You are so welcome! I remember your comment and these are the things that can be a large factor for people. Of course there are people who may think a side brush is not need on carpet and that could be true if you suppliment with another vacuum every week or so.
Our old Roborock S1 has left a wear line around all the edges of our carpets due to I assume the side brush. Maybe this change is to try to prevent that carpet wear.

Hi Jamie, I just received my X40 Ultra, and I find the vacuum performance mediocre, it would struggle to pickup cat litter on Max+. I'm using the rubber brush (don't have the tricut just yet). I can easily see a gap between the brush and the floor, i.e. the floor does not touch the ground, not sure if this is normal or not. Customer service has not been of much help so far. I would really appreciate if you could let me know if you see a gap or not, and how far the rubber brush should be from the floor. Thank you!

@@jamie.andrewsI would like to see your comparison review on these too. Although I already tested them both myself and chose the s1 pro in the end. The water coming from the s1 pro is dirtier than what comes out of the x40 even after diluting it to be similar to the x40 in volume it water. Also I measured that s1 pro sucks up about 50% of the water it used on floors without obstacles and about 25% of the water it used when running in my kitchen/dining area, I expect the struggles around table and chairs to be the reason for this. The additional maintenance seems neglible since my floors are generally quite clean and I don’t have pets or kids making a mess. Obstacle avoidance is better on the x40, especially at night due to the light, but it’s good enough on the s1 pro. Also I have hue lights anyway so I just turn them on automatically when the s1 pro does it thing. The x40 is more quiet but it runs when I sleep so no issue they’re aswell. The x40 is the superior vaccuum, but that doesn’t really matter on hard floors that get vacuumed every day. Don’t care about 1-3% more efficiency if the x40 when it gets done every day. In the end I just thought really long and hard about what the s1 pro can do and the x40 can’t; suck up the dirty water. In the end imo it’s the superior technology for cleaning the floors. Mopping close to the wall is a non issue imo. That doesn’t get dirty. And for my carpet I have a Dyson that I can use for deep cleaning every couple of months.
Hi, could you give a timelapse video of cleaning the whole room, I would like to see how the robot behaves in reality. If it wanders or drives nicely or spins
Saw both your reviews for the new roborock curv and this dreame x40 ultra. I'm debating between one or the other for this black friday. Which would you choose after having used them?
This is the official answer from Dreame support about the side brush (After many tests in the research lab, we found that the side brush not only could not clean the carpet, but even caused damage to the carpet, so we disabled the side brush function on the carpet.) I have share your video in my Dreame group on Facebook with 8 k followers 👍 As always nice video! 😍🙏
Sounds like they removed a flaw by disabling it. I'm not sure how it could damage carpets though.Maybe rugs? I'll have to study it a bit more now. Thanks for sharing here and there!
@@jamie.andrews Yeah, maybe! But personally, I believe that a brush is a must for a carpet. You're welcome to be part of the group and share your videos directly 👍.
I agree with your sentiments. This seems to me to be a ridiculous response from Dreame. @jamie.andrews Did you do any experimenting with the global setting which I believe is on the "Carpet Cleaning" page and is the last setting on the page labelled "Ignore"? As I understand it that will force the X40 to treat carpets and rugs as if they are hard floors so it will force it to use the side brush not only on hard floors but also on carpets and rugs. Like @adrispiro9426 that's pretty important to me because seeing what a good job the side brush does of cleaning into corners on hard floors, and under the edges of furniture, I find it crazy that on carpets the X40 in default settings won't clean the corners of my carpeted rooms, under the edge of beds, bedside tables etc. As I understand it (I don't have an X40) the downside of activating the "Carpet Settings/Ignore" option (if that's what it's called) is that if requested the X40 would then happily mop a carpet or rug but I assume that by being careful to get an accurate map in terms of defining rugs (no mop zones) and accurate positioning of the room thresholds between carpeted and non-carpeted rooms then properly defined cleaning jobs should ensure that you never put the X40 into a situation where it would mop a carpet or rug. Also in a house with even a single high-pile (shag) carpet that might tangle the side brush Carpets/Ignore wouldn't be an option because it's a global setting. For me though I think setting Carpets/Ignore to on might work.
