The issue is that the community around Lego is mostly focused on making realistic MOCs rather than making something that is functional yet not necessarily representing ideally a real vehicle. That's simply because it's easier for most of the people to tell whether you did a good of depicting existing vehicle rather than looking into someone's MOC's construction, mechanism, techniques etc. So we end up with big models that barely move and don't have much functions over something that is medium sized with a lot of functions, but isn't looking like a real car. Also because of the above, if you make a MOC that isn't based on some real vehicle, even if you have perfect execution and visual composition, people will argue it looks bad because it doesn't look like vehicles of specific type. And Lego is most likely looking at that if we end up with more licensed builds than cool car models that have more functions instead of licensing fees.

A person who doesn't know anything about Lego technic or cars, will be equally impressed by a good looking build and complex mechanisms especially after showing them what it does. My 8x8 Lego technic MOC looks terrible at the moment but the sheer size, and power make it very impressive. Thanks to its design, it can climb a FIFTY degree hill which is insane to watch. Also, the electronically controlled sequential gearbox changing speeds looks complex and is satisfying to watch. Sure, someone who doesn't know stuff about engineering prioritizes looks but mechanical things can be equally or more impressive and also fun

I'm not sure I agree with the idea that Technic has to sacrifice aesthetics for functions. I always thought all the Technic sport cars looked like squarish boxes on wheels and only recently, starting with the GT3 RS, they went a bit bolder with the panel positioning at weird angles, rendering a more interesting exterior shape.
I think they evolved to a stage where they introduced enough panels so that you can create beautiful curves that will never be available in Creator. While Creator can pull off a good looking Mustang, which has a more bulky design, a modern day super car will never look good made out of only Creator parts. Remember how LT started with super simple vehicles sometimes with just a few beams for the chassis. After that, they slowly started to fill in more and more gaps by designing those panels, even the motorized supercar you keep talking about is kind of at a middle stage of evolution, so still has a lot of gaps.
Now I'm not saying all sets should focus on aesthetics and panel work, sure, the functional vehicles like excavators and loaders ARE functional and will always get functions over aesthetics. But to request functions over aesthetic from an 18+ display focused supercar set... seems inappropriate and I don't know what to say. I think the race/sport cars should remain in their separate area which is heavily focused on looks - clever panel connections, rendering the curves of the real vehicle as close as possible, simplification (so using fewer panels that look well connected instead of more panels one on top of another that look broken up with a lot of gaps in between) and of course the basic functions of the real vehicle, like opening doors, hood, trunk, suspensions, steering and such (it appears we're already ignoring all those because they're so ordinary now, so nothing fancy when it comes to let's say 4x4 drive, right? which was barely possible till they introduced the new steering hubs that allow for more movement in the towball joints). Having a motorized hood or trunk or even doors is kinda weird if you're looking for realism... very few cars have any of that electric.
So, imo, you want functions, buy a crane, tow truck, excavator, loader or anything in that category. You want looks, buy supercars. Easy! There's nothing to fix, really. I don't think every set is addressed to everyone, like I wouldn't buy the pullback sets, especially the Monster Jam series, which I think they're a joke for older audience, but they're probably fun for kids, maybe that's why they have different age range.

When I see vehicles like the Ferrari, I just pass them up, because even though they look great, there isn’t much for it for someone like me who wants to make complex alternate builds.

Before I was into Technic, I actually quite disliked its aesthetic caused by prioritizing function and would not have bought a Technic set. If I was presented with a modern, form-over-function set, however, I would’ve been more interested. I think many people think that way, and that’s why LEGO recently has been prioritizing looks. Since branded sets sell more, Lego will produce more. If you're a big car company that wants to produce their likness in a lego form, looks are going to matter more than functionality. Take Ferrari as an example. As a company that prides itself on the beautiful designs of their vehicles (which can be translated into lego), as well as their performance (which cannot be translated into lego easily) you get a sitation where looks are more important than function. More people will buy a lego Ferrari that actually looks like a Ferrari than a shell with good functions. Or at least, that's my theory.

    • @Unbrickme

I quite like the cars and planes. We didn't always have special parts to make Technic sets look this good. I remember when they were more or less skeletal suggestions of what they were intended to be, so this is a great evolution in my eyes. I like identifying things down to make and model just by looking at them.
While it does make sense to have a gear box for multiple functions (Racing Jet), I don't need or want one in every set. If anything, I wish they would make a more realistically proportioned wheel and tire to perhaps improve steering response. Some classic rally car sets would be great as well.

