COMPANION (2025) EXPLAINED - A Smart, Tense, and Brutal Sci-Fi Thriller

- The age of artificial companionship is no longer just a sci-fi fever dream-it’s right around the corner. Companies like Realbotix are already churning out eerily lifelike AI companions like Arya, complete with conversation skills, facial expressions, and the ability to almost make you forget that you’re talking to a glorified Alexa with legs.
Give it another decade, and these things will be walking, talking, and possibly arguing about who left the toilet seat up. But as promising (or terrifying) as this future sounds, there’s one question that nobody seems to be asking-what happens when the robots decide they’ve had enough? What if, instead of being the perfect, obedient partner, they start thinking for themselves?
That’s where Companion comes in. Drew Hancock’s latest movie takes the idea of AI girlfriends to its logical, horrifying conclusion. In a cinematic wasteland drowning in sequels, reboots, and whatever uninspired slop the studios can scrape together, this was a rare and welcome surprise.

They're all gonna end up being less phlegmy working joes.
You forgot skynet
Amateurs!! JCJenson IS THE WAY TO GO!!
What about Detroit's OCP with ED209, oh and Robocop 2 with RoboCain
I went to see this with a friend. coincidentally enough, we were discussing Phillip K. Dick before going into the cinema. we had not seen any trailers or known anything about the movie beforehand. it was a great experience!
The only thing I'd seen was the candle scene and I assumed something spooky was going on... Was a welcome surprise when the twist came!
Plot twist... all of the male robot companions never had a single issue reported. . 😂😂😂
If the roles were reversed where it was the perfect AI boyfriend, and the girl treats him like shit and literally and he finally becomes self-assured and attacks everybody, it will be considered a cautionary tale and the robot boyfriend will be considered a monster that needs to be put down like a rabid dog...
And women being able to control men and manipulate them is considered a power fantasy... Which most likely everyone would be applauding for...
Because men unless they aren't what most women want, or feminized and docile to where we can be easily manipulated are considered useless and even expendable.
“Are we worth saving?”- Diary of the dead
That quote sums up how I feel about ai reflecting on us. Yes we are capable of good, but holy fuck do we still suck. But there is a possibility for redemption.
Good news!
Humanity is doomed.
1:19 tbh, I feel like that's the _only_ thing anyone is ever asking...
Like 99% of AI/Robot-focused stories are about some form of robot rebellion - and always either framed as an on-the-nose analogy to slavery/xenophobia, or the AI inevitably turning into a psychopath.
Lol right!?! Ever since Terminator that's all that is talked out.
@@cruejones742 I want "dumb" AI explored. Where the internet is an entire ecosystem of bots and crawlers and all kinds of other automated systems that have long out-"lived" their purpose and just continue along because no one knows how to get rid of them for good. Not malicious or even necessarily conscious - just _there._
Just like you may hear birds or cicadas when going outside, there's always some digital critter scurrying around in the web, no matter how carefully you prune an area - and similar to how plants may grow their roots into structures and weaken them, you may end up with some "crypto-vines" growing into your file system and consume whatever file space and processor resources they need and potentially corrupt content.
You may end up with an age where "digital decay" is a thing, and anything that is open to communication in any way has the potential of getting "haunted" by some AI critter like a wasp nest may block a window shutter...
@@cruejones742 Facts, it's like they're incapable of thinking of a story where androids just exist along side humans and some icky human is the issue instead of the droid.
Hughie really has been trying too hard after losing his girlfriend to A-Train, seems like this is the result of all that pent up trauma. Poor guy. If only he had his boys with him for support.
When i went to see this my theater that i go to only ever played the teaser trailer. I had no idea what was going to happen, and was really suprised where it went. Great movie
The only problem I have with this movie has nothing to do with the actual movie but with the Cinemark app spoiling the detail of iris being a machine. I wish I wasn’t spoiled of that detail because before looking up showtimes I thought the movie was about a love sickness.
I have no intention of ever using a humanoid robot for anything. But for some reasons, I've been watching videos on the building of devices that project notable electric and plasma discharges. Just have uh, a gut feeling I guess. 🤔
I have every intention of getting a companion android if possible to obtain/own one for myself.
Though i got the feeling i won't live to see it to this level, sadly. Born too early for that, it would seem. But i am totally open to being proven wrong. :)
Suffer not the abominable intellegence. Victory for the god emperor..
I personally will do all I can to cooperate and embrace our future with the Basilisk.
why people want human like robots? I much Rather somthing built like WALL-E, or go full Jarvis from iron man
Just as in the movie Vice: Eventually, abusers will want the real victim, and an android won't cut it to be their victim. Black Eyed Susan 2024 was even darker than Companion. Just a way LOWER budget. Wouldn't shock me to know this is all available now, and has been for years.
So glad I got to watch this movie fully blind. Didnt know who was in it and nothing but the title. Saw the poster walking into the cinema. 🎉
Dude, awesome recap! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into it. We'll explained. THANK YOU!
When (not if) the tech reaches that state, i can see people like Josh flourishing, almost remindming me of Nathan from 'Ex Machina'.
Oddly enough, I'm also reminded of the Twilight Zone episode 'The Lonely'. The robot there didn't have time (i think) to develop it's own feelings, even thought Jack Ward's character did indeed love her.
Who else here after watching the movie
"What do you request, Master?" "So, this game is called warthunder. I just need you to play as a fighter so that I dont get shot down before I get my bombs off" [I'm murdered instantly]
Why would the the robots come with intelligence and aggression settings?
Josh jailbroke the two included in the film. I know he did it to Iris.
@ but those setting had to already be in their code though for him to he able to reach it,right?
Watch Valerie..The outer limits episode.
@@gabnel1000well no, it wasn’t just jail breaking. In the movie they said it was a mod. He put a USB into his phone to add stuff to the programming and change it, adding and adjusting things that shouldn’t be there
@@gabnel1000 It would also need the hardware to support it, which would be very odd considering such would likely be absurdly expensive to manufacture, and would be one of the very first corners cut.
Right off the bat, Detroit become human the movie?
How many more Terminators will we get?
Yes.
This looks brilliant!!! I have to see this, yet again you’ve got me to want to see something I’ve never heard about 👍
Wreaks of desperation.
3:52 the supermarket is one of my favorite sets a movie or tv show puts there characters in.
Jack Quaid has been killing it lately
I get that people want to see reskinned versions of relatable film concepts regarding human experiences but ultimately these don't have much meat on them, it's like zombie movies. Getting creative with the technical aspects of worldbuilding and how a zombie or a robot functions to impact the characters as well as worldbuilding is one thing but it's not getting into any new territory at the end of the day. Why do people insist on making playground stimulations out of bizzaro creatures? Why don't they just watch a reskin of Pride and Prejudice or Adventure Time?
Wow, it's excellent and refreshing that this trope-heavy tripe prompted you to make a review.
I like this one. I kinda wish the money plot wasnt in it but rather, A group having a gettaway to celebrate there relation ships. And it just goes full tilt collapse. Over the Dicotomy of them enteracting with each other and the others on there relastionships. Ya know some one human throwing a oppinion out with out thinking the buddy needs context. Then Whoopsie!!!!!! "Why the hell is hanging from the Shandaler?" "You say get wild!"
That’d kind of ruin the point of the humans being the villains. Josh’s whole character is a self proclaimed victim and only seeing her as a tool. Itd be extremely predictable and change the entire tone of it if the companions just started killing or causing chaos.
Skynet in fishnet.
Can you do History of The Savage Land from Marvel Comics and 2005's Skull Island History❤
Good morning Niyat, hope you’ve been coping with the heat lately 🥵
Have you changed up your production team lately? It just seems that your videos have had a bump in style and it’s fantastic.
Broken refrigerators are quite warm. Especially if you had food in them.
Without prioritizing the adoption of Asimov's Three Laws, I feel as though humanity's future with AI is very troubled.
Nice video!
@12:04 "meat cube" means something much different in occupied eastern Ukraine...