Sounds strange to me given how almost every other robot vacuum out there uses at least one - and in some cases like Ecovacs two - side brushes on carpets seemingly without getting loads of complaints from users about carpet damage. I've seen mention in another review of a setting in the app, on the "Carpet Settings page" called "Ignore" which when set tells the X40 to treat all surfaces as if they are hard floors i.e. use the side brush everywhere. The only issue I see with that is the danger of accidentally mopping a carpet or rug but I assume that provided one is careful to accurately define no-mop areas for any rugs and to make sure that all room boundaries between carpeted and hard-floored rooms are very accurately placed to reflect where the edges of carpets are then everything should be OK. If I get an X40 I'm hoping that setting Carpets/Ignore to on will work for me because most of my rooms are carpeted and missing out on having the side brush get into the corners would really bug me especially seeing what a good job it does on hard floors.
Hi Jamie, Thanks for your great reviews, my home is 50% hard wood floor and 50% rugs, I had Roborock S5 and now Roborock S8 (no dock) and I'm very happy with it since I don't have my wife's hair tangle on S8 DuoRoller! now I decide to buy new one with dock. I was going to buy Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra till I see dreame X40. Is dreame really better than Roborock?
I'm having a docking issue with my X40 when the dock is on medium/high pile carpets. The issue is with the ramp extension where the end of it has an upward curve to it whereas the X30 ramp extension does not have that. It's flat. I'm not sure it was changed since it makes it difficult for the robot to get over that curve on the edge of the ramp as it's backing up. The issue only occurs if the mop pads are not installed. I presume that the ramp extension on the X30 will work on the X40 dock. Are you able to confirm?
Where which one do you think the better buy? S10, x20, x30 or x40? I still waiting for this robot to achieve AUD$ 1500, currently only S10 that go below that around $1200, still waiting for x20 to reach that mark..
A better buy depends greatly on the market price of one compared to another. It also depends on the needs and wants of the buyer as well. I'm a fan of all of these robots you listed. Right now in the L20 Ultra is over $1000 less than the X40. It has a good bit less features, but for some those features are worth it and for others totally not. If it were me I would buy an L20 Ultra and a Roborock Dyad Pro or Flexi Pro and have an excellant combo plus have enough left over to buy some supplies.
This is currently on sale Amazon for $1350, but I've heard that manh users experienced the side brush error/tangled. Have you experienced this issue yet Jamie?
Im curious how the x40 will compare to a qrevo master. I have the master at the moment but it seems to have issues with pet hair - it doesnt get tabgled, but weaves them into a bundle it can't suck up.
Here is my review of the Freo Z. It would likely come down to how much the cons I pointed out on the Freo bother you. ruclips.net/video/TTKlSsKi19U/видео.html
Thanks for the long awaited review. The S40 Master will be available this week in Europe. It is the same, but with a smaller dock because of the integrated plumbing. The dock has a removable bad tray. I don't know if it will come to the US. I will buy that one now with confidence. One question, since you can turn pet vaste off, will that improve the object avoidance to be less carful?
No word on my end about that coming to the US. No turning pet detection off has not solved that problem as many of the things that it mistakes are not labeled as pet waste.
@@jamie.andrews I assume you can turn off object avoidance altogether if that works for someone who always keeps very uncluttered floors. If Dreame can't get it working nicely all the time then maybe, rather than something like turning off pet waste avoidance, some sort of sensitivity setting might be possible so that users could set it to whatever they felt was appropriate for their circumstances. That might not be that difficult for Dreame to implement because most object recognition algorithms determine a confidence level when they "think" they have recognised an object so I'm thinking that a sensitivity level setting might simply be an adjustment to the threshold level at which the firmware determines that the confidence level returned by the object recognition algorithm is high enough for what it sees to be treated as an object to be avoided. If that was ever done then maybe you might want a separate sensitivity setting for pet waste so that a user could tell the system to still be ultra-cautious if it thinks something is pet waste but to give anything else more benefit of the doubt as to whether it is an object or not.

