The only real problem with the lens is lack of availability, 8 months in and you still can’t find one anywhere.
It was difficult to even get this for review. I waited for months to get it
Yes. Ordered in December. According to my local camera store anticipated delivery (unless Canon gets their butts is gear) is currently July........2025! He said most store are getting one a month.
@@alansach8437 Damn that’s crazy. It took me a while to get it for review.
@@alansach8437 I only ordered this month from B&H so I’ll probably be waiting until 2026! I’m debating on canceling my order and ordering a refurbished 100-500 from the Canon Store for almost the same price, but will wait a few months and see if the supply improves.
Thanks to the globalists man made fake shortage
Good review - and I really liked your shots as well. This is my current no1 most wanted lens 😻
Thank you 🙏
Great video!
I got the R5 with Sigma 60-600mm, I love it!! (not always focus great..),
But more affordable and great aperture.
Thank you. Also a really good lens by Sigma
Very nice review. I have it for a half a year. I would just mention zoom ring-it takes you 3 or 4 turns to go from 200 to 800, and that can be frustrating, but still.. For 2k, it is amazing lens, 100% game changer, I forgot about all my other lenses :)
@@vas.milivoj thanks for watching. Yes it’s game changer for reach and price
I agree about the throw of the zoom ring. I strap to mine a lever that is designed for follow focus in cine photography so I can push the lever rather than grab the ring. It’s still not perfect but it’s an improvement.
Stunning photos, amazing lens with impressive features.
Thanks!
Nice review, I subscribed
Thanks!!🙏
I rented this lens for a week. IMPO, it is the Holy Grail for bird photography. Even aside from the price point. This lens would do more for me than a $16K RF 800 F5.6
It’s fantastic right!!
@@btonelli I'm seriously considering paying $2470 for one from overseas, just because it's in stock, and I can have it in a less than a week. I'll tell you what, if March of 25' rolled around, and I still didn't have it, I would absolutely spend $500 more on it, to make it happen. But still hoping I might get one for $1900 within a few weeks. I have some ideas ;) And again, for myself, I don't have to wonder how well it would work for me. I used it, and it was fantastic ! :)
Most Canon RF users, like myself, are debating whether to keep the RF 100-500 or move to this.....that is the question..
Depends if you need the reach really. I was quite impressed with the versatility of the lens. It’s big but outside of that, grabbing shots at 800mm was awesome
@@btonelli Indeed. For now I am just keeping the 100-500 and enjoying it. Good for Canon to have something at this price point when I do like to have 800mm reach....at least it's not going to hurt the wallet as much
@@dennisvun8863 agree 💯
I was saving for the 100-500, but coming from using a 100-400 I wasn’t excited to just get another 100mm. On a R7. I’ve been using the 200-800 for a few months now and it’s great. There is a lot of debate about the F9 or sharpness (especially on R7), but compared to other L lens I’ve used, this one can be fairly close - I don’t have any concern. 99% of my images have been between 500-800 so I’m very happy with this lens…and if I pair it to a FF, I still have 800. Only use case where this may not be great is for travel (carry on air travel) as it is large. I’ll continue to use my 100-400 for that.
Using this with R5 just good great pic focusing is quick amazing results and very easy for hand held .Very Happy. If you stabilize well works good in very low light also
Would love to try this with the R5 for higher resolution
Might be an option, IF there were an RF version, but have heard about severe focus problems with the EF versions on mirrorless cameras.
@@alansach8437 actually this is an RF lens
I use the Sigma 150-600 and thats awesome and that's 900USD I may invest in this also!!!!
Out of the big 3: Nikon 180-600mm, Sony 200-600mm and this Canon lens, for me Sony is the most desirable option. All these options are so close to each other you will get great results no matter what you choose, there are just a few little things I like about the Sony. It's the cheapest here in Australia, has the shortest zoom throw, nice manual focus placement and has the most consistent image quality, i'm not saying it's the sharpest, it's just consistent throughout the zoom range and is guaranteed to sharpen up when shooting at F8.
This Canon lens is still amazing though, from what I have seen it's really sharp at 600mm, then a little softer at 800mm but similar quality to the 200-600mm with a 1.4x converter, so you're basically getting a built in teleconverter and I shoot the Sony at 600mm F8 anyway so little to no compromise with the Canon.
