The first hoax (well, scam) I fell for was when I was on Netscape at school during a rare computer lab visit in the '90s. This may have been my first time online, but at least one of my first. I got one of those old scam banner ads: "Punch the monkey and win $10!" I clicked right on its face and a page I didn't understand came up. I got my teacher for help since I wanted my $10. She closed the page and explained that it was a lie. I felt embarrassed but never trusted a banner ad again, and there were scam banner ads for a long time to come. Only other time I clicked one was when they started making them look like windows with a fake X. Got me once or twice. I also remember chain emails saying something good would happen if I sent it to enough people and/or something bad would happen if I didn't. Even as a kid I didn't fall for those. Apparently that still goes on today, only being transmitted by social media now.
Wow! I'd never heard of this, but I was probably a bit young for it when it happened. But it's super cool to hear you describe it. Keep up the awesome internet archeology, my guy! And we subbed!
Why should I "like" a video or "subscribe" to the channel, when I haven't watched the video yet? It would be more appropriate to put that crap at the end of the video.
Hmm, it's a small channel, and this was fairly interesting. You commented 4 times being kind of negative. Please be kind. It looks like your account intends on making videos at some point. Don't you want people to be nice and supportive to you if you do start making content? There's nothing to gain from being unkind. Please? Have a really nice day, okay?
I like how the first Alternate Reality Game to really go viral was actually about alternate realities. It's fitting!
LOL!
I've been on the internet since the mid 1990s and never heard of this story. I was on bulletin board systems from 1982.
Interesting. I think even back then the inter net was a very big place.
Nostalgia only works for things people remember and know about. This was a big nothing. The Nigerian prince ranks way higher.
Yes!

"Zins"? Don't you mean "zines", pronounced "zeens" as in short for magazines produced by individuals? "Phrack" was one of these.
Probably
Interesting
Thanks!