@@jamie.andrews yep, prior to about 5 years ago, robot vacuums were honestly very bad for 95% of people and homes. But robot vacuums have come so far in the last 5 years that I would honestly recommend every home to have one, They are absolutely life changing. Its not even about the amount of time saved, they also clean the floors better than humans because they can wash your floor everyday, unlike before where I would only wash the floors once a week.
I have one of the older models the L20. Unfortunately its sensors and cameras failed to detect pet feces and it ran it over and smeared it all over my carpet. As well as completely caking the bottom of my L20 with feces. Dreamtech is unwilling to service it. Completely frustrated. Especially since they keep making new models instead of maintaining or updating their older ones.
So which robot in the market has THE best object avoidance and navigation amongst those you've tested? Assume it comes down to one of these: Dreame L10s vs L20s vs X30 vs Eufy X10 vs S1 Pro?
@@jamie.andrews I thought you would have said the Eufy S1 Pro since in your review it scored perfectly in the object avoidance test and you mentioned that you never saw it bump into anything. Also, in SmartHomeAssistent's review (the German tech review RUclips channel) - it cleaned their test room much faster than the other robots - so efficient in terms of time as well it seems.
I will have a comparison video of these 2 out in the future. If you get a chance take a look at my S8 MaxV video on the mean time. ruclips.net/video/CmWjtQRcG4s/видео.htmlsi=T16AF5h_kWWHr-6a Each model has a few drawbacks. . Depending on the person one could be a deal breaker over the other one.
Can confirm that the object detection is to way to much. after 15 "ignore" detection setups it still thinks that my lamp base needs to be avoided. To avoid this I set up to bump into thinks. it still detects this and makes photos in the app but cleans to the edge. Great video and matches my experience.
@@jamie.andrews But what does the single use mean. Will the suction motor overheat and blow up if I use it twice? I know I can’t schedule jobs daily to use that suction as the software won’t let me. I have a suspicion the motor isn’t rated for that power but the setting is there to get the results for RUclips reviewers.
@@gibbedyg9369 It means you have to manually select it each time you use it due to it using more battery. I would not use it unless there is a big mess to clean up. It will not blow up if you use it every single time. Just use more battery and make more noise. BTW this is nothing new. Been this way for years on many robots.
I wish they would, but atleast their side brush works on carpet. Each of these robots have some flaws that I wish were not present on flagship products. I'll be doing a head to head soon with these 2.

Nice machine, but at $1900 retail, I'll be sticking with my Roborock S7 for a good while longer. It works well enough. The reduction in noise would be nice though.
Great review again, I think upgrades every couple of months is justified (it gives you something new to review, right??😄) Vacuum is starting to fill my feature wishlist. Except move the lidar to the top lip, & make the vacuum physically smaller so it can get to hard to reach areas. (I don't need it but what about stairways too??) Base station I'd like features like an inbuilt air purifier/humidifier/dehumidifier, plus upgrades to the things you mentioned. Also I'm waiting for price to drop, as that would cost $3000-$4000 in region where I live.
99% of docks on the market do not have this feature. You are the first person to comment this to be an issue for what it is worth. My suggestion for someone who is needed this it to buy a dock with one which is pretty limited or just not use an auto empty dock at all.
Hi Jamie, Please don't get me wrong. This robo vacuum is probably the absolute best at the moment. You are correct, there are very few manufacturers to implement additional hepa filtration but nevertheless they exist. That's exactly my point. Why not? It's 2024 and hepas are around for a very long time. We know alot in this day and age about dangers of micro dust particles right? These docking stations provide enough suction power to push the exhaust air through an additional hepa. There is no arguing about that. The additional cost would be marginal and very easy to manufacture. It's no secret. The sole purpose of vacuuming is a clean floor but also clean air and unfortunately designs like we see here, push a lot of micro dust back into the room. The whole concept is somewhat contradictory. The robot has an hepa filter in the cartridge but the docking station has not. I truly wonder why manufacturers would skip a very important filtration component like this. Btw. Keep up the amazing work. Your channel rocks!!👍 you have a new subscriber ;)

Navigarion and object avoidance are what I consider to be 2 different things and I rate them differently. If you want the best overall it is Dreame.
@@thomasp5779 the Eufy scored way lower than the Dreame.
@@petitbarzun yes overall but higher for object avoidance.
