But the whole change over is unnoticable - superb engineering from Honda. I dont notice any lag when placing foot on the throttle. It just goes! In sports mode the car dumps the battery power to the motor much faster for that super fast pickup. If anyone is on the fence for this Civic- dont be. Excellent fuel economy and the best I've got out of a tank is 896.1km on 38.32L, with 2 longer trips at an average of 90km/h due to speed limits. The trip was mostly flat with the odd steep incline and decline. Still catches me out when I boot it in sports mode and leaves me with a smile on my face. I just bought one and that's the thing that really surprised me I did not expect it to feel as fast as it does, I reckon Honda are fibbing about the performance it feels faster than 8 seconds to 100kph.
Regenerative braking level is saved in sports mode and indicated on the dashboard. It's being reset in normal end eco modes as it's pretty strong contrary to what the tester says and could destabilize the car for an unprepared driver while manouvering on icy road
From Honda UK: So in Normal or Econ modes, the brake regen will reset to normal when you press on the accelerator. This is to enable more efficient coasting which maximises mpg. In Sport mode, the regen mode doesn’t reset so if you set it to maximum, it will stay there. This is to maximise the energy recovery as to ensure the batteries have as much charge as possible, for a sportier drive.
Thank you, glad you liked it! Indeed, it's not expensive over PHEV alternatives, but rather when compared to pure petrol or diesel vehicles, buyers might be put off by the higher price tag. If it (and rivals) were cheaper, it would be a no-brainer for a lot of individuals.

@@TotallyEV a review of the civic somewhere on RUclips, from a few months ago, probably just after the hybrid introduction. Can't recall the specific one since I watched a lot of them because it is high on my wish list.

Your thoughts on the Camry-Civic comparison would be most helpful. Thank you.
The point of the regen brakes auto resting is you don't kill your gas mileage, you really are supposed to treat it like downshifting when you're slowing down and stopping. It's the same system from the last gen Insight and can add an additional 10mpg if done properly.
A very interesting review. I have ordered the Sport version in blue, which I will get in January. I think that this new Civic has got a lot going for it.
Android can be used wirelessly, it might be flakey with your handset but it's there can be activated from the "self-diagnose" menu by pressing a three button combo. RUclips search it and you should find the video.

@@TotallyEV In the manual which is available on the Honda website. Unless i miss read it this is the quote. " If you pull back the paddle selector, the rate of deceleration will change and the stage along with M will appear in the gauge. The deceleration stage will not cancel automatically while SPORT mode is ON. When you want to cancel the deceleration paddle selector, turn the SPORT mode OFF, or pull the (+ selector (right side) for a few seconds. When cancelled, deceleration stage in the gauge disappears".
Interesting, can't recall it working that way, nor why it would operate that way in Sport mode vs the other modes - guess we'll need to see if an owner of the vehicle experiences it or not, as our press vehicle has now gone back to Honda!
@TotallyEV in sports mode it saves the regen setting. I own one. I also find the regen quite strong....it has 5 settings and comfortably allows for one pedal driving at urban speeds. As for "kickdown"......it has no gearbox so that's a misleading term. The throttle map does change between modes.....in sport the response is absolutely instant, like a typical ev. If you don't need that torque you can select eco or normal mode for a more sedate drive. Also there is Android auto wireless....the settings are available with a quick search on RUclips.
@@andrewfinkelsteintennis1915 it's certainly nowhere near one-pedal driving, but thanks for sharing about Sports mode - will ask Honda UK to see why it behaves that way in said mode only. As for the kick-down - it's a good term to explain the shift in power, and one that people will understand. Indeed there's no gearbox. And as for Android Auto, it certainly wasn't available, of course, if you go via third-party solutions, that's not keeping in with what the vehicle itself supports.
Great video - clear and well filmed. Thanks. What would you say could be a PHEV alternative to this vehicle? I don't think there is much around in this class. PHEV's tend to be bigger and add a £5000 premium at least..
Thank you, glad you liked the video! Alternatives are in the description, its main PHEV alternative coming from the Volkswagen Group, with the Octavia and Passat.
So...if you are at town speeds in full ev mode, and you press the accelerator quickly to pass, do you get the full 315nm of torque? Does the petrol engine kick in or not, in that instance? Or do you only get use of the full 315nm at highway speeds?
It'll kick in if it senses more power is required than can be provided in full EV mode, but note you don't have control as to when you're in EV mode or not.
You mentioned that the regenerative braking doesn’t hold its setting. It does if your in Sport mode, but not Normal or Eco. Had mine since October and really like it.
German auto club ADAC measured the cabin noise at 70 dB at 130 km/h... usually cars in that class are around 68 dB (VWGolf, Seat Leon, Ford Focus ...)...poor result for the Honda. Like cars 20 years ago.
It's incredible how much this car has risen in price since this video was shot (£33,000) this model now with metallic paint is £41,000 crazy my advice is to get a "used" one I bought one with 360 miles on the clock for £5000 under list price.

