- Part 5 in the series ''Southeast Turkey'' with Mick and Trudie, in this episode we visit The ancient heads of Mt Nemrut, the Deyrulzafaran Monastery near Mardin, Dara Ruins and The Virgin Mary Monastery at Anıtlı village near Midyat.
This part of Turkey has interesting history going back to the migration of mankind and the development of early religions and the first known agriculture. Some of the first built christian churches and mosques are all in this fascinating region.

Hi, my wife and I have been to turkey many times in the past, mainly Gulets and Club Hotel Letoonia, Fethiye. it really is a beautiful country and the people are so very friendly, but we are worried about the president taking the country down the path of religious conservatism. We have always understood that the country and people are happy to share with other religions, what is your take on how the situation regarding safety of non Muslim or non religious visitors? We had to cancel our trip this year, but we are considering whether to visit Turkey with the current uncertainty over the presidents recent actions..
well i would not go to visit America because of their presidents and policiys if the goverments effect my decision but goverments never represent of their peoples so if the safety is concern i'd go to turkey rather then US cuzz America has the most commited crime rate in the world so ..yeah
More than %50 of people aren't religious, even there are many ateist people. They live safely. Even religious people respect non-muslim people. So you will be safe.

Amazing job Mick Amca, although you say you are slow in editing, you are prducing great quality films, don't pay attention to Chris' critics :) Your work is piece of art. I am not saying Chris's videos are trash but lets say if his production is a delicious dürüm grabbed on the street, your videos would be a fine dine in a gastro-restaurant :) Thanks for inspiring me to travel Eastern Turkey next summer when I am back to my beautuful country. Even though I've travelled from Istanbul to Van Gollu by public transport , I had not heard of Nemrut.............fantastic! I have looked at many reports of Nemrut since then and really must visit this place.
Now retired, I am really tempted to explore Turkey even more and, perhaps, settle down there.

The monastery is Assyrian (Syriac Orthodox) and was established in the 5th century AD, not 16th century.
I agree with you my friend. Most turks they don’t even know where located Mezopotamia. They need to educated. It is in the nature of Turks to steal culture from other peoples and take advantage of them. Those lands where Turks live belong to the Kurds, Assyrians, Romans and Armenians. Have no doubt. We will send them to the Mongoli.

Mick I heard that Northern Turkey is wonderful. Black sea ,not for swimming, Turks say, but the nature, mountains, very green and rich in Culture, I would like to travel from Giresun to Rize and want ot see Trabzon monastery, have you ever been there ?

we went to Nemrut Summer of '97.. there was "motel" at the top of the road to the statues.. not fancy but made it nice to go see the sunset and stay the night.. wonder if it still there.. it looks like they have put that large scenic /cafeteria.
very useful info on Nemrut, it's on my bucket list when I visit Turkey for the 4th time again after the pandemic. Hopefully you will show more on Nemrut during spring? the sunrise/sunset must be spectacular. So the closest airport will be in Antalya then?

A long trip by car ( if that was the case ) from Fetihye to the very south-eastern Turkey. But well worth it.

You should also visit Diyarbakır which is the oldest abd biggest city of Southeast Anatolia.
Really enjoyed this one and the Gaziantep one. Was meant to go to both places two years ago but plans got changed. Really want to go to the Zeugma museum. Will get there one day. Safe travels.

Hello Mick and Trudy, these are old Armenian historic sites, not Turkish. Turkey celebrated its 569th Anniversary about four weeks ago. Ottoman Turkey was established in 1450s AD. About 3400 historic sites in Turkey (Tyrkiye new spelling) are Greek, 3800 are Armenian, 600 are Jewish and Assyrian, 700 Turkish. Three countries: Greece, Armenia, and Israel exist and their historic sites should not be attributed to Turkey. Assyrians live in different countries. Armenian and Greek history go back thousands of years in Turkey.
I’m sorry but this is not relevant to this video and most places in the world have ruins from different dynasties it’s not a problem it’s just history
@@mickandtrudie- I agree with you it is history, but Turkish governments gave always rejected the existence of Greeks and Armenians on those lands an natives. They have pretended that they were there before these other countries. I had Turkish friends who told me that Greeks, Armenians and Iranians stole their lands and their history. Also, that they did not have those two nations in their history books. English do not says that Hadrian wall was built by English, they said it was built by Romans. The sites you are mentioning do not go back to Hittites etc. What happens to the name Greek or Armenian palaces? For never 100 years the West had falsified the history of Tyrkiye for geopolitical gains.

Another interesting fact is that cars, buses and big dump trucks were still driving on Cendere Bridge up until 10 years ago because main road went over the bridge.

Monastery is founded at 493 AD, 5th century. It has been renovated many times. It is one of the first monasteries still surviving!
