I'm so glad you're listening to Billy. His music grabbed me as a kid. His lyrics are among the best of any artist, and his drummer (Liberty DeVitto) has always been one of my favorites. He has a wealth of great stuff to explore.
It comes from such a personal place. He left New York because of a number of crappy things that were happening to him, landed in LA almost without a choice, had to play piano in a dumpy, depressing bar under an assumed name just to get by and, understandably, he absolutely hated it. And he took those feelings and put them into a sentimental Ronnie Spector tribute that has that wistfulness and even a little anger - it really comes out in live versions - about everything that led up to that point. And then that winds into Summer Highland Falls and New York State of Mind on Turnstiles, which gloriously and sentimentally celebrate his love for home. It's interesting to me how Billy Joel has actually said he's a Taylor Swift fan. Both write songs that are very personal. Thing is, it feels like Joel's songs are more about real struggle - people who have truly wronged him, not feeling good enough, other people like Vietnam vets and struggling fishermen, and so on. Learn Joel's story and you understand just how hard he had to work to get the respect that critics might have only given him well after he stopped writing pop music, if at all. Meanwhile, Swift's songs feel more like overblown popular girl problems - oh no, 200 boys like me but the cute one I like doesn't like me back (and maybe it's because he's weirded out by me staring at him all the time and writing songs about him). Humorous comments about Swift aside, in Joel's songs, you can feel the real pain and depression and it feels more like real struggle. I've always thought this song was the best example of that. That's why it's my favorite Joel song when I look at it from his perspective. I have Joel songs that are more personal to me and, pun unintended but still noted, my life, LOL. But this one feels like it was his biggest reminder of what "low" really felt like.

An easy song to relate to. In the early 1980's I spent some time on the West Coast, it was fun, but it was never home. Moved back east and never looked back.

There are very few albums where you can say without exaggeration that they don't have a weak moment on them. This is one of them.
The Stranger too
I disagree; this album is not without it's stinkers. His only flawless album is River of Dreams.
This song is awesome on “Songs In The Attic”.
I never liked "James". Besides that, every song on "Turnstiles" to "52nd Street" is near perfect.
