- M. Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold joins Ted Stryker for another episode of Tuna on Toast. It starts with M.and Stryker having an indoor golf putting contest. In this interview, M. Shadows discusses the early days of Avenged Sevenfold, including playing the Warped Tour and the creation of the very famous Deathbat logo. M. talks about how much an influence Southern California was on their music.
M. Shadows also shares the great story of meeting their manager many many years ago at The Rainbow in Hollywood and how early on, Avenged didn't want a manager.
The guys do a deep dive on the brand new just announced Death Bats Club and what that means for the band and fans around the globe.
Stryker asks M. Shadows about new Avenged Sevenfold music and when we could possibly hear it, AND, when will there be Avenged Sevenfold shows!?
They also talk about the City of Evil album and how the band went next level (but after a shaky first couple weeks of the release) M. shares a story of how Good Charlotte helped the band..it's a wild story!
Stryker and M. Shadows also have a really nice moment talking about the late great Jimmy Sullivan aka The Rev.
This interview flies by, M. Shadows is a kind, selfless and cool dude who is also a super duper rock star! Thanks for listening and watching.

His voice sounds so much healthier here and he seems to be genuinely happy. Can't wait to hear the new album!
Im so excited, never know what to expect in terms of sound but they never miss
@@spiritboxyxbox I didn't really like the stage except for a few songs but I was still super excited to listen to it since you know those guys never do the same stuff twice. I'm definitely hyped for the new album.
nightmare for me was a level above, I expected something on the same level as the following albums
@@-xlntc91x- Agree, I think The Stage was too much. Nightmare is my favorite album, Portnoy did it great
@@-xlntc91x- I loved the stage. They really pushed themselves technically and conceptually. It was great to see from a band that has been around for so long.
This dude is my Idol. I'm super jealous you got to hang with him. I got to meet them 12 years ago on a tour, and he gave me advice about asking the girl I loved to marry me. I proposed to her to one of their songs. He's such a genuine, humble, and honest good dude
Tell me was it A little piece of heaven?
@@BlizzardWind99 how did you know 😂🤘
@@mototoad1242 You know I guessed that song too..
That's awesome. Matt LITERALLY bumped into me at a show roughly 15 years ago in a small venue that held around 300 people in Seattle. I was in the merch line as he was heading to the stage. My Chemical Romance opened for them and sounded NOTHING like they do on their albums.
Awesome. When I was in a band, we opened for them back in like 03 ; 04 or so, when they were still in a van. Good dudes.
Always down to listen to Matt talk for 45 minutes, awesome talk man 👌
It went by too fast.
A7X always ahead of their time and always thinking about their fans
@@HughWanztino ignored us? How? They've told us when to expect the album. Covid fucked shit up. No one seen that coming. Be patient. New music is coming.
@@HughWanztino Come on show some respect. They don't owe us anything and if they decide not to release music for even another 10 years it's totally up to them. They're very open and communicative with their fans - and for me personally, i don't know of any band/artist that does it at that level.
@@menamgamg motionless in white is another good example :p
@@menamgamg their communication shows their appreciation of their fans. The music is coming, enjoy what we have thus far, if it shows their growth like the stage did then the wait is going to be worth it and it’s going to be a fantastic record
sooo true, they gave me all the NFTs I could ever want!!! Wow me LOVE NFTS!!!!
I love Matt's centered attitude, and all the guys really. To me, that is one of the biggest reasons for their longevity and success (aside from just kicking total ass). Keep yourselves happy and healthy, first and foremost!
100% couldn’t of said it better myself!
his attitude is infectious! He's beyond talented, HOF status as a talent and HOF status as a human!
met him and Brooks in florence 3 years ago, couldn't have been nicer to me and my friend
@@fallito5965 very jealous. Told my wife yesterday if there’s one band/famous person I could meet it would be These guys.
Stryker is so respectful to his guests. ALWAYS does his homework on past projects and history. Not saying he didnt know it already, just you can tell he respects his guests so much that he'll brush up on the important stuff.
Such an awesome comment! Thank you!
Thank you for supporting Tuna on Toast! All episodes are available wherever you get podcasts! Good vibes!
This is easily one of the best interviews I’ve seen with him
THANK YOU!!
its so crazy that him and Val have made it for so long. Honestly an inspiration and i wish them and their all the happiness.
