Thank you so much for this video! Tracy Nelson was the daughter of singer Ricky Nelson. Jamie always played preppie girls to the hilt! It got canceled because of frequent use of drugs on set. Creator Anne Beatts went on to produce one season each of Cosby and A Different World. Well done ENC!
Yes, Johnny Slash (Merritt Butrick) always did seem older than the others. But doesn't every high school have an eccentric, older kid who has an unspoken backstory that no one seems to know?
Square Pegs was an amazing show, even though it was way before my time. It certainly helped pave the way for Parker Lewis Can't Lose, My So-Called Life, Freaks and Geeks, Glee, and other great shows about high school misfits that followed. It was responsible for introducing us to the future Mrs. Matthew Broderick (aka Ferris Bueller) herself, Sarah Jessica Parker, in one of her first starring roles, way before Hocus Pocus and S3x and the City, among other things, and it was created by the late, great Anne Beatts, who was one of SNL's original writers during its founding years. Groundbreaking for its realistic depiction of teenage life mixed with clever writing and offbeat humor, Square Pegs deserved so much more than the one season that it only got. I guess audiences in 1982 weren't even ready for that kind of show like Square Pegs, but thank goodness times have changed. Good job, Ean! 😉 Anyway, I have a personally fun request for you. Can I please suggest you do a "5 Things You Didn't Know" video on the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series in the near future?
Tracy Nelson is the daughter of Ricky Nelson, super famous pop singer of the late 50's, early 60's, and beyond. Ricky Nelson was one of the two sons of Ozzie Nelson, one of the pioneers in TV sitcom history with the show he did with his wife Harriet Nelson and their two sons Ricky and David. Tracy's mother was Kristin Harmon, daughter of University of Michigan football legend Tom Harmon and his movie star wife Elyse Knox. So.... famous family all around!
@@richardranke3158 You couldn't tell by just looking at her face...uncanny resemblance, plus she was that nun with Tom Bosley in the Father Dowling Mysteries after Pegs.
I see Square Pegs, I hit the subscribe button. I also read the set of the show was pretty crazy with underage drinking and drugs. Looking forward to a more in depth episode.
I haven't watched Square Pegs in years but I did enjoy it. Another one season and done teenage show I loved was My So Called Life. Perfectly captured the early 90s. Then if we want to time travel to the 2000s Freaks and Geeks I loved too and another one and done. It's crazy because in the 80s I was a little kid. The 90s were my teenage years and the 2000s I was in college turning 21 etc but they all really captured the insecurities of being a teenager set in a backdrop of their eras.
Both really good picks. Interesting all three shows have basically the same thing and all only had one season. Makes me wonder why those shows cant make it pass season one.
I'm so glad that Square Pegs has been immortalised on DVD and on streaming channels. Too bad some of the music used originally had to be replaced, probably due to copyright. As to Merritt being too old for the part, I think it was mentioned in one of the episodes that he was a repeat student? I don't remember which one. If you watched the movie Clueless, you'd notice how some of the students looked even older than kids were supposed to look at that age. Speaking of fake hair, didn't it appear that Mr Donovan was wearing a wig too?
@@retrocereal, I grew up in Los Angeles, living near the Beverly Hills area--yep, I was that weird little Black girl who thought she was a Valley Girl--LOL!!! By the way, maybe you can review the Valley Girl movie--it may be more of a girl thing though!

So the casting director destroys a perfectly good pair of Ray Bans just to hit Miss Parker with the Clark Kent approach!?! Ya see, this was what I was referring to when I was saying how vapid & superficial this period was!

Indeed!
Merritt Butrick was 🔥!
RIP 😢
I think LaDonna was older too
A way better than Saved by the Bell. A good cartoon short to run before Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
For sure better than SBTB!
I used to watch Square Pegs and really liked it. I was a teenager myself, at the time, and that probably helped. Lol.
It was a great show. Thanks for commenting!

Nelson is a common enough last name, so I had no idea what family Tracy Nelson came from until I saw her interviewed on a talk show.

Who the hell is Harry Nelson? You're doing a retro show and don't even know who RICKY Nelson is?
Ya he isn't very good at this.

I appreciate the wonderful video. We need to work on these names!
Loved the show since it debuted my freshman year of high school. I was so upset when they didn’t renew it.🤭
Yeah! A lot of people were disappointed.
Jamie Gertz now worth $8B !!!.
