- Clarkson, Hammond and May take to the roads of London in three stripped out track cars, to find out how practical these roof-and-windscreen-free cars are in the real world. Clarkson drives a KTM X-Bow, May drives a Caterham R500 and Hammond drives a Morgan Three Wheeler. Clip from series 18 episode 6.

One thing about this challenge which I love is that May's request for Caterham to add a heater and a windscreen was heard and added as an optional extra for all Caterham models.

@@itsallaboutme9779 KTM is the best bike in the world period. They win the Dakar every year and Jarvis on his Husqvarna wins the Erzberg Rodeo in Austria. (Huskys are basically KTMs since 2013)

It's been reintroduced as the "Super 3" but the old world charm is gone. It now has an internal 4 cylinder engine, and a bunch of modern features.

Exactly. That’s why Jetsons style glass canopies haven’t caught on. As it turns out glass, or even clear plastic, is terrible at keeping out the cold and the heat.

I saw a 3 wheel Morgan once driving along a twisty southern Indiana country road in the rain. It's owner had fitted it with a DuVall windscreen and the top and side curtains from an Auburn Speedster. Pretty sharp looking decked out like that...

@@Hazztech Douglas Bader was a famous English pilot during WWII and baader-meinhof was the other name for Red Army Faction , a far left terrorist group that was active mainly in the 70s in West Germany. Pilot goggles= Douglas Bader + coming out all covered looking like a terrorist= Baader-Meinhof Group.

The chemistry between these 3 is magic.
Only Caterham, but with optional windscreen, roof, doors and heater (all of which you can actually get, not all for the R500 though).

I love the Morgan but I want a full windscreen, and a reasonable attempt at a top, and a spare tire...all things the most classic Morgans all had previously.
Well, the three wheeler IS the most classic thing Morgan does. That's where the company started from, and those never had any kind of convincing weather proofing device.
Every classic Morgan 3-wheeler I have come across had no worse a bonnet/top than any MG TC/D/F ever had, something is better than the big nothing they come with today. Particularly with their proposed e-trike, talk about a useless toy without a top.
and all things the R500 could have come with if they'd asked for it.

Morgan three wheeler roofs were never in my experience very reliable. Whatever happens rain goes down your neck .

The X-Bow is actually a very common car to see in most parts of the US. From what i've seen, there's quite a few in northern Illinois and parts of Wisconsin. Even saw one while driving through Tennessee.
It's an anti-theft feature. Even with the key in hand it's almost impossible to steal that car.

Both Hammond and May would likely own such helmets for motor-bicycling, I bet they were told it would be much more fun if they didn't wear them. Indeed it was. For us.

As you probably noticed in other episodes of the series its not like they woulndt wear helmets but what i noticed in a lot of other shows (even bike shows) the presenters always have open face helmets or non so you can see their faces and know who is who. Also its more personal and bonds the viewer more when youre not covering your face while talking
This is my absolute favorite episode!

this is one of favourite challenges
that one is a racing model for use primarily on tracks. i actually was able to visit the shop in Caterham where they had a large garage full of 7's, well worth the look around. They don't build the cars there though.

These guys are so fun to watch..
That weather is looking wonderful about now, and about last month, and the month before that.
To be fair, when there's complaints of the weather on such shows it often isn't that bad, but in my opinion temperatures around 1° and heavy rain is about the most miserable weather you can get.
Intense heat, freezing temperatures, heavy snowfall, strong winds, you name it. Just around 0° and rain is bloody awful.
That weather is awesome.
There’s no trio more enjoyable to watch having a grand old time or being stuck in the rain 😂😂
It's the little things like them having a laugh and trying to do something silly like seeing if James can get the car started that made this show unlike anything else!
