    That 2013-2014 offense still amazes me. The heat just looked so lost and the spurs looked so calm. Sometimes it seemed like the cameraman couldn't even keep up with the ball.

      happyaccidents The Spurs were what you call hot and in flow, it's not like they were like that through-out the playoffs, just ask the mavs and the thunder. The best team ever in the finals is the 1996-98 Bulls.

    This is exactly why Pop us the greatest coach in NBA history. He was not only able to win in different eras but he was able to evolve with the times and still dominate.

      marblee That is still up for debate but to be completely honest there is little argument against Pop lol
      But there's also little argument against other coaches too
      The mantle for greatest coach is really a matter of opinion. But I will say this, Poppovich is most definitely in the conversation.

    • @FGPlus
      @FGPlus 9 лет назад +14

      Doesn't matter. He has been a part of three different three peats. It is hard enough to win a championship, but to win three in a row three times. That cannot be glossed over because he had good players.

    • @pullupthen5073
      @pullupthen5073 9 лет назад +5

      I don't care who Phil had on his teams, winning 11 championships is not easy at all. Tex Winter invented the Triangle, so what? Tex got the basic idea of the Triangle offense from Sam Berry who coached at USC. You can't tell me that that Phil didn't have a hand in the offense either. Because on the last 2 Laker championships they didn't run a pure Triangle. To say that he's overrated is ridicules

      +LaMidrange Aldridge I dunno. But he certainly got the most out of a young Stephen Jackson before he became a headcase to other teams. And he did sign richard jefferson around mid 2000's because of what he showed being a feature offensive player for the Nets for one season. Then showed absolutely nothing of that potential thereafter. But somewhere in there he gets the attitude he wants knowing the talent that is already there.

      I think that's because if you score from a single step further,you are rewarded with an extra point,so people take the 3 instead of the long 2.Then again if a player feels comfortable shooting the long 2 there's no real reason not to do it.

    I remember something Dave Odom (or maybe Randolph Childress) said about Duncan back in the 1990s. That he really wanted to be a point guard to get his teammates involved. The Spurs system was always Duncan, not Pop, whether it was skip passes from the low post, high low action, pinch post, or passing out of the pick and roll. It's just a matter of how much Duncan's coaches trusted him to be the fulcrum of the offense. Even by big-man standards, Duncan's passing was boring (compared to someone like Sabonis), so he never got the credit he deserved.

  • @lolunderstated533
    @lolunderstated533 9 лет назад +3

    The last few seconds got me emotional seeing how much Pop and Duncan love each other. Pop has said Duncan has been his favorite player to coach of all time and it shows. Nice to see someone as serious as Pop show his soft side from time to time to show his appreciation for his favorite player that he raised on the NBA court from a young man with potential to the best power forward to ever play the game.

    • @jermaineonealnumber7
      @jermaineonealnumber7 9 лет назад

      +LoLUnderstated I'd go even a step further, early in TD's career he lost his father. Pop clearly took over as a father-figure here and it worked, chemistry wise. Also Tim has mentioned numerous times he doesn't understand how players can have 3 to 4 coaches, even more in their careers, regarding changing of systems, playing styles etc. You know how close it got TD almost got traded to the Magic, there were some serious talks. Imagine if it had just been another ordinary dime-a-dozen player-coach relationship. Pop admitting: "at least I didn't scare him off" lol.

    I always hated how everyone associates today's style of offense with the Golden State Warriors when the Spurs should be the ones who deserve the credit. Their player and ball movement in 2014 was a thing of absolute beauty. The only differences (apart from motion vs. read-and-react offenses) was that the Warriors shot more 3s and played a faster pace.

    Thank you so much. Living in Germany back in the early 2000s meant maybe catching 3-4 games a year. Always condensed, most of the time there were just highlights and nothing else.
    So naturally being a Spurs fan in 2002 meant looking up scores, reading basketball magazines and maybe get some information online, but nothing a 13 year old kid could really do, especially since the games that you could watch were on Pay TV and I couldn't afford that.
    So seeing some old footage of all the championships I missed, because even now they are hard to find on the internet, I really appreciate you showing them and commenting on it. So thank you very much Coach Nick, I appreciate this video a lot.

    Great video coach Nick, lifetime basketball junkyard (age 51), and I'd like to add another reason for the rapid evolution of offense from powerball (80s Lakers and Celtics are iconic for this) to today's spread, movement offense. BOTTOM LINE, IN ORDER TO PLAY POWERBALL AND WIN YOU HAVE TO HAVE A JABBAR, MCHALE & Parish, Moses Malone,Olajuwon, Duncan, Robinson, Shaq. Since those guys come around every 10 or more years, you can't expect to ever get one. Nobody knew how to win without a HOF (or two) big guy. From 1980-88, EVERY NBA Champion had one or more dominant big men. When the 1988 expansion occurred (Charlotte, Minnesota), teams knew the chances of ever getting a dominant big men went from small to hopeless. Detroit,, then Chicago, saw the crystal ball, and changed the game to a pressure defense to create offense, and then offenses like the triangle to create shots without requiring an automatic double team on the dominant big men. Since 1988, power ball reared its head only for Olajuwon, (94-95), Shaq (with triangle principles but plenty of straight power post up) in LA.( 2000-02), and early Duncan championships. There is not a single dominant power post up player left, therefore, adapt did. I would gladly love to hear your thoughts, good, bad, or indifferent

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 9 лет назад

      +jerry weihe I think it has to do with that there aren't any real dominant offensive post players anymore (Shaq IMO was a pedigree of his own. A 300 lbs monster with FOOTWORK that rivals Lebron in the post had no problem scoring 30-40pts ) along with certain rule changes established in the early 2000's that promoted teams to exploit a more stable commodity which was athletic perimeter and wing players who can get to the hoop. Now I don't know if the NBA big wigs saw the crystal ball with the end of the era of true dominant pivot men on offense, but since the late 2000's and towards the 2010's, much of the offensive strategy has shifted to perimeter and wing players who not only can attack, but shoot effectively and have a more frequent and aggressive PnR game.
      Hell the double team philosophy now is slowly shifting. People still think an effective post up game draws favorable double team match ups. But drawing double teams off a really good offensive perimeter or wing player who can shoot opens up even more opportunities for teammates at the right proper position across the court.

