With the 2024 reboot of You Bet just around the corner (albeit only 2 episodes), I thought this would be a great game show to take a look back at. What are your memories of this show? Any favourite challenges? Let us know in the comments below. Enjoy everyone - hard at work on the next video now 😁
I often mention this show to people and they can rarely remember it. Was a big part of my youth, and always used to enjoy the re-runs shown on Challenge. Great little documentary, thanks for the effort you put into these.
I still revisit the, "you bet" uploads on RUclips every now and then. I loved that show as a kid. I'd watch it at my grandparents on a Saturday evening. Such a great show.
Same here. Saturday nights. Grandparents house. It didn't get better than that. Me and Grandma wpuld watch some Saturday night telly, whether it was this, or Gladiators, or Stars in ther Eyes, and then we'd watch a Biblical Epic, or Star Wars, or a Catherine Cookson.
I remember the Brucey You Bet Rap he did at the end of each episode. Do you wanna bet on it? You bet! Well you’d betta get on it? You bet! So don’t fret, get set are you ready? You bet! Classic Forsyth.
Excellent video - thanks so much for this. My childhood memories flooding back. I can’t believe the footballer missed that open goal after all his excellent skill in the build up!
@@officialbackintheday Fantastic! Loved Big Break. Jim Davidson was great, and the trick shot guy who's name escapes me was ace. Do Stars in the Eyes too please!
This has got me feeling super nostalgic about watching Saturday night tv with my mum and dad when I was a kid, I miss those days so much. Kids today will never experience the whole family together taking part in these great shows.
And this is exactly why I make videos for this channel, to make people feel that nostalgia, that longing for the past when life was simpler and times were good. Thanks for checking out the channel mate, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Wow - Thank you for giving 'Wetten, dass...?' and the hosts Elstner/Gottschalk so much credit! I didn't know the show had international copies. Normally it's the German TV that copies US and UK shows. 'Wetten, dass..?' was THE show to watch growing up in the 80s and 90s. It was such a huge thing when absolute top of the tops world stars like Michael Jackson, Madonna or Take That visited the show. Since the show was produced by German, Austrian and Swiss national TV stations, the show was shown in all 3 countries simultaneously. Imagine having like 6 channels and 3 show the same show. But that's how it was and it was great.
Remember You Bet growing up and was a Saturday night staple for the family....Remember Matthew Kelly, Bruce Forsyth and Darren Day presenting it over the years and am so pleased it's back soon even if it's only for two episodes...Great video and insight into a British Saturday night favourite...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@officialbackintheday absolutely spot on...Sat nite viewing now is almost embarrassing tbh...Gone are the days of shows like You Bet where all the families watching would get involved from their living rooms trying to guess who'd complete their challenges and whi wouldn't!!!...Sat night used to be a family TV 📺 night when I was growing up (Born in 1979) in the 80's and nineties but now it's non existent almost...Kudos to u on you're content my friend 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks a lot! My hope with this channel is to help people relive those amazing times when you and your family would all gather around the TV to watch an amazing show together. Thanks so much for watching :)
On the Matthew Kelly bandwagon, stars in their eyes would also make a great retrospective. Just want to say how much i enjoy your videos, very well researched and such a nostalgia trip for a guy in my late 30's!
You bet was definitely my favourite Saturday night show along with Noels hous party when i was growing up, great time for tv in that era nothing compares these days.
Loved this nostalgia trip.. having been a contestant in Series 9 myself! Thank you for a great retrospective, and here's hoping the small reboot is successful!
Childhood favourite, this one. :) A couple of standout challenges :- A Frisbee challenge that was deliberately sabotaged by the production crew. So they could stitch up an arachnophobic Pat Sharp with a Tarantula based forfeit. A helicopter based challenge that featured "Mikey" from Interceptor. Along with the chopper from that show with the running man logos covered up. An Army Drill Team that tried to complete a blinfolded routine while being judged by a Navy Drill Officer. The Army failed the challenge, with a wry grin from the Navy Officer and a grimace from the Army Sargeant. You just knew those poor sods got beasted to hell and back when they returned to barracks!
@@Sn0wc4t There's a couple of times the producers tinkered with things. The one that most comes to mind was a BMX half pipe challenge. He was breezing through it so they asked him to make it look a bit harder. Stop and take a couple of breaks. Have a drink. Just don't make the last challenge of the series look too easy.
I really enjoyed this show as a kid. Matthew Kelly was so fun. You should do Stars in Their Eyes next! Saturday nights just arent the same any more. Thank you so much for bringing the memories back.
an iconic challenge i remember fondly was a firebreather who had to use his firebreathing to burst 200 balloons in 2:00. hopefully the renewed series would be great to have back.
This period of Saturday night tv was a golden era for me. I was 10 in 1992 and still remember You Bet. It was the days before Sky/Cable and there seemd to be something refreshing about having only 4 channels to choose from. Saying that, shows like You Bet would last 2 episodes nowdays
Great documentary - I could hear your passion coming through. I forgot how fun You Bet was, I was possibly a little too young to truly appreciate it for most of its run, but I always enjoyed Matthew Kelly's warmth and good-natured humour. He's a great presenter.
another thing I liked was that the music at the end of the challenge was different depending on if they where successful or not. If they passed it would play as normal. If they failed the last note would be out of tune. It was a nice touch
Our rival horse riding stable did one of the challenges in the Matthew Kelly era. The challenge was to identify X amount of horses by only looking at their feet (each horse was behind a partition that only showed the bottom 6 inches or so). Everyone at my local stable was incredibly scathing about it because a) we were kids and therefore more impressed by the more daring stuff on the show; and b) we felt it wasn't very impressive. If you work at a stable, you pick every horse's hooves daily, so yeah, you see a lot of feet and know who they belong to! Nonetheless, they did complete the challenge, and until I saw this video, I had completely forgotten about the whole thing! :)
I genuinely only remember Matthew Kelly hosting this, although the years Matthew was hosting was probably the era I was actually watching TV at the time as I was in college/Uni
Yea same for me. My memories of this show have always been the Matthew Kelly era and a bit of the Darren Day era. The Bruce Forsyth episodes are great though - definitely check them out!
