Playing with Zangief it was very difficult when Vega climbs up.. he is too slow for getting away from the spanish grabbing zone. Against Sagat in this game is very difficult because both tiger magic hit the russian even being in crouch position.

Don't get it twisted, I absolutely loved SF2 when it first dropped and still do now, but what he said was typical of alot of people who tend to get overexcited and overrate one particular game, especially if they came from that generation, because surely their horizons were far broader than just SF2. Grappler characters can be real powerhouses, when used right. Just see what's going on in fighting game tournaments, inorder to get an idea, how powerful grapplers, can be.
I remember on the SNES there was this cheat but cant remember if it was for this or SF2 Turbo. But just before the CAPCOM image at the beginning of loading the game you would press something like: Up, Down, Left, right, Y,B,X,A and then it would make that CAPCOM sound again.

You have to give it to Capcom for rejuvenating the arcades for the 90s as it was declining in the late 80s and for popularizing the fighting genre that SNK Midway would follow.
Zangief is a badass. Once you're master him, Zangief is a quite powerful character. It took me some time back then to execute the spinning piledriver with ease and still struggle with that move sometimes, I think it's the most difficult special move in SF to do... for me