I think dreame is actually not very good with navigation its averageish, but they have probably the best object avoidance.
My house has all hardfloor, and the asking price from S8 MarkV ultra and Dreame X40 ultra are same in Vietnam. Which one should i purchase ???
S8 MaxV Ultra 👍
Neither. Get the Eufy S1 Pro. It's the best for hardfloors
I will have a comparison video of these 2 out in the future. If you get a chance take a look at my S8 MaxV video on the mean time. ruclips.net/video/CmWjtQRcG4s/видео.htmlsi=T16AF5h_kWWHr-6a
Each model has a few drawbacks. . Depending on the person one could be a deal breaker over the other one.
@@salimnasser8081 unfortunately, this model is not common in vietnam. For after sales services, 2 models above have authorized stores in vietnam.
@@jamie.andrews thank Jamie, i,m gonna looking for your video before purchasing.
Can confirm that the object detection is to way to much. after 15 "ignore" detection setups it still thinks that my lamp base needs to be avoided. To avoid this I set up to bump into thinks. it still detects this and makes photos in the app but cleans to the edge.
Great video and matches my experience.
Yea it is really insane how much it thinks everything is an object to be avoided.
Where in the settings is this please?
Any comments on potential updates over the last few months that have fixed this?
Do u have any idea if the Dreame docks are interchangable? 😅
no
@@not-8909you mean Yes, they are not interchangeable
Did you notice a noise increase with the tricut brush installed?
For me it sounds like a lawnmower, I think it's the brush hitting the floor.
Yes slightly. It is likely because of the 2 sided shape. Acts like a fan with 2 blades.
Why doesn't the side brush work on carpet?
I'm not real sure their real reason.
I found the dreame x30 for about 750 dollars on ali express alot cheaper than the x40 so I am thinking to go with the x30
No reason not to. That is insanely cheap if new.
How does it compare to other brands flagships?
Have a look at the S8 Maxv video from Jamie
Flaws aside it is very impressive and imo only the S8 MaxV Ultra can compete.
@@jamie.andrews if you had to buy just one TODAY?
What does max+ single use mode mean?
It taps into the highest power of the vacuum motor.
This or the Roborock S8 MaxV ?
I plan on doing a head to head video soon.
If Roborock fixes the problems with the side brush on the s8 maxv then both of them are really similar in performance.
I wish they would, but atleast their side brush works on carpet. Each of these robots have some flaws that I wish were not present on flagship products. I'll be doing a head to head soon with these 2.
@@jamie.andrews They say there's a firmware update on the S8 MaxV that released just yesterday that would fix (or at least improve) the S8 MaxV Flexiarm. I can't really tell myself though, as I don't have the update yet, seems it rolls out later in Europe.
@@Sjoerd1993 Thanks for the heads up. No update here either.

Nice machine, but at $1900 retail, I'll be sticking with my Roborock S7 for a good while longer. It works well enough. The reduction in noise would be nice though.
My feeling too, I have the S8 and it works very well. There is going to have to be a major improvement for me to upgrade.
Great review again, I think upgrades every couple of months is justified (it gives you something new to review, right??😄)
Vacuum is starting to fill my feature wishlist. Except move the lidar to the top lip, & make the vacuum physically smaller so it can get to hard to reach areas. (I don't need it but what about stairways too??)
Base station I'd like features like an inbuilt air purifier/humidifier/dehumidifier, plus upgrades to the things you mentioned.
Also I'm waiting for price to drop, as that would cost $3000-$4000 in region where I live.
So for this year for sure Dreame has won the robot war with Roborock a close second. Design wise Roborock wins by far.
Base station has no Hepa exhaust filter, only simple bag. What's the point of vacuuming if no Hepa?? What a joke at that price range.
99% of docks on the market do not have this feature. You are the first person to comment this to be an issue for what it is worth. My suggestion for someone who is needed this it to buy a dock with one which is pretty limited or just not use an auto empty dock at all.
Hi Jamie,
Please don't get me wrong.
I think dreame will release the x50 in 2025. Should be more powerful and better than the x40.
Yep
I think they should’ve skipped the X30. Didn’t need that one
Yea I can certainly see that as well.
