Glaze Firing #9
12/11/23
Skutt 818 Kiln
Cone 5, Medium Speed
5 minute hold
2 hour preheat with top peep open
12.04 firing time
Lots of glaze companies represented in this firing: Amaco, Mayco, Laguna, Spectrum, & Georgies
PLUS
some independent small batch glaze companies, Midnight, Ritual and Wizard, the last 2 make special effects glazes and are located nearby to me in Portland, Oregon (as is Georgies).
I have been looking forward to using these special effects glazes (gloop, bead, crawl, puff, and oilspot) and these are just the smallest tests, so many more to come!
The Rainbow Mug with Light Flux has 6 colors of Mayco Stroke&Coat:
SC74 Hot Tamale
SC97 Cant-elope
SC24 Dandelion
SC7 Leapin Lizard
SC29 Bluegrass
SC33 Fruit of the Vine

You've done such a nice job of explaining the glazes/technique. I learn every time I view your channel. Thanks for sharing.
You are very good with the galzes.
Wow! Lots of super cool stuff in this load! My favorite is the octagon shaped cup with that special effect glaze around the bottom part. Very unique! Thanks for sharing and best wishes for you & new baby on the way!
Thanks! that one took a lot of decisions but i think it turned out great too, one of my favorites...
Amanda awesome kiln opening! So many ideas I want to try 😊. That rainbow mug near the end……just wow! Thanks for the shout out. Happy holidays!
Thanks Lisa! Happy Holidays!
Nice kiln load Amanda! I'm a puple/green fan too so your purple gloss/aurora green is always a fav of mine. I have yet to go on Instagram because I know I will be ordering more glazes lol. Thanks for the idea of a business card holder with crystals.......💜💚💜
Forgot to mention it was purple gloss with some white gloss mixed together, it makes it a brighter purple i think ! 💜
Hey Amanda! For the past 2 weeks Ive been looking to see if you've posted another kiln opening and here you are. You always have such interesting glaze combos and items. Now......off to watch! 😁
Hope you enjoyed it! Lots of different stuff in here!
Your glazes are stunning! 😍🥰
Thank you so much!
Beautiful glazes. Hope you are not as it of breath as you sound, if so maybe time to see a doc. Loved the card holder. Such delicate work.
Congratulations on little babe on way!
Thank you!!!
I was wondering where you were! Congrats!
Just here making verrrry slowly! Being pregnant and having a 6 year old makes it even harder than the first time around! Super excited for a new baby though!❤
Great Kiln opening, Amanda! There are so many wonderful things in this kiln opening that I can't even mention them all! I very recently did my first blog post on using the slow cool program. Now I am thinking, that I should do a video of programming my Scott 1018. What kind of Kiln do you have? Congratulations on your pregnancy! When you're sick it doesn't always feel like it's a great thing, but it's pretty awesome!
Thanks Audrey! I have a Skutt 818, i have always wanted to program it but there are so many choices! I still haven't decided if the cone 5 or 6 program is right for me either, or if the slow cool program would be the most ideal but i think you making a video about it would be super helpful!
OMG GIRL I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YOUR NEXT KILN LOAD!! Congratulations. Sorry you’re having a hard time though. Looks like I won’t be doing anything g the next 48 minutes. Hahaha. I have an index card for each piece that I write everything on. I number them as well as a tiny corresponding number on the bottom of the pot.
Ohhh a number on the bottom, thats a good idea, with underglaze pencil or something? Initially i write the combos on a tiny piece of paper and put itin the mug, then when i load it i write them all on a list in my kiln notebook. They are always such different forms that its easy so far to remember which is which. Hope you enjoyed the combos i am going to try and do another firing before Christmas too!!!
I didn’t get to finish watching. I’m going to now. I do use an underglaze pencil but I found out recently that crayola brand brown crayons or colored pencils stay through the cone 6 and even cone 7 glaze firing!! Sooo much cheaper than the dang ug pencils!! That gloop is so cool!! Omg how funny!! I was filming a kiln opening yesterday and my phone ran out of memory as well. I tried deleting some pictures but I just have waaay too many on there.
Hope you enjoyed it! Thats interesting about the pencils too. I got an amaco black one but yeah it was like $20. Hopefully it will last a really long time, so far i have only sharpened it once✏️
@@RedEftDesignsI was finally able to finish watching today! 3 days to watch a video. Lol I loved this kiln load and your combos. Cant wait to see how the glaze combos will be on non flat pieces!! The rainbow mug and the diamond shape cup are so awesome!! I so love watching your videos since we do such similiar work. I need to broaden my glazes. I only have mayco and amaco and spectrums pearl white and power turquoise. I have several gallons of Laguna glazes but I got them from someone who had them for a few years and I’ve mixed them and tried to get them to the right consistency but none of them will come out right. I Need to call the company. Love the pipe at the end too. Also loving those ritual glazes. How fun!! Ok last comment lol but I’d love to know how you attach your crystals to the pieces. I wait until the clay is pretty stiff to be able to cut them well but then they are too hard to apply to anything. Sorry for the book form comments! My favorite, I think, is the rainbow mug and the whale!!!