    • @mrhoopfan1
      @mrhoopfan1 9 лет назад

      +jerry weihe You are forgetting the Lakers team with Pau and Bynum plus that Pistons squad played with two traditional bigs and a 3 man that posted. It can work....Pace and Space is the supposed new era of NBA hoops but it doesn't have to be THE way. You can argue that to play SMALL BALL you have to have a LEBRON, STEPH CURRY +KLAY THOMPSON(may end up greatest shooting backcourt ever). I think it's a shame the lack of down low scoring. Watching 7 footers shoot long jumpers consistently I don't find appealing personally.

You could release another 'Coaches Porn' video based on the 2014 Spurs offense and it would be like a feature length film. And the way he has instilled a family mentality with his guys is admirable. I think that Pop and Duncan go out with a bang next June, with Duncan playing the role of '03 David Robinson, passing on the torch to the human Sharktopus in Kawhi Leonard and the Tim Duncan remix in Lamarcus Aldridge. But again, major props for going to the effort of making this vid, Coach Nick. As a basketball fan, it doesn't get any better than Spurs basketball.

    2013-14 version of the spurs in the finals is by far the best team basketball I ever saw and I don't know how basketball can look any better and be more effective on offense. it was just perfection and almost scary how 5 different players can trully look like one on the court.

    Looking images of their last finals, it's kind of perfection. The ball moves so quickly.

    Just a little FYI. Phil Jackson wanted to put an asterisk on the 99 season because reporters were trying to compare Popovich's Spurs to Phil's Lakers since both teams went through each other on the way to a championship. Phil Jackson said you'd have to put an asterisk on the 99 season BECAUSE HE WASN'T THE COACH that year when the Spurs swept the Lakers in the playoffs.

    Oh the memories. I barely remember the 99 championship, but I clearly remember the next one. Steve Kerr had buried treys for an amazing comeback against Dallas in Western finals. Then we had a young Stephen Jackson. The Admiral had 13 pts and 17 rebs in game 6. And Duncan, he almost had a quadruple double. He was unstoppable back then, and the best player in the league.
    Oh wait, he still is.

    Of course, the learning curve for the spurs offense is steep given that they probably run a lot more different plays with a lot more different players (since the oldies sit out often these days) and the new addition of aldridge and company might slow down the offense like any other newer team. So it's just crazy they can maintain a 50-9 record right now

    Excellent video. The constant movement of both player and ball in 13-14 was pure basketball beauty for the entire series. Love that you mentioned Parker's "new fundamental" habit of wrong foot layups. These are vastly underrated across basketball. Have only recently started watching your vids, I'm curious as to what else you classify as new fundamentals?

      Hollis Wong when your personnel changed from defensive powerhouses and mediocre guards to shooters and swingmen plus a top tier PG ...you are forced to come up with different plans...(yes i say AJ is mediocre, come at me bro... elliot was good tho)
      (and i recall there was an interview, in which Parker talked about how Coach Pop ordered him to get to his office 3 hours before every practice started, just to have him go over tapes and playbook sets...guess this is how you make a 19yo learn things, just make him)

    • @thomaspriday9731
      @thomaspriday9731 9 лет назад

      Hollis Wong A lot of it is Pop developing as a coach..
      in the early days he couldn't coach offense. He just relied on Duncan to carry the team.
      Then he got better, and schemed one of the greatest offensive of all time.

    We can talk all we want about Pop and Phil, but I'll throw this in for thought: Phil is a Paxson 3 (93), an MJ game winner (98), an Horry buzzer beater (02), a Perkins injury (10) from very possibly having only 7 rings. And Pop is a Fisher miracle shot (04), a Ginobili foul (06), an Allen miracle 3 (13) from very possibly having *8* rings.
    It's a lot closer than people think, when it comes to championships.
    I personally gotta give the nod to Pop here. The video has shown how he has constantly adapted and just think about how he has won TITLES with
    1. *Old guys in the rotation*: a 33 year old Avery Johnson, a 35 year old Mario Elie, a 35 year old Brent Barry, a 36 year old Robert Horry, a 37 year old Steve Kerr, a 33 year old Michael Finley. And then of course you have a 37 year old Duncan, a 37 year old Robinson, and a 36 year old Ginobili.
    2. *Reclamation projects and guys "pulled off the street" in the rotation*: Malik Rose, Jaren Jackson, Fabricio Oberto, Patty Mills, Danny Green, Boris Diaw, Nazr Mohammed, Francisco Elson, Speedy Claxton
    3. *Talented but flawed players who his staff developed*: Tony Parker (could he play defense and did he have a jumpshot?), Kawhi Leonard (did he have a jumpshot?), Tiago Splitter (how much offense could he provide?), Bruce Bowen (how much offense could he provide?), Matt Bonner (could he play defense?), Stephen Jackson (could he reign in his craziness?)
    WOW that ended up being MUCH longer than I expected but that just goes to show how phenomenal a coach he is. I'm a high school chemistry teacher and Pop is honestly one of my inspirations.