As someone who bought the Sian...I dunno. I don't agree completely. When it comes to licensed cars, I think it's MORE important to nail the look. I love Lamborghinis. I'll never afford one in my lifetime, so toys have to satiate me. The Sian was right up my alley and I jumped right on it. Had aesthetics been sacrificed(It already has a few concessions to the real FKP36 anyways), I wouldn't have been interested. The fact that it's the best looking Lamborghini Sian in Technic is the biggest selling point to me.
While I would've liked to see more...I do wonder what more do cars REALLY need. I'll admit it's fun that the 2011 super car has motorized features but the look of the car is so barebones and doesn't have that "super car" look. I think lego is at a place where the parts library is extensive enough that we SHOULDN'T sacrifice aesthetics. I'm actually of the mind that the Senna is a fantastic representation of good and adequate features yet still being as accurate to the car as possible. I would like to see Lego do more accurate racing slicks for these cars and lower the ground clearance a bit more, but baby steps.

  • @sagarisfiorano
    @sagarisfiorano 3 года назад +1

I don't agree with your opinion. You try to fix every "problem" by saying it needs a gearbox to command multiple functions. I could agree on this approach on some other-than-cars builds, but absolutely not on cars.
    This is why:
    1) Have you seen some 90s Technic car sets? Steering (mainly HOG), classic moving pistons engine, differential and that's it. 8440, 8230, 8408, 8437, 8432, etc.
    2) What functions do you want to include in a car? If you want to "build for real", you need to have some functions that can be replicated in a Lego model. So you need some real-life functions that consist of moving big parts of the car. Only things I can think of are: (speed) gearbox, piston engine, suspension, steering - which are already used in big sets. And maybe moving rear spoiler (also it's the case on big models) and folding roof. Other functions in the cars are mostly software, climate control, etc. - these can't be replicated in Lego.
    3) Building in the unrealistic functions is not the way. I own the "fabulous" 8070 and it's not the best experience ever. Changing "gears" (i.e. functions) is complicated because you need to put your hand in the cockpit, switching on/off the motor to start/stop a function as a pain in the ass, because the movement of the function is too short. Motor-operated opening of the bonnet and of the scissor doors is an unreal bullshit.
    4) One knob to do everything is not realistic. Ok for motorised non-car sets where you want to economise and not putting many motors, but not for cars.
    What I would suggest instead:
    1) Lego Technic is making too many car lineups that cross between themselves - Car transporter sized cars, pull-back motor cars that mix up now with the green Mustang and Formula-E; 1:10 (Porsche, Ferrari) sized cars and finally 1:8 (Porsche, Bugatti, Lamborghini)...
    2) I would separate pull-back cars from the licensed products (as these are more for the children)
    3) I would widen the "world" of the car transporter - garage with a car lift for example - so you can have sets with tools and machines to do something with the transporter sized cars. Imagine each new set coming with such a machine and a new car. Each of these cars should have this small "piston" engine and HOG steering and be really compatible, not like Senna almost too long for the transporter. Also all the new tools and machines should combine technic and system pieces to enable cars really run on them (not like on transporter where cars cannot really run on it without lifting them in the air)
    4) 1:8 cars are the pinnacle of the Technic, both functionally and from the design point of view
    5) 1:10 cars could be more playable but also design pieces as they are. Suspension, piston engine, differential, steering with additionnal HOG knob(to increase playability) + opening doors, bonnet, trunk are essential. I would like Lego to work more on the suspension so it does not look too high (as Ferrari does) - maybe introduce some geometry to the suspension
    6) Introduce new types of cars in the 1:10 and 1:8 lineup so it's possible to show new functions (mentionned above) with manual operation. => As an example, I built a MOC of Porsche Boxster Spyder with 6-speed manual gearbox (gear stick really bows to the front/rear/sides - you do not move it in a line) and the roof is foldable with the mechanism replication exactly the movement of the real thing.

One real issue here is that they are staying in the same rabbit hole as Hot Wheels annual mainline segment: too - many - real - cars. With Hot Wheels, it isn’t that big of a deal. But with Technic and their internal functions, it’s something else entirely.
Get rid of licensed cars. Since with them, they need to get the appearance accurately (because they are licensed, duh), which sacrifices functions. Once again, 8070 Supercar proved that. 8070 was a fantasy car, and it was a BRILLIANT at it.

the functionality sets and the aesthetics
functionality sets would prioritize well, functions, in place for looks, something like 8070. great functions with essentially bare minimum looks, or having alright looks but having holes/spots to clearly see the functions in play.
aesthetic sets would prioritize looks over functions, such as the ferrari 488 gte, or the 1:8 supercar line really, has little functions, wether it be opening doors, spinning superstructures, extending booms, moving rear wings, opening hood, whatever, small manually operated functions but said set has good looks, probably made as an 18+ set as it would literally only be good for displaying.

