Ok, I might be late to the party, but you sold me on getting a Volca sample mk1 just for the pajen firmware (already own the sequencer otherwise I might have choose something else on the same limited budget) Thanks for the sweet demo !
Need to install this on my Volca Sample! The chromatic feature alone is super cool! 👍 Is it a pretty solid build? I will probably wait until my vSample 2 comes in... and then I will try this out. 😁 Great video! thanks! 🙂
Yeah it's really solid. Never have encountered any bugs or anything like that. Works great and definitely helped me to get some more mileage out of this thing. No word yet on if Pajen will do one for the v2.
Functionality wise, I'm trying to decide between buying a Sample 1 and install the Pajen firmware vs buying a Sample 2 and get the Retrokit RK-002 smart MIDI cable. Is there an advantage of either setup? Am I mixing oranges with apples?
@@StevenTanner-p8h I've only used the first so I'm not sure I can offer much information from a comparative perspective. I think you'd be fine with either of those choices. The additional storage space on the V2 is attractive to me.
@@MattGreerMusic it is indeed. i had a 1st gen version two yrs ago and it was really fun. Now i have Maschine mkIII so im wondering how i can exploit Sample 2 connected to Maschine via MIDI. it will be interesting.
I've just uploaded on my Volca the pajen SYS.but I din't get how to separate the drum part to the rest. IE: playing bass with midi #1 and drum with a different MIDI.
Did you get it figured out? I didn't mess with the MIDI configs on the Sample. I'm still using the MIDI channels 1 - 10 just like on the stock Korg firmware.
@@MattGreerMusic Do you mean that you played different chromatic tunes on Midi channels 1 to 3 for three different "instruments"? That is, 3 of the Volca's parts (= samples) are operated by the OP-Z via 3 different Midi channels?
Thanks for the video, I'm planning to install Pajen's firmware on my Volca Sample too. One thing I still couldn't figure out is whether I can export patterns and sequences from my Volca Sample to a laptop to later use it. Do you have any idea if this possible?
Just wanted to say that there's a MIDI OUT mod which allows for most of the things to be sent via MIDI. I didn't try it yet, but there are cheap solderless kits on eBay. Otherwise, you may way to record the patterns part-by-part by unmuting single tracks, e.g., for polishing/mixing/mastering on the laptop. That is probably the easiest and most reliable way to go, in case you don't need to load the result back into volca
The point of the video was to show off the Pajen firmware update and what is capable from using an external sequencer. I used an OP-Z but it could have been a beatstep pro, Ableton, Digitakt and so on.
heres a flip i made using pajen and a midi step sequencer with a couple of controllers mapped to the filter and sample start, also the level is controlled with velocity. quite a fun device now! ruclips.net/user/shortsYWcSdfL-CIc
True the OP-Z is not cheap but it offers so much in such a small, portable package. It's no lie one of my favorite devices of all time. I use it constantly.

Wow! I hope the new sample gets this update.
Yeah that would be cool.
Thanks for this video, I just got an OPZ and this is an awesome way to expand your sound selection
Glad it was helpful!
Watch the used price for the Volca Sample and OPZ rise after this! Great work- talk about a portable pocket music recording studio!
It's opened up the Volca Sample so much.

@@MattGreerMusic We can only hope V2 gets the Pajen treatment. That would be a beast!
Tried it on my Sample 2 an hour ago. Err! Err!
@@80Jay71 Unfortunately the Pajen firmware only works with the V. Sample 1 (i.e. the old one _without_ the USB port).

Shame there's no pajen firmware for the Volca sample 2 :(
would this FW be compatible with Sample 2?
To my knowledge this is not available for the Sample 2. Not sure if they plan on releasing one or not.
@@MattGreerMusic thanks for the reply. i should have waited for the answer before i ordered new Sample 2 few hrs ago :)
Still a nice little music maker either way.

How do you set up the mutes?
Hope it will work with SQ64.
If a buy a beatstep 1 ..
I can make this?
I don't know. That's a pretty basic sequencer.
What is the benefit of using the Volca here? Why not just load the samples directly into the OP-Z and play them from there into your recorder?

note very useful with a opz but Magic when you have only a budget midi controler
Will work great with beatstep pro too. Now feel sorry that i have sold mine Volca sample.😁

What firmware version is this ?
The Volca Sample or the OP-Z? If the Sample, it is the "Pajen" unofficial firmware. I'm not sure what the version # is.
@@MattGreerMusic thanks. I meant pajen firmware. Now to score an Op-z , they are pricey.
