  • Head to Head Match up Hero 8 vs Hero 12.
It was nice to try both cameras back to back with the Max Lens Mod as well!
After reviewing the footy I think the best POV is the chest with the normal lens and the 8 is comparable to that of the 12, but it was cool to see the wider FOV with the Max Lens Mod (MLM). Where I think the MLM lacks is the speed factor, it doesn't seem to really capture how fast you're really going with the MLM.
I think the MLM works well for the vertical POV tho especially mounted to the helmet and I'll likely use this POV in the future.
What was not capture in this video is the HyperView of the GoPro Hero 12 and that POV might just be the winner, especially for instagram 8:7

The 12 had better stabilization as an action camera (and a better picture - perhaps it's the saturation of colors right out of the box) but I didn't see a difference in stabilization when you were at a slow pace or even stopped and moving around. The 8 could easily be adjusted in post-processing for colors.

Obviously, the chin mount has the best stabilization. So in that regard, the 8 is closest to the 12 only when you have the 8 chin, 12 chest. The 12's image appears a tad sharper, and the image play back is quicker, where the 8 may seem to lag a fraction slower. I'm not a fan (personally) of to much wide angle. I want to see as pure "POV" image as possible. That's just personal preference.

Yeah I agree when the lens gets wider it gives less of the actual trail feel. I actually have come to prefer the way the chest looks but I just prefer the chin mount for ease of use. I do think the 12 is sharper but I don’t see the playback on my side, probably because I’ve just watched it all too many times.

Were you running the MLM V2? You don't seem to be getting the new improved FOV from V2. You can use MLM V1 but you do not get the full functionality. Not sure based upon the video if you have the V2 or not so thought I'd mention that V1 and V2 have different functionality with the Hero12.

It’s the new MLM, I just clicked the button on the screen that initiated the MLM but I don’t know much other than that. I kept it in SV as to keep the POV similar maybe that’s why? I’m not that stoked on how it looks the wider the FOV the more you lose the speed.

@@justin_niemi Yeah you need to give it a go in MHV (Max Hyperview) on the chest, upside down. I feel it gives it a super "warpspeed" motion blur that actually accentuates the speed. I'm not the fastest guy, as you well know lol, but it makes even my vids look good! I keep it at 16:9, 4K, 60fps, Horizon Lock on, MaxHyperSmooth on with some customized protune color / exposure settings that I stole from another video.

I don't see a big difference. 8 looks a little brighter, which might not be a good thing on sunny days. Upgrading to 12 is probably not worth it when looking at stabilization, unless there's another advantage that I'm not seeing.

v12 looks like droppin frames on my screen and it looks like your were much slower, probably due to different modes Not sure, but v8 looks better to me

The 12 w/ the MLM looks a lot slower but every lap was very similar time wise almost :50 on all 4. Droppin frames like it’s blurrier?

@justin_niemi Not blurrier but like it has a stop every few half-miliseconds which is then noticeable to human eyes.

My main takeaway from this video is that people who go mountain biking are nuts 😂