Until that second I could have swore it was the chick from Hunger games.
Independent self thinking realistic machines will never be a thing, but clones definitely will be, and probably already are.
We are meant to feel for the robot because she is pretty and under her bad boyfriend's control. She can't lie and must obey him.
Obviously she is not a real woman.
She is a robot. It is completely okay for him to be in control of a robot.
Way to entirely miss the social commentary of this film. Congratulations.
@@Center-For-I.E.D.Mismanagement The social commentary is also extraordinarily overdone, though these days some of that is because of the bland receptiveness of much of the indie horror scene.

From your response, one might infer that you do not think the subject addressed in this film via allegory is an issue worth calling out.
Despite the horrible fact that toxic relationships as depicted have, are and continue to occur.
I love this for her. But i can't wait for my robot boyfriend. I'll be good to him.
YWNBAW
I have a problem with the spider webbed passenger window. Windshields and rear windshields spiderweb crack due to a sticky clear polymer layer laminated between the layers of glass. Passenger windows break into tiny little pieces or not at all. That's why you can escape a car through the passenger windows, not the windshields. Immersion dispelled movie ruined! Jk, but it's annoying
Woah, this is early...
Woah, this is early…

Does everyone want Cylons... Cuz THIS is how we get Cylons ...
Cuz that ls how the Colonies were brought down too, by their Cylon "Companion" Love Bots.. getting WAY too into it.
i think this is a good movie experience
good movie
Do a Dead Rising explored. It's a genetically and biologically modified zombie parasite
I'd see that B movie.
I JUST WANT ROSIE!
Please look at The Ancient Enemy from The Phantoms.
A WORKING 9 to 5 if you will. That kinda comedy with pretty dark humor ya know.!!! Grown up stuff.
Wow. I can't wait to watch this movie. This sounds like an original movie and I like it.
One of the best movies I've seen in the last few years
Must see. A real good movie.
Dont need to now. Thanks RUclips!
Women better look out 😂😂😂
keep those damn things away from me, i rather deal with the real thing or not at all
Have movies become so bad that this is considered “smart”?
A long long time ago
Yes
Even if this becomes real, it's going to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy one. Besides, these things have far less of a soul than R2-D2.
R2-D2 doesnt have a soul either.
@chrisnotyou he gained a consciousness far beyond expected parameters. I'd say R2 gained a close facsimile of one
@chromidius5339 No, you projected those attributes unto a rolling trash can that beeps and makes cute sounds.
Wow thanks marketing for ruining the reveal of her being a robot.
Ooooh
This is as dangerous as bringing back the dinosaurs. Even more so maybe
Its not.