Yes good assessment. It really comes down to the system you have and prefer. All great options
Nikon 180-600 plus 1.4tc costs as much, without the tc its internal zoom which is better weather sealed
Also a good lens but this is a 200-800 no tc. Impressive
Agree...much prefer the internal zoom of the Nikon. As well, the throw to go from 180 to 600 is so easy and a big improvement over the F-mount 200-500. The Canon does go all the way to 800mm, but from the review it looks like it's a good 2 long twists to get there.
@@philcampbell5827 in use it’s a long throw but doesn’t impede the experience of getting the photo one would need unless we are caught off guard and really need to go to 800 or back to 200 as fast as possible
That's great if you have Nikon...
@@gourami7 of course, I stated that in regard to the description of the lens as an achievement in lens engineering
Is it readily available from stores in Singapore now? I mean display, walk in and buy.
Some stores have stock but not a lot.
Bobby l have the lens & love it but the tighten ring should be called the loose & looser ring as you don’t get lens creep but lens drop they needed a lock switch.
Yeah it’s not really the most ideal thing. I didn’t get lens creep but also wasn’t really tight
Waiting for 50-800mm lenses with 3-6.3 aperture.
It comes with a pickup truck to carry it 😂
Great advertisement for lifelong photographically-newbie birders like me!
Thanks for watching
Which class? The f9-lenses?
200-800. This type of reach for the price
Dude you been busy!
Haha you have no idea 😂😂 I have about four to five more videos in the backlog to come out.
Good range. Not going to lie. But slow.. even in bright day time for very fast shutter speed 1 may still need high iso. But if they make lens fast. It will be bigger and way more costly. So. This lens is only good in bright day time and people who ok with high iso all the times. Its a big compromise. That said. Nothing is perfect. The price and range is excellent tho.
Actually I was shooting in overcast and with shutter speeds at 1/1600 my ISO was around 1500 to 2000 at times. Maybe 3 to 4K in darker lighting.
All these photos were never shot in bright daylight
@@btonelli since you’re based in Singapore. Ever try or thought of trying these lenses in the night safari? How about 300GM. Would love to see it!
@@sgpork I’m waiting to get that for review. Wouldn’t mind actually to try that
You can’t remove the tripod foot huge bummer.
Does anyone use this lens for sports? I was wondering what ISO would be used at a shutter speed of around 1/1250 or 1/1600 at 800mm? In daylight of course 😂
For 1/1250 in slight overcast ISO was 4000
I didn’t photograph anything at 800 but at 481mm I was at f9 and ISO 1250. Still not bright sunlight. Images on both are clean
@@btonelli not bad at all. It might be good for daytime softball/baseball games. I use a sigma 120-300 f/2.8 on R5/R6 at 1.6x and that usually works but sometimes I need that additional reach for the furthest outfield catches. Thank you, great review and images!
@@3-piece129 Thanks for watching and glad the specs helped out
Iso is your camera, not the lens 😂 the lens only care and performs after the aperture and focal length.
@@bamsemh1 yes, everyone knows that. The shutter speed is also taken into account and since I have a similar camera, I was curious of the camera’s ISO response. What are you talking about?
The comments about this lens being expensive.... What do you expect ? How much do you want pay for a lens 100bucks?
For some that aren’t familiar with the prices of Super Telephoto lenses they think this is expensive. They are still learning about the camera market and pricing for such lenses.
This is not expensive - look at a 600mm prime - that's an expensive lens!
@@robineden5727 haha indeed
$1900 for this lens is a freaking bargain ! $2900 for the 100-500, that is not any faster than it is, and almost never long enough for my uses, is a rip off.
@@Chris_Wolfgram indeed
What a bargain!
Indeed especially for the price
You mean the $2,000 lens? Ya..
One thought, the lens is slow as my grandma crossing the street.
lol!!!!!!
Slower than your grandma
Slower
@@christophercarlimages9003 😭😭😭
Did you even listen to the video? You act like the only thing you use is in the pitch dark.
You cant review a zoomlens with a R3 thats not fair!! Use r7 then we have good info! Using R3 giving us false info!
Why does it give you false info? Why only R7?
@@btonelli r3 best canon camera! use cheap lens with r3 and have great image quality! so this review isnt fair! always use affordable camera if you make a review! nobody can buy r3 its way too expensive
$1900 is expensive😢
For a lens like this actually it’s quite affordable
2000$ is still expensive 🤦♂️
For the reach and the performance this is quite inexpensive considering
