Worst case it just cycles for zero mana. Second worst case it's a Growth Spiral that untaps all your lands. It's a funny card where even the do-nothing case is actually kind of inherently broken when you think about it.
Like most timewalks do. That card isnt good in a vacuum, its broken when absuing other cards with it. But more often than not its just a $4000 Explore.
When I play Shandalar and my deck has 4xTime Walk, 4xTimetwister and 4xAncestral … I can say that sometimes Time Walk is just a 2 mana draw a card lol.
The Growth Spiral and Explore comparisons fail to account for how Timewalk is "free" (assuming it resolves). The "cycling" mode of Timewalk, where you have nothing in play and cast nothing else that turn.... is essentially "0 mana draw a card, on a blue card". That's not Growth Spiral, that's pretty much Gitaxian Probe. Which is banned in modern, legacy, pauper, and restricted in vintage. So still pretty damn good, even in the "worst case".
I'd love to see a similar style of game as this (starter deck vs. competitive deck), but with the starter deck being able to see the opponent's hand and being able to search their library for any card whenever they would draw. Essentially posing the question, could a starter deck beat a competitive deck if conditions were perfect.
It's a fun idea, but it might need to be a precon with a bit more of a punch than a welcome deck, if only to have removal that's not ridiculously overcosted.
Have them fetch a land every single turn and yeah, I'd take the welcome deck. The other deck basically only gets their starting hand (although depending on the hand, that might be enough)
@sorin_markov I think he meant budget deck gets to draw the perfect card every turn while the meta deck plays normally. More of a "can a starter deck beat the best meta deck with perfect information and the perfect draw in every scenario"
