manta. I was there with the US Navy in 1981 and 1982 and then again maybe in 1986 or 1987. There used to be only one skyscraper which was a bank. It was about 10 or 12 stories tall. It was largely a sleepy fishing port then, and in the 1990's I think the US military went there in a big way for the War on Drugs operations, expanding the airport, etc. To have an Ouro Verde Hotel there now is something else. They used to only have a hotel in Quito and Guayaquil. I'm dating myself, of course...love your channel...always love Ecuador since my first visit with the Navy back in 1981! Quick funny Navy story...during a port visit, we had some sailors run off to Chone where they say the loveliest women in all of Ecuador come from. For days, we could not find these sailors...I even asked at the embassy if the CIA could help find them, but they could not be bothered about two missing, drunken US Navy sailors...finally, one of the Navy officers at the embassy who is Mormon heard through the church elders in the Chone area that a couple of "gringo" sailors had been sighted around town sleeping in the parks and looking for food. Their beer money ran out!
