  • XL bully dogs are now banned in England and Wales after a spate of serious attacks linked to the breed. From February 1, it is a criminal offence to own an XL bully dog in England and Wales unless the owner has a certificate of exemption.
Under rules that came into force on December 31 it is illegal to breed, sell, advertise, exchange, gift, rehome, abandon or allow XL bully dogs to stray in England and Wales. They must also be kept on a lead and muzzled in public.
More than 30,000 XL bully dogs have been granted exemptions from the ban since the crackdown on the breed was announced on October 31, according to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). To qualify for an exemption certificate, owners must apply by Thursday and will need to pay a £92.40 fee. Owners must also prove that their dog meets certain criteria.

No quite right. Snakes and Tigers have always been snakes and Tigers whereas XL Bullies have been bred specifically for strength and violence. It is a man made manipulated creature built entirely for ending life. They are not cuddly pets. There is an underlying bred in instinct to cause huge amounts of damage or death given the right circumstances. You may be okay for years but there is always that chance it will fulfil its instinct one day when the right set of circumstances occur. When that happens it is carnage time. Why create or breed such an animal? Just look at them. They are weapons. Why would owners want such a dog? There are 1000`s of other variations of pooches that are harmless. They are not the same breed. This would require a rather lengthy explanation to cover in its entirety especially since there’s so many pictures on the internet these days of “American Pit Bull Terriers” that fit more of the standard of an “American Staffordshire Terrier” but they are now two very separate breeds of dogs. There are American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, “Pocket Bullies”, and now “XL Bullies” The latter two are actually crosses (although some will debate this) of different breeds to create a certain look. Various mastiff breeds and English Bulldogs primarily. Technically, they are not at all true “Pit Bulls” You will rarely ever see a true “American Pit Bull Terrier “ that is “blue”. I do believe there was perhaps one noted I believe from the “Eli” bloodline (if you google Eli bloodline Pit Bull you will see the true to type APBT) but the color was a fluke. A genetic mutation of the gene that causes the black coat color. This blue coat color became popular around the late 90s/early 2000s and was bred from Staffordshire Terriers. Dogs were then bred exclusively for this coat color. Although many were registered as “American Pit Bull Terriers”. I have owned both breeds many many years ago so I speak from experience. Today, I have no real interest in any of the above mentioned breeds or breed types but I personally do not think they should be banned. I think the key is responsible ownership. Unfortunately any dog that looks “tough” can often draw the wrong type of people (irresponsible people) to it. If these dogs are banned, irresponsible people will just start breeding another breed of dog and ruin that too.

The XL Bully is a primed volatile weapon. It can't help being a weapon but all the same it is a weapon. Its aggressive hunting, fighting instinct cannot be changed. You can change certain behaviours but never basal instincts. I have heard so many people defending these dogs. Why? Why take the risk? The fervour that they defend them with and even when presented with facts about the dangers they continue to quite aggressively deny. These people also concern me. There a billion and one other flavour dogs to choose from why on earth take any risks. It doesn't make sense to me

How is a tiny puppy a threat to the public, seems cruel to me. In 100% agreement with this dog owner. The people that cause the problem will continue to be poor dog owners not servicing the needs of the breed. Like many laws, they won't be enforced and the problem will continue at the expense of the needs of dogs such as socialisation and running exercise. Most XL bullies I've encountered are calm and well brought up and under the control of their owners. That said, I accept that dogs are unpredictable, if the owners don't pay attention to what's happening and people get bitten. Dogs will bite/nip other dogs and that's part of dog world. Dogs can act like a pack and attack vulnerable dogs that are fearful. It's horrible but that's dogs for you.

Any dog can be dangerous. I have 3 rescues and one is a Shih Zhu Lhasa Apso cross. He has a bite on hi that I would defy anyone to release themselves from. I know this because when I walked him one day round the lake, he picked up a chicken carcass that had been left by fishermen. I had to stop him breathing to get the carcass out of his mouth! He is 16 now and rather old and arthritic! I had a huge German Shepherd before these rescues and people were terrified of her and yet she was the sweetest kindest most gentle dog I ever had . Loyal and so easy to train. These so called bully dogs are NOT bullies, they are reflecting what their owners are. Bad owners! I believe responsible ownership should be applied to these dogs just as any dog of any breed. If anyone reading this owns a dog breed that you would like to continue to own, you may likely agree as well. There is a poem that was once written that goes along the lines of… FIRST THEY CAME for this but it did not apply to me so I did not speak up. Then they came for that and it did not apply to me so I did not speak up. Then they came for me and by that time there was no one to speak up… I think that’s rather fitting to breed specific legislation. When one breed is banned, you can be sure OTHER BREEDS WILL FOLLOW. Then perhaps dog ownership all together…

What a beautiful dog, great owner! I love to see these relationships and as a pitty owner myself, I know what it's like to be afraid of them, but then realize they're such lovers.

No suck thing as a bad dog breed, Only Bad Owners.. and the XL bully ban gives what the dog looks are that makes them a bully breed.. I don't agree with that as alot of dogs fit the description of the XL bully ban 😵😵 I have a cane corso and she fits some of the XL descriptions as do alot of other breeds. 😵😵😵😵

Whats funny now is people see an XL and suddenly think their life is in danger, as if they havent been walking past them their whole life and been absolutely fine

There is nothing wrong with this breed its the humans its humans that make the animals the way the are all animals need love and understanding and patience and good parents like this lady.

People's fear should not override peoples right to live freely, you don't blame kids for their behaviour, you blame the parents, same applies to all pets, treat them well, and they'll turn out fine

You do not apply the same logic of parenting because animals are still animals and are more inclined to follow their beastly nature than humans since humans are capable of reasoning.

This argument is ridiculous because all dogs can kill regardless of size but the right owner makes a loving dog. Dogs are not born to kill thats thr owners fault for no knowledge of how that breed is.

This is anti-American! Yes, our dog breeds are badass, but that is no reason to ban them!

Most bullys are soft and gentle.
