I started watching this video in my car as I was waiting for some heavy weather to pass so I could drive on, and the difference between the original speakers and the upgrades is clear even on a phone speaker. When watching the video again through some decent monitors, it is even more incredible. My fav is the BV30H, that speaker sounds fantastic!

Glenn, I literally just found and bought a used 6505+ today for no other reason than to try this because of how neat it sounds after watching this video yesterday. I told myself I wouldn't do anything with a 5150 or anything in its direct family and what you demonstrated actually made me reconsider it. If nothing else, it will be a neat project amp and I'm stoked to swap out the speaker (I know it's a little thing but it's always weirded me out since I thought soldering would be involved and that's a skill I never actually developed). Thanks man! :)

Glen! Thanks for making this video. I don't know if you saw my comment on your first video of the 6505 combo, I had suggested this very test. As I had said, if the room is small, often a small combo sounds bigger than a half-stack even WITH metal tones. Sometimes there just isn't enough space in the room to get all that air moving by a long-throw 4X12. Thanks for the video. I thought it would be a great option. Now you have scientifically proved it. Thank you Glen!

I tried to like it back in the day and wanted to like it but quickly found out it was inferior to fane, celestion, and eminence models. THE SPEAKER IS THE FILTER. You deserve more business sir.!!

  • @guitarzxt1
    @guitarzxt1 Год назад

Glen, after watching your first video on this amp I decided it was time to leave behind the solid state Marshall I've been playing since high school and get a big boy amp. On your advice I bought one of these for $400. The sound was disappointing at first, which I knew might be the case ahead of time knowing what you had said about the speaker and what I had read about the speaker on forums. The original speaker is not even a real Sheffield, as Sheffields are made in the USA, and this is made somewhere in China. After changing out what I assume were the original preamp tubes (V1 and V5 were toast) things definitely improved. And most importantly, I got a new speaker made at the factory in Eminence, KY, about an hour from my house. Now, it sounds like a real amp! Fronting it with a tube screamer clone really helped too.
I found the original speaker to be muffled and ice picky. If you like a cheap knock off of a green back with scooped mids (on an amp known for its mids) really fizzy highs, and farty lows, the original speaker may be fine for you. As for me, my 6505+ proudly wears an "Eminence inside" badge! Lots of people have replaced the speakers in these with a V30, or with an Eminence Governor or Swamp Thang. I didn't do any of those, because I didn't want to sound like everybody else! But what I did put in there sounds good.
You haven't mentioned this in either of your two videos on this amp, but I think it is important for people to know there is a bit of an issue with the FX loop. It is not transparent. Many people complain about it, but some people like it better. However, this can be fixed very cheaply if you are any good at soldering and know what parts of the amp to stay away from so you don't get shocked and die.
As a side note, because a certain angry, long-haired Canadian would have told me to, I did an A/B test. I'm glad I did too, because at first I couldn't tell much difference between the speakers, but listening back to back shows they are quite different. Let me know if you want the files Glen, and I'll send them to you.
    Thanks! Loving the new amp!

I’ve got one of the 212 combos cut into a head, and let me say. This is totally true. I have tried it will several different cabs, and the speaker is definitely the factor holding it back. The G12T-75 is a good speaker, the bad reputation comes mainly from people not knowing how to use them. Like every other Celestion speaker, its sound shifted in different eras, probably due to production choices. I love how it sounds combined with a good Greenback, they're from the same heritage so they mix well, however it adds depth in the low end and bite in the high end, while the Greenback dominates the midrange.

Just as a side note: speaker polarity only matters when using multiple speakers. If you switch the polarity on one speaker, it will be in opposite phase to the other and cancel it out. The same is true when using multiple amps and/or cabs: make sure the polarity is identical on all of them. When this is your only amp, the polarity on the speaker matters not.

I have a PRS MT15 and run that through the PRS-MT112…….but I pulled the V30s out and replaced with Eminence DV77. Love my sound! ESP EC1000 with Dimebucker to Maxon OD808 to MT15 with ISP Decimator and Sonic Stomp in the FX Loop. Simple earth rattling tone. Wanted a Cockblocker but was late to the order and now I just can’t find one.

9:50 I actually prefer the sheffield. But then again my favourite speaker is the T75, which everyone shits on nowadays despite it having been used on a billion classic metal records

Yeah I have two Marshall quads loaded with them from that era when I brought the cabs. One thing I really like about them is that each quadbox is rated in total at 300 watts with them inside! Would I ever run a 300 watt per channel power amp into them? Probably not, but it gives one confidence that you're not gonna pop it!

this video annihilates any argument against the amount of sonic change one can expect from swapping speakers. good on you, Glen! this argument can now be laid to rest.

My 2x12 cab has some custom built Ted Weber Legacys in it that my buddy consulted me on buying, and then ended up selling to me cuz he got a vintage Traynor amp and cab. Every amp I've plugged into it (and I tried quite a few) all agreed. They like the Weber speakers A LOT and so do I.

hey Glenn, one question. Would it be possible with a 4x12 box and 2 different speaker types to get the sound live like on the Clayman album. So for example V30 and a greenback or another. One speaker that is more high and hash tone, the another with more bass and fuller. Because you said there were 2 mics packed together. Is it possible to reproduce it in this way ?

Gleeeennnn, you playing the JP "Gotta Another Thing Coming" riff and me stuck at a red light has tempted me to put one foot on the brake, one on the gas, and do doughnuts in front of a cop! 😂 (And I do have a BMW I can do it in).

I think the closed-back might have something to do with the 'not the usual combo' sound. I have a Boogie Mk IV combo that sounds really good as a combo, but sounds amazing through a closed-back cabinet, even a 1x12. Much tighter low-end.