I think it was like 2006 I saw a7x, atreyu and slipknot at the Fillmore in Denver. Great show
Man this could have been 5 hours long and I’d watch every second of it. Love hearing Matt talk about stuff like this-everything from the beginning days of the band to their NFT endeavors.
Also after all these years I finally found out the origin story of the Deathbat logo lol
Watch the avenged sevenfold all excess documentary it explains the origin in further detail and it a fun watch
and I do not speak english and watch everytthing
He seems like just a genuine good guy. I've never seen anyone talk negatively about M. Shadows
i have, he suk
I think his vocal chords left a nasty review on yelp but thats about it
@@Garf2O 3 months late but this gave me a good laugh lmao
I can listen to Matt talk for days. Can't wait for the new album. Great interview
I was 14 years old when City of Evil came out. I saw A7X at the Warped Tour that summer. It was awesome, I'll never forgot it. 🤘
New A7X Album??!!
So this is what happiness feels like.
I also love how the are bffs and family outside of music. Matt comment about Brooks was amazing. "If you can't get along with Brooks Wackerman, there is something wrong with you"
Such a cool and down to earth guy. Great interview!
AHHHH CANT WAIT TO SEE A7X at the end of the month. Last time I saw them was 2011 and I was 18. Literally gonna cry my eyes out.
A7x is one of the best bands to ever play and it’s easy to see why they’ve been relevant for so long. Incredible music, really chill musicians, and a really positive vibe that everyone needs. !m!
His voice is back! Thank God! This new album is going to sound absolutely amazing!
What happened to his voice before?
@@SilversteinRescue He incurred some really gnarly damage after the release of the stage that led to a multiple-years-long hiatus of the band.
Doesn’t sound very healthy on the new song sadly.
@@Jwlar I think that he sounds even better than he did on The Stage. His vocal style is just… different than it used to be.
I wish his vocal style was more like it was on their self-titled. But, he wants to be more gritty in a healthier way, AND have that power-metal vibratto, like Bruce Dickinson. Well, he got it! Sounds healthy to me!
My boy is wearing a YEEZUS shirt? props homie
take ur time matt! the music deserves the extra time and effort
Man I love M. Shadows. He really inspires me.
a minute and a half in and I can already tell this is a promotion for their NFTs... at least there was an update on the songs.
Every time he smiles I smile. 😍🥰 I'm so in love with him 😩😩
I love that Matt’s wearing a mike Shinoda hat!
what i love about M shadows is.. even when he talks.. it sounds like he is singing. such a gifted dude.
Everytime I see Shadows smile , I smile
Well your face is gonna be numb soon, as Matt smiles propably when he's sleeping too 😂
I'm pretty sure I had a smile on my face this whole video.
I grew up on A7X since my high school days 03-04 I’m 33 now still rocking them until The end.
Hearing shadz talk about meshuggah makes my heart full. My two favorite bands
Love this! I love in-depth interviews like this where the artists get to talk about themselves in more detail than in shorter interviews, and I also love any footage where artists get to relax, act natural and show their personality. This is a great combination of the two.
Jacob!!! Thank you!
I think, matt shadow's sound, got a little better than before
The most important question needing answered is who does he get to hold his invisible melon when he takes a golf shot?
😂😂😂
Yeaahhh 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
I'm loving how much healthier his voice is sounding! Reminds me more of interviews from the self titled and nightmare albums. So good to hear!
Yeah I agree he sounds much better. He sounded like an old man a year or 2 ago when he spoke
love this conversation
Such a humble guy. Saw them in Ottawa in 2018 and this is still to this day my favorite show I went to
I didn't know the good Charlotte helping them out, I know they are friends and did The River together but that was great and sweet of them to take them on MTV, I love that so much. I got into A7X at the time of City of Evil and have loved the band since. I watch first time reactions to Avenged too. I can't wait for new music but I also am glad they can do it how and when they want, like he said they are human too. I enjoy the other stuff so much it will do for now.