I disagree with this video. There are many ways to appreciate technic Lego. Form, function, play, display, manually operated, motorised, remote control, smooth surfaces vs appreciation of the "blockiness" of Lego. Neither of these is superior to any of the others. It all depends on what the individual enjoys, and even then people can enjoy different things in different sets. It's a bit like food: some people like spicy food, some do not, and some like both occasionally. There is no need to "fix" a recipe to make it more spicy. Variety is the spice of life.

They make these little pullback car with no function. Why can't it be LEGO System? I like the idea of big licensed cars because they can fit a lot of stuff in there. But little ones make no sense to me. Old Technic was better before all these "little pullback cars" existed. $50 is outrageous for the size. The Senna GTR has 2x the pieces of the Porsche and looks cooler, yet it's the same price. Just LEGO is doing it all wrong.

great movie! I agree 110% more functions less attention to the appearance which comes out disgusting anyway through stickers, headlights with stickers ... or new Technic (Ford Mustang) with 4+ drive

Agreed. I was a big technic builder when I was a kid. From that time I have the space shuttle and the super street sensation for refference. I recently decided to check out lego technic again and bought the Volvo 6x6 Articulated hauler. I must say that I am kinda disappointed. The set is way less fun to play with and the functions are downright janky compared to the two old models I mentioned. But sure, we got pannels and custom big pieces to make the looks "realistic". Honestly, I prefer the old look of studed techic (or at least pre-panel stud-less). And don't even get me started on the stupid app that is needed to control the thing. Its so janky and crappy that I feel like the truck can only be used to like 50% of its potential. Goddamn software ruined technic as well....

Personally I think LEGO should separate Technic Cars to its own line and get back to basics with Technic - heavy machinery, planes, helicopters and other - well, you know, TECHNICal stuff.

I might have to disagree with you. While it's true that lego technic should incorporate more functions for the sets, it shouldn't need to sacrifice the looks as adding more aesthetics symbolized the progression of lego technic sets over the years. If lego technic sacrifice the aesthetic in favour of functionality, it will be harder to attract newer customers as it won't look quite as good visually. That said, it will be better for lego technic to find a way to incorporate both aesthetic and functionality on the sets. That's just my point of view.

  • @undead.rising

Simply solution - make more unlicenced sets. If it doesn't **HAVE** to look like something in particular, then they are free to focus less on "realism" when it comes to aesthetics, and dedicate more of the piece count to functionality.

I don't think they all need to be the same. But pull back stuff should be left in 20-30 sets. The new Mustang brokey heart. However i only buy technic cars since i love cars.

Yep. They put all eggs in the appearance basket. They should sell at least one cheap not license set with motors and gears per year. It would be fair;P I never had chance to get that super car.

I think those below 200 should favour playability and looks over fancy gearboxes and the likes. So a car should have motors allowing to use it as an RC model while an exacavator should have motors to control movement of the arms and so on. Distribution boxes are fine for construction vehicles as you can use one motor to do many things but I woudn't bother with cars. Basically: a good cheap technic set to me should look good and allow easy and fun playing: the "technical" details should be reserved for bigger and more expensive sets.
Alternatively, they should provide two different sets for instructions within the set: one to make a vehicle that has all the fancy gearboxes and the likes and one that sacrifices that "boring" stuff to turn it into an highly playable RC model. This way the "adults" can look into the details of mechanics whereas children can just play with them. And once played with one, they can disassemble it and build the other one and double the play time of the toy.
Also: RC-focused models should be robust and the motors should run fast... what's the point of a sports car model if it doesn't go at least at 12Kph...

LEGO is not interested in long time builders! They are only interested in new builders, and bloody fanboys. That’s why they only develop simple Technic sets, a marginally competent eight year old can build blindfolded. Plus they want you to buy only new sets, and not to build new things from your existing sets. That’s why they so often throw in a plethora of parts in different colors you can barely use in other builds. They mostly even eliminated B-models. And that goes for all their themes, not just Technic. I’m waiting for LEGO to buy Re-Brickable just to shut it down, and sue every MOC creator!

Lego Technic must return to its foundations. Functionality over aesthetics and not necessarily sacrificing both. Lego Power Functions, more gearboxes should return, that's the challenge of Lego Technic at different difficulty levels that leads you to grow with it.

It would be great for more advanced builders and long-time fans of Technic if they implemented your ideas, but at the end of the day, they have to pay salaries and get profit. I think now, for experienced builders, MOCs are the way to go.
