    2000 Watt generators can be affordable and lightweight, but can they run your air conditioning? We install and test the SoftStartRV device to see if it will allow our $550 2000W inverter generator to start and run our 13,500 BTU Coleman Mach 3+ air conditioner. Don't forget Step 0 - disconnect all power to the RV! Watch and see if you can 'do-it-yourself' and our final mixed results. We're not professional installers, so for install advice on different A/C models (including FAQ's and support) visit www.softstart.ca. FYI - We only provide authentic reviews and remarkably do earn a small commission if you make a purchase through softstart.ca. Please support us if this is a product for you. I mounted the soft start in the compartment with the capacitors and didn't have to mess with pulling wires through the grommet as everything is in there. Super simple and out of the weather. Great video.

    This would be fantastic for Overland rigs and some boondocking!

    This is a pretty neat system. It'll definitely be handy for boondocking. It also gives me more reason to step up to a more powerful and portable genny for the added versatility to run the A/C. Nice.

    Hey Perry Mack, I just wanted to let you know I installed the SoftStart yesterday. I found your video guide on RUclips very helpful explaining how to install it. Oddly enough we have a very similar A/C unit so the install was almost exactly the same. I haven’t tested it out yet because I’m waiting to finish the break-in period on my generator and will be able to test it next weekend when we go camping. I’m pretty confident it will work with our generator. Anyways, thanks again. Take care.

    Couldn’t find the brand of my AC unit but the wiring was identical to yours in this video. Super straight forward and works like a charm!! Thank you for your creating this video!!

    Extremely nervous of RV electrical connections, but you made it so easy and boosted my confidence. Thanks. We have a 13000 BTU running off a 3650 Watts Genny.

    You need a 3000 to run an RV ac unit along with the soft start. It will work for single ac perfectly.

    I use the Powerhorse 2300i generator and it works great on my 15K Dometic. I could actually run it without the soft start but it was hit or miss to get it started.

    Have same Mach 3+ also bought a Champion 2500watt generator duel fuel, 1680 watts on propane 1850 gas. Think 1680 is enough? Good simple video, thanks for being honest about 1600 watt shutting down, always awesome to see honesty

    There's a difference between the "Soft Start" system and the "Easy Start" system. There are literally hundreds of videos on RUclips demonstrating how to install either one of the systems. One model seems to be preferred over another; at least to electricians who professionally install mobile solar/battery systems on RVs. They routinely install these starters on RV's a/c units so that inverted lithium batteries can run a/c without a generator. You'll have to make the decision on your own which system you want to buy.

    2KW won't live long pushing a 14,000+ BTU A/C. The RUN DRAW is more than 1300 watts and portable 2KW gen-sets are RATED for 45% CONTINUOUS draw (read the UL/CAS tag!) and 105% SURGE. The inverter and the engine don't have the proper COOLING for more load. Move up to a 3.5 or 4 KW gen-set and it should LAST more than a season. The Coleman 12,700 BTU Mach One with a soft-start added can live with a 2 KW, or the Dometic 13,100 (soft-start built-in). I've played the RV A/C gen-set game for nearly 50 years now AND the no CURRENT land-line hook-ups at RV parks! 30 AMP plug but not even 15 AMPS or the breaker would trip! When you can't use a 900 watt "George Forman" type grill with your 185 watt 'fridge in a VW CampMobile, $25 a day electric is a rip-off!

    Thanks for the vid i was wondering if a 1700watt firman could run my 13.5k Ac but I think I’ll stick to the 3300/2700 firman

  • @Tom-Fisherman

    I wonder if your issue was ANOTHER load on at the same time tour AC is running. Make sure your AC function is OFF, and propane ONLY is suggested on your fridge. Second, is the Power Inverter (runs off AC to make 12v unit that charges your batteries) is off, by its breaker. These two loads can/will be too significant in current draw to allow for the 1600w generator to have enough capacity for the SoftStart to work when the compressor cycles every 3-10 minutes or so. The trick is to ONLY have the 30a master breaker on and the 20a AC breaker on! Then make sure your Refrigerator is set to PROPANE ONLY, NOT automatic which puts the AC on the primary AUTOMATIC choice---which is bad. The reason i am 100% sure this is your problem, is that the softstart worked once!!!!

    I am a little confused... you connected on 2000 generator to start your AC. Wattage draw on your AC... maybe 1400 watts?? but the one gen. couldn't keep it running? Thank you

    • @ericstainz9072
      @ericstainz9072 Год назад

      I believe the 1200 is the running watts, which the gen handles, but without the soft start to spread out the peak draw of what would be 2,500 watts draw for a brief moment when the compressor starts up. Nobody else answered you, I hope I’m correct.