@22:50 "If I own that Muse song..." Mind blown! Much more respect, M. Shadows!
i love M. Shadows
Matt's voice sounded a lot better now.. Good for him😊
I love to hear him speak. His enthusiasm and intelligence really jumps out with everything he says. This band is so far ahead of it’s time - proud to be a part of this A7x world 🤘🏼
Me and my stepfather really enjoyed hearing this especially since it’s are favorite band and it’s what connected us
that's so great you two connected over Avenged! Thanks for watching the interview!
@@TunaonToastwithStryker yea man keep up the work
My daughter is a fan fan . Seriously. We have seen avenged sevenfold every year they tour. I will be buying into this. Thank you.
I grew up in this bands music, now being 22 after dissecting every album and fully being able to appreciate the musical genius this band as a collective is, it agonizes me every single day that passes that I haven’t gone to see them 😭
What a guy! Oozes class, great interview - the balance of giving Matt time to get his points over whilst being friends and not descending into your private worlds was a nice touch (although we got small glimpses) bravo 🤘🏼
thank you, Ryan!
If I didn’t know M was the singer of A7x I would never believe it. He is one of the best singers of all time.
I know right! I've only started looking at his stuff recently after listening for like over a decade and man, i did imagine him being this guy. Super regular dude in a good way. I also thought he was gonna be older haha.
How can this man still being so hot after all these years... 😍 God just listening to him is gold
This man is one of the reason why I became a core kid back in the days
I'm impressed with Matt's understanding of Web3. He gets it.
Man.. I came across A7X when I was like 14.. the first song I heard from them was Trashed And Scattered. I remember being 14 and checking them
out online and seeing Shadows in his muscular prime thinking "holy shit this dude looks crazy badass".. after entering adulthood and seeing his
interviews lately it's amazing just how centered and normal he is. The dude seems extremely humbling in every single interview I watch.
I can't believe this grounded dude is the singer of Trashed And Scattered from my childhood. Life is weird !
“Burn it down” is still my favorite off that album.
Trashed and scattered live video is crazy!
Such an interview. Holy crap M was radiating!!!!! Thanks guys!!
I just randomly clicked because I saw m shadows. Big A7X fan. Might I say you are a great interviewer. very entertaining always engaged it’s very refreshing. Stayed for the whole video! Cheers 🥂
Thank you so much!
He is my favorit🥹❤
Man can you imagine if A7X made a metalcore song at this time in their career. That would be pretty cool, but I know that they always change it up on every record which is great because us fans could hear something fresh!
If they made another “WTF” I don’t think I’d know what to do with myself.
What type of metalcore tho? Like atreyu sounding metalcore or like attila (minus the lyrics) sounding metalcore?
@@travisspaulding9540 I mean if they went the Atreyu direction, I don't see that as a bad thing...
@@corekidkyle7028 I mean atreyu isn’t bad at all but I think modern metalcore has two very different sounds and those are the best I could think of atm to explain what I meant
Imagine the stage + wtf. Light prog metalcore? 🤔
I love this man, and I LOVE that he's wearing a YEEZUS tee 🔥
22.52 "if i own that muse song"..same matt same...if only :)
I'm 36 and i can't believe M Shadows is 40 years old. Damn time flies.
This guy, is so talented. Not only is he a great artist but also a visionary and has a planned way to carry himself forward in the future.
Really excited for the new album..
Power of positivity - He'd give a really interesting Ted Talk.
Its always nice to see Matt speaking normally. Aside from his aggressive singing he's so damn calm and i like this about him. 🥰
So great to hear from Matt
Thanks so much for this interview man!
Matt is such a down to earth guy ...love seeing them in concert...a group of very talented guys ..I just love how they have stayed true to their sound ..
Rock and Metal guys should be more open to the new world like this man. Understanding social midia and the new techs out there like NFT would be a game change in the industry. Respect for this guy
I remember being 13 and being at the front of the stage for their set after a few previous shows and it meaning everything to me. They helped me through so much and the fact that I got to bond over this band with my dad means absolutely everything.