Same here. I was looking through some old TV listings the other day from about 1989 and was surprised to see it mention You Bet presented by Bruce Forsyth. Not only didn't I not know it was originally presented by Bruce Forsyth but I didn't know it started in the late 80s, I only seem to remember it from about 94 onwards.
Dear God! I was the Eurovision contestant during an episode in 1992. It was a very long day of rehearsals before the actual show, with the production team using dummy questions. I kept mistiming my entry on to the stage. On the first rehearsal I was way too slow and I was still shuffling across the set well after the music had stopped, Matthew Kelly yelling "Hurry up!". Second time out, I bolted across the stage like an Olympic 100 metre runner - also wrong! Great fun though.
Wow that's amazing - thanks for commenting and hope you enjoyed the video! I wonder, do you still remember all of those songs and their placements in the song contest?
2:53 and 15:00 Dominic O'Brien gets everywhere and his was one of a few challenges done on both Wetten Dass and You Bet. Dominic was also on Noels House Party once for the Big Pork Pie segment where he admitted despite being a memory champion, he once forgot to pick up a friend from the airport. The dinner table truck over a ramp, and I'm assuming the candle flickering in front of a speaker, is another example of challenges being done on international versions.
Watched this the first time round mainly the Matthew Kelly era which to me is the best. My favourite challenges I remember were the ones where the pilots from treasure hunt used their helicopters. One was open champagne and pour a glass the other was the auto rotation into a designated zone
You can almost picture/hear Alan Partridge in the backdrop of this documentary. Right down to Meryl Streep bailing on her You Bet appearance (eerily reminiscent of Raquel Welch standing-up Partridge for Knowing Me, Knowing Yule).
Matthew Kelly is the man. I remember they were filming at Hooton Park in Cheshire for a challenge when we were 8 or 9 years old (early to mid 90's). Can't remember what it exactly entailed but they had a helicopter there (unsure if this was part of challenge or used for filming) but when they wrapped....we got a chance to have a short flight in it round the airfield!!!! Too much nostalgia watching this video 😍
I really liked You Bet! I must admit though that my timeline was off slightly as like you I regarded the Matthew Kelly era as the shows peak but I thought it finished a few years later than it did, I don't think I even watched the Darren Day version :/
I'd forgotten all about this! I spent most of the time these kinds of things were on watching sci-fi like the various Star Treks so a lot of these programmes passed me by. Can't say as I've seen any of the Brucey ones, but I do remember some of the Mathew Kelly episodes as I was a big fan of his back then, having grown up with him doing children's TV. I don't think I'd watch it now, especially if the back-stabber-in-chief is involved, I've lots more Tokusatsu to watch! It does go to show that these companies have run out of ideas if they're re-hashing old gameshows. Just a note on the lad who was paralysed on Wetten Dass?. The car that he failed to clear was actually driven by his dad, who was absolutely devastated, as you would be. Thankfully there was no bad blood. Saw that on one of Nick Crowley's darkest TV videos, well worth a watch!
I loved this show. Kelly was the best host... looking forward to reboot. I always thought mulhern would be a natural host for it but unsure about Holly... but pleased it's getting an airing....
Heres a fun fact here! actually ITV did bring you bet back as a new show called "wanna bet!" With Steven Mohan as a solo host. And it didn't stay on the ITV player for long! But did happen!
I was a huge fan of this show... It was a Saturday night highlight and far far better than the crap that's on TV now. Sadly, my enthusiasm of its return was dashed when l heard Holly Willoughby was co presenting and that it's only going to be 2 episodes. I'd happily re-watch all the classic episode reruns once a week as I've forgotten a lot of the outcomes to the challenges.
Is it me, or did the people doing the memory challenges nearly always pass on one part and come back to it to up the tension? And I never knew Bruce Forsyth hosted You Bet, always thought it was Kelly and Day.
You Bet! was basically the UK version of the German TV institution that was Wetten Dass?! minus the big name musical performances and the odd appearance of an international A or B lister. The difference was that You Bet! lasted an hour on ITV1’s Saturday night while Wetten Dass?! took up at least 3 hours of ZDF’s Saturday night schedule because WD?! also doubled up as a talk show too!
It's funny that everyone remembers Matthew Kelly as presenter when he only hosted 3 out of 8 series The creative challenges were really different and memorable. Decades before RUclips would allow ordinary people to showcase their unusual talents.
Saturday entertainment was just so much better back then, noel's house party being my favourite. What have we got now, strictly come dancing, gawd, I'd rather watch paint dry!
I don't really know too much about the more recent Big Brothers but I watched the first few series when they aired. There are definitely Big Brother-related videos on my list though!
I have to agree, I remember watching this on a Saturday evening at my grandparents house, and to me it was always Matthew Kelly who was the only presenter of it, i did not know of Brucey doing it or the other guy after. bring back the days of decent television, not the rubbish they have on these days, mind you back then people had longer attention spans and didnt have gadget in their hands and such like they do today.