I would recommend the Corolla, in my opinion the styling is far better, drives just as well if not better and is much more simplistic meaning reliable.
I'd say the Corolla hatch drives almost as well as the base Civic. The Corolla sedan doesn't drive near as well. Never driven a GR Corolla, but I'd suspect it's on par with a Civic SI, but faster. The Civic is available with a regular non-hybrid 2.0L N/A engine as well, so the Corolla isn't simpler. The Corolla is probably slightly more reliable, but we're talking about the difference between best and second best, probably shouldn't be the deciding factor for most people.

Honda probably expects it not to work very well on cheaper or older phones that don't support Bluetooth 5.2 and don't want to get bad press for it.
@@rightwingsafetysquad9872 Good point. My phone is Bluetooth 5.0
Wireless AA relies on WiFi, not Bluetooth. Any newer version of Bluetooth is also almost always backwards compatible.
From what i understand it saves the regen setting in sports mode.
We didn't notice it being stored, where did you gather this info from?
@@TotallyEV In the manual which is available on the Honda website. Unless i miss read it this is the quote. " If you pull back the paddle selector, the rate of deceleration will change and the
stage along with M will appear in the gauge. The deceleration stage will not cancel
automatically while SPORT mode is ON.
When you want to cancel the deceleration paddle selector, turn the SPORT mode
OFF, or pull the (+ selector (right side) for a few seconds. When cancelled,
deceleration stage in the gauge disappears".
Prius Prime is an option, though you're probably not getting around that plug-in price premium.