My only wish and want from this interview was a section of questions about the Stage. It's one of the most inspiring albums I've heard. And I know there was issues with how they released it, and maybe the reaction it got initially, but for me and my band, a couple of friends too, we all absolutely adore it. From top to bottom. I just wana hear a bit of dialog on it from the band themselves. It's the only thing this interview lacked, otherwise, it was such a great listen. Great job
LOVED LOVED LOVED THE INTERVIEW 💙💙💙💙💙💙
Love Matt Shadow I am came from Indonesian 🇮🇩
AVENGED SEVENFOLD BEST ROCK FOR ME MORE 👍
He sounds so much different than in the music I've listened to
God I love him. There no line I wouldnt.cross
Yknow I'm not into crypto or NFTs in any way, but I'm happy seeing Matt be so enthusiastic about something new and exciting. Ultimately, the music and only the music is what I'm here for but I don't want the people making it to be in a bad head space or to get stuck in pandemic limbo, and if the time isn't right to tour now it just isn't. They can take another five friggin years if they want, I know it'll be good all the same.
the thing is other bands are in tour... I live in Porto Alegre-Brazil, in the south next to Uruguay, and Metallica came here two weeks ago. And Music is different than tour.
Second Heartbeat has the Greatest guitar solo along Hotel California and Comfortably Numb
Bat Country and Critical Acclaim both have the best calming transsitions from all music in general
Clairvoyant Disease it's one of the most Atmospheric dark songs of all time, an example it's that You can compare the song with Deftones - Change that's real Atmospheric music
Well these are some facts in honor to M. Shadows and his powerful band Avenged Sevenfold. Just some true geniuses that helped me with their Masterpieces when i was on depression.
Also special thanks to I Won't See You Tonight Part 1, a song that comforts my soul everytime i feel so mentally break.
Clairvoyant Disease is such an underrated song, one of the best in my opinion. This band has helped me so much too.
So glad to hear from m shadows! Great episode!
He is such a pleasure to listen to. Love him and can't wait for the new album, I can feel it's gonna be a good one!
I always loved a7x and M. Shadows ❤️ he's so professional, so great and also a family guy, all at the same time. It's amazing.
Such a great interview!
this is sick... havent kept up with a7x since city of evil.... but what he said about socal is so true. i was involved in the hardcore/punk/metal live show scene since the early 2000s and those bands and venues shadows named brought back memories. when i first heard a7x on kroq, i instantly fell in love with the futuristic sound. then i researched and found out they were metalcore/hardcore influenced (i looked up their early stuff on p2p music sharing programs)... but im glad to see m is staying modern and influential.
Such a great interview! Why doesn't this channel have a million subscribers? Common guys!
I appreciate the love! Tuna in Toast started in October, thank you for your help is spreading the word!
@@TunaonToastwithStryker Oh I completely understand. I'm only trying to encourage watchers to subscribe. Great material here. I appreciate what you're doing!
Thanks for the interview :)
This was a great interview and hopefully the fans that felt weird about the Deathbats Club will see it!
Shad doesn't do a lot of interviews so this is a real treat! Thank you! #foREVer
Completely raw interview. Nothing is better than keeping it "real". Thanks! Now to help us older middle agers out on the fan Deathbat NFT's. Idk what I'm doing😖😂❤️
Sooo happy to see A7x growing up
Honestly haven’t listened to or followed a7x since I was a kid, and I found City of Evil in my car the other day and started rolling it. Matt seems like he is in a good place, makes me happy to see! Hope the other dudes have stayed on the up over the last 15 years!
Solid class act, intelligent, hell a front man in a great band. Can't wait to hear some of the new material from A7X. Keep living the dream you guys earned it!
Well, at least now we know the album is coming… someday. Eventually.
I love they are both super nervous during this interview. Look at the hand motions and placements. As it goes on they both get relaxed.
Happy to see you Mat and please, visit Montreal in your next tour. I'll be 200% there.
I am A7X INDONESIA 🌹
One of my favorites interviews from Shads.💜
Amazing interview 😍😍😍
Excellent interview! I'll be keeping an eye on your channel from here on out.
I appreciate that!
Best episode ever !!!
Great interview!!!! This was awesome!!!!
thank you so much
Awesome interview in every way :D
This is a fantastic interview
Matt's such a great dude. Seems to be genuinely happy right now and its well deserved. Cant wait for the new album. If only you worked for me 😅
Man his voice sounds soooo much better, this pandemic helped save his voice
great interview, also good energy listening to M shadows and he is just cool dude. of course always great stage performance, rather them take time than go to fast.
Really enjoyed this.
