  • "Broken Arrow" is a track from Robbie Robertson's 1987 self-titled album. The album won the Juno Award for "Album of the Year", and producers Daniel Lanois and Robertson won the "Producer of the Year" Juno award, both in 1989 as there were no Juno Awards held in 1988.
Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around
Do you feel what I feel
Can we make that so it's part of the deal
I gotta hold you in these arms of steel
Lay your heart on the line ... this time
I wanna breathe when you breathe
When you whisper like that hot
    summer breeze
Count the beads of sweat that cover me
Didn't you show me a sign, this time
Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around
Can you see what I see
Can you cut behind the mystery
I will meet you by the witness tree
    Leave the whole world behind
I want to come when you call
I'll get to you if I have to crawl
They can't hold me with these iron walls
    We've got mountains to climb
Who else is gonna bring you
    A broken arrow
Who else is gonna bring you
    A bottle of rain
There he goes, moving across the water
There he goes turning my whole
    world around

Robbie continues to teach me things even in death. As I mourned I stumbled on this song, not knowing he wrote it. I left a "Phil and Friends" show somewhere on the west coast with this song stuck deep in my skull after hearing it for the 1st time in the early 00s. Since then I've been giving Ready Kilowatt full credit for that beauty. How did I miss that for years?
In the year's after The Last Waltz I listened to Danko and Helm, but I didn't follow Robbie onto the reservation musically. Now, with a heavy heart I head for Hoopa Valley first, I'll keep lookin' til I find his spirit running with the last of the wild horses.

First ever heard this song was the Rod Stewart version, which I loved. Recently however, since Robbie's passing, I purchased 3 of his solo records. Now my heart breaks. I love this version so much more...and now enjoying all of the man's music. Thats Peter Gabriel on the piano! Just gorgeous. Makes me so sad that I'm only now discovering the music of Robbie Robertson...and that it took his death to get me to notice. But, the older we get, the more we slow down and listen, and the more we learn. Very grateful.

It is great that Robbie is both First Nations Canadian as well as Jewish as he can draw on being part of the wider North American culture but can still pull from First Nation feelings and culture. He can go into both worlds and relate. Being a First Nations person also gives him an authenticity other musicians cannot relate to as well. I was 18 and living in Ottawa when this album came out. I used to hear it on FM but because it wasn't "mainstream" enough and he was 44 at the time I did not appreciate it as much as I should have back then. Pure genius and a concept album. He sang and wrote from the heart, not to try and write popular "hits" like younger acts did in 1987 and still do today in 2018 like Drake, Katie Perry, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna and others.

This is incredibly beautiful.... the arrangement has just the right mix of order and chaos, space and texture ... Robbie's voice is perfectly imperfect - rough, elegant, sliding, sensual, emotional, present. And the lyrics - beautiful antithetical metaphors juxtaposed with the raw yearning of the heart and soul, instinct and spirit.

I remember a rainy day in 88, when we were young n still in the business of romance. I was sittin there on the old back steps. I had a little perfume bottle and a bowl of rain. It took over an hour to get an inch of rain into that bottle. So I went in an gave it to Ed, my husband..."A bottle of Rain" I said. And he just smiled and tilted his head as if to say. "Of course it is". I'd like to say we made love...but I really don't remember...but you had your ultimate prize...a bottle of Rain. The rain let up, as happens in Texas and you went to work at the Plant the following early morning, which also happens in Texas a lot. You were just a little late coming home...no worries. But when you came in the door, I was SHOCKED to see u carrying the feather end of an old beat up Broken Arrow..green, it was. Your story was that you saw it on the shoulder of Hwy. 225 and pulled some awkward driving tricks to get to that arrow. Because, u were prone to lack imagination [ur only missing magic], I have never had reason to doubt. We had given one another a broken arrow and a bottle of rain. Years went by..I sought after them Drops of Jupiter, and you rode "The Ghost Train" with Jupiter Ray. We were broken apart by the lures of the world. Ten tired, disillusioned years later, we were in the same bed, holding our grandkids. So much livin behind. And you were only 54 when the angels took you away from us in 2014. Our daughter and I passed by to say farewell, and she, being 35 put a large bottle of Rain in your hand and laid half a broken Arrow beside you. She gave me the feather end.

It does seem more genuine, not just words but...."hot summer breeze", "count the beads of sweat that cover me" lots of poetic nuance from RR's genius and out through his pores. Perfect.