Do they have the same comfort, handling, performance and overall driving dynamics with the civic sedan?
So...if you are at town speeds in full ev mode, and you press the accelerator quickly to pass, do you get the full 315nm of torque? Does the petrol engine kick in or not, in that instance? Or do you only get use of the full 315nm at highway speeds?
It'll kick in if it senses more power is required than can be provided in full EV mode, but note you don't have control as to when you're in EV mode or not.
You mentioned that the regenerative braking doesn’t hold its setting. It does if your in Sport mode, but not Normal or Eco. Had mine since October and really like it.
Indeed, we've now received info from Honda on this. Interesting behaviour!
How’s the ride comfort over bad roads?
Great review 👍👍
Glad you liked it!
German auto club ADAC measured the cabin noise at 70 dB at 130 km/h... usually cars in that class are around 68 dB (VWGolf, Seat Leon, Ford Focus ...)...poor result for the Honda. Like cars 20 years ago.
We've conducted our own tests: totallyev.net/honda-civic-audio-review-upgrade-to-the-bose-system/
EXCELLENT REVIEW LOTS OF USEFUL INFORMATION & VERY WELL PRESENTED
Thank you, glad you liked it!
Where’s the golf course it’s missing from 😒
It's incredible how much this car has risen in price since this video was shot (£33,000) this model now with metallic paint is £41,000 crazy my advice is to get a "used" one I bought one with 360 miles on the clock for £5000 under list price.
Wow! The Honda e also had a ridiculous price rise, from around £27k up to £37k!
@@TotallyEV They must be having trouble selling them (Civic) at that price as well, there are a lot of ex-demo and low-mileage ones for sale at the moment for a big drop on the list price.
Potentially, but it's a popular vehicle!
What a car❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I wish we had the Civic hybrid in North America (Canada, specifically).
I wish we had the petrol only models in Europe. Maybe we can trade.
@@s4nder86 Deal. Let's do this.
Braking level of regenerative braking will not reset in sport and individual mode
So we've understood from Civic owners, but we've reached out to Honda for clarification
@@TotallyEV It is in manual... :D
Similar to the BYD system. Much better than Toyota's hybrid system.
Is this better hev then the Toyota ones?😊
How did you get a 2022 hybrid? They don't come out until the end of 2023 here in the U.S.,
We're in the UK. It would seem they're not in the US at this moment in time!
Android auto can be configured to connect wirelessly as well .
Unofficially, thus it's not supported for the masses.
@@TotallyEV just go in the settings and activate it.
Where is this car available? I don't think I've ever seen one here in the United States yet.
We understand it's not in the USA yet
Hello, would you choose a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y over this Civic Hybrid purely on driving enjoyment? And out of the Model 3 and Model Y which one do you prefer more? Thanks.
In terms of driving dynamics only, the Honda would be the better pick.
Between the Model 3 vs Y, the Model 3 is more engaging to drive.
Hope that helps?
@@TotallyEV Thank you, that was very helpful and also pleasantly surprised to know that the Civic Hybrid is the pick of the bunch considering just how quick the Teslas are.
@@TotallyEV someone else in the comments asked a similar question to mine and your response then was "the Tesla would be our recommendation. Will be cheaper to run and offer an exhilarating driving experience when you put your foot down!" 🤔
When it comes to handling, absolutely. The Teslas of course will be better in straight in speed!
Whats the difference between Honda and toyota hybrid systems. Which one is superior? In USA they have a new prius with even more power than this civic.
We've not tried Toyota's recent models so we can't comment.
I really hope one day in the future Honda makes an all-electric Civic!
Would be interesting to see!
God forbid! This is the best compromise for SO many people!
@@alanplayfordexactly. People need to get real on all of this and what can be done in sensible timeframes. Keep as many cars as possible as hybrids is the way forward in the real world.
I would recommend the Corolla, in my opinion the styling is far better, drives just as well if not better and is much more simplistic meaning reliable.
Can't think of the Corolla having better driving dynamics than this!
Hmmm, Honda have always been the name for reliability? Once I had an Accord, then a Civic - and have stuck with them ever since. bsolutely no Honda Civic problems at all, just the usual battery fails etc.
What do you mean by 'usual' battery fails ?
Trying to decide between Civic hybrid Advance vs Tesla model 3. Test driven both and both have their own advantages. Im based in Ireland. Any help is appreciated.
Guess it would all come down to if you can make the Tesla work for your lifestyle (ie charging infrastructure and/or home charging, plus distance you usually cover).
@@TotallyEV id usually do short trips. Have access to charging infrastructure. What to do in this case. Im sooooo split between the two. Can u help which one has a longer life and resale value?
Not sure about longevity of either, but given what you've mentioned - the Tesla would be our recommendation. Will be cheaper to run and offer an exhilarating driving experience when you put your foot down!
It's a very cool car with great design.
Thanks for sharing!
Can't get one, ordered 7th of Feb cancelled by dealer 28th of Feb looking at March 2024 before I can order one NAHHH. Toyota C-HR GR sport it is then, any chance of a JBL 576 watt 9 speaker review, please
Wow that's a long lead time, sorry to hear that!
As for an audio review of the Toyota, it's highly unlikely that'll happen - sorry!
@@TotallyEV Thx for the reply, that's not a lead time that's a try again in 2024
Top car by all reports but at $55,000 here in Australia Honda are pricing themselves out of the market.
That's a shame!
But still far cheaper than a restrictive all EV?!
I get about 420 miles per tank on my 2016 10th Gen Civic Touring, so I don’t see the advantage to going to a Hybrid version… Am I missing something??
Are you referring to the total range you can do in one single journey?
@@TotallyEV No, I get about 420 miles of range in mixed driving over multiple trips in my local metro area. If I go all highway and on a single trip I can stretch it out to about 440 miles.
But that's also down to the fuel tank capacity, which is likely reduced in the hybrid vs a pure ICE model
@@TotallyEV Mine holds 12.39 US Gallons…. What about yours?
@@billjohnsonseattle for this hybrid that will be 10.5 US gallon
Which one to choose in advance: Blue or Red or Black?
That's very subjective!
Black is generic and boring. Red attracts the police. I'd go with blue.
From which entetprise is the trunk mat?
No idea, sorry!
Does it come with a spare tire?
Nope!
When will the US get this?
I was told by the end of this month or early next month July/August 2024
Top of my ' Next Car ' List, but most certainly a used 2022 one given the price of a new one now takes it into the UK's Luxury car tax brand. That will mean a yearly tax invoice of over £500 per year.......... for 5 years !! That is just a total rip off, not a chance. Good review though, not wanting a full EV so this fits the bill.
Thanks for sharing and glad you enjoyed the review!
Does it really make yeet sound?
Yeet!
What about the R model?
It's not a hybrid, different class of vehicle!
Why does Honda give all the cool trim models to other countries including a panoramic sun roof!
Ha, which country are you in?

Only problem is the warranty 3 years instead of 5 with Toyota and 8 years on the battery or up to 90k miles, Toyota 15 years! And the service charges are higher than Toyota.
