  • We had electrical issues in the past when our AC kicked on at a campground with less than optimal power. You can have similar issues when running off a generator. That’s when we started looking into the Soft Start. In this video, Ryan shows how to install the Soft Start, which will decrease the initial kick coming from the AC once it’s turned on. You’ll be able to plug into a 15 or 20-amp household outlet or a smaller generator and still run your AC.
A 15,000 BTU AC is now capable of running on a 2,000-watt generator.
As with any install, please carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidelines.
    Where to find:
www.softstartrv.com - go under Menu tab, click Install/Support, scroll down to Wiring Diagrams & Instructions, click on your AC manufacturer

Be careful around the capacitors. They store energy to start and run the compressor. One wrong move, and you will get a jolt.

Thanks for the comment, Tim! That's a great tip that I should have mentioned. It would be best to short out the capacitor to prevent the possibility of getting shocked.

How do you short out the capacitors?

Short the postive side to ground, you'll hear a tiny pop. Use to have to do this repairing CRT's in the past, just use a screwdriver or something with an insulated handle

Why not put the soft start inside the panel? Nice video. Very helpful.

I'm glad you liked the video! To answer your question, I definitely feel like you could put the soft start inside the panel. I chose to put it outside because there was more room and space to work with. The wires have to go through the panel anyway and the device is almost 100% waterproof, so I wasn't concerned with my placement. After having it installed for almost a year, I haven't had any issues or concerns. Thanks for watching! Subscribe if you'd like to see more!

Did the same install this week, I pulled the black wire from the compresser and brought it in the closed housing. Cant test mine yet too cold here in Montreal

Can't blame you there! You'll have to let us know how it goes once it warms up enough to run the AC.

Would have been great to see how you put those screws in with no room.

Unfortunately, it was too difficult to record and screw them into the tight space at the same time. I only used 2 screws as the 3M double-sided tape (included with the unit) secured it by itself.
I reinstalled the Soft Start into our new 5th wheel with just double-sided tape and I haven't had any issues.

What did you use for power. Or are you at a park?

When I installed it, we were plugged into shore power. Now I use it with lithium-ion batteries. It has worked flawlessly.
