    A Tesla sits 7 people max, put a bus in and you can seat 30-50 people per vehicle. Put a train in and you have 500 people per vehicle. But that’s just a subway and that’s apparently too boring

      @@HarrisonAdAstra Speaking of which, Los Angeles is seriously considering building a monorail in the Sepulveda pass/405 freeway instead of the subway line approved in measure M all because a company that financed the campaigns of LA's mayor and other suburban mayors on the Metro board of directors offered to build the line themselves as a public private partnership. Never mind that another less-corrupt company is offering to do the same, but with the actual subway line thats legally mandated and higher capacity than the monorail on a line thats set to replace the most congested highway in America, those people don't pay the right people, so the better project is likley to get struck down

      @@HarrisonAdAstra Seriously? This tunnel has a transportation capacity of 4500 person per hour but I think in practice it will be less. The subway where I live transports 3000 people per 4 mins(each train) and thats 45000 people per hour. So the subway has 10 times more capacity than this.

      it isn't, but it's also in a country/area of a country that absolutely despises public transport in any form and refuses to invest in it. So I guess one just makes a luxury gimmick ride for the rich folk.

      While it's obviously ridiculously stupid in a city like Amsterdam, is somewhere like Vegas, LA etc so car-centric that it's actually not a bad thing?
      My own answer to this devils advocate question is no, they should just move towards walkability (maybe Vegas is legit too hot to walk), cycle infrastructure and actual public transport like a f***ing subway/metro

      @@jackredmond5643 This is correct, I've never been near LV but I know its said to be too hot to be on the surface during the day outside. Only at nighttime is it comfortable
      So it makes sense anything would be made underground

      HYPErloop as its name indicates, is just hype. Nobody wants to have the same issues as in space down on earth, obviously that project was dead at birth. Elon is seen as a great visionary because he has the capacity of making others dream about the future, even though 80% of what he says is complete nonesense, people would just love him.

    Las Vegas Loop development steps:
    1. make a tunnel
    2. realize that putting more people into a vehicle reduces the number of vehicles, sort of like busses.
    3. realize that putting the vehicle on some sort of rails allows for faster travelling speed
    Congratulations, you have just re-invented subway. In the current form, these tunnels would be better suited for bicicles.

      I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they eventually scrap the cars and just give people bikes or e-scooters to use in the tunnels instead. The tunnels are pretty small for a car to fit through, but they'd be a pretty good size for bikes/e-scooters.

    It's kind of amazing that the strip and downtown Vegas doesn't already have a subway or LRT line. The city layout is basically perfect for it with nothing too far from Las Vegas Blvd. As is the pedestrian traffic is basically comparable to Manhattan since everyone is a tourist without a car.

      The battle on public transport has always been where the stations would be. Unless every casino is getting a station, they fight tooth and nail to keep the other guy from getting it build 2 feet closer to his property than their's. This has been somewhat ameliorated by the consolidation of casino ownership to just a handful of companies. And it's only know becoming a priority, public trans, because the cost of the land is so great it can't be wasted on parking garages. I'm surprised Vegas casinos aren't focused on getting their workers in and out and stop wasting all that space on employee parking.

      I believe that extending the monorail to the airport, something that would have made it infinitely more valuable, was fought by the taxi companies. And probably opposed by the casinos on the other side of the strip for which it has much less value. They should have made the monorail go from downtown down the strip to the airport. But unfortunately it began as a connection for two casinos on their rear side and was extended on that rear side.

    Why would this be more efficient than a regular subway? This system cannot transport enough people to make a difference ... if it tries, there will be jams, just like on any road.

      They really should just stick some low-floor trams into those tunnels and create a citywide tram network, where they are underground in the city center, and are in the median of wide streets in the suburbs. Get Alstom to build some Citadis Dualis trams for them, problem solved

    A city like Las Vegas seems perfect for light rail/trams - a relatively compact city core, being able to easily get on and off on the street to visit multiple attractions. While a good proof of concept, it's a ridiculous one at that.

      For me it shows how big the USes aversion to public transport is. A city like Vagas would indeed be perfect for a light rail or subway system. Has been for years. But the only one doing anything is a billionair who does what he wants...

      @@gabrielonibudo5710 Any form of public transit will have higher throughput than cars. Cars use up a lot of energy to propel a 1 ton vehicle with an average of 1-2 people. This is extremely bad in terms of efficiency. You might as well use a subway with non-renewable resources.

    Should be an electric light rail system. Using battery powered cars is really inefficient.

      I agree. Lay down guide rails in those tunnels and replace the Teslas with pods that can carry 5 to 10 people.
      If there are dozens of stations throughout the city, it would be appealing to take a private pod direct from one station to your destination, without having to ride a crowded train and change trains at certain stations.
      They could charge a premium over a bus or taxi or subway for the equivalent distance

      @@fredashay Guide rails are very expensive and take longer to install. And they will be using 12 passenger vehicles in the future. A model 3 uses 250 Wh/mile. A human adult walking uses 100 Wh/mi. Carpooling in a model 3 is already more efficient than walking.
      The idea of having pods going around the city to dozens of stations faster than the busses can above ground is already their expansion plan.

      @@GloveSlapnz I agree, and the best way to make room for walking and biking on the surface is to move all the motor vehicles underground.
      Also, in the case of the Convention Center, the visitors are already exhausted from walking around the convention all day, and they have busy schedules that often would benefit from not needing 15-20 minutes to traverse the complex.
      Additionally, stress, and snacking, from sitting in traffic is one of the main factors driving America's obesity problem. If the Loop can wipe that out we may see a net improvement in the obesity situation.

    They need safety exits in that thing or they are begging for a disaster.

      Its much worse than that. They would also need ventilation to suck the smoke out, and walkways along the tunnel's entire length, and visual markers helping in case the tunnel is filled with smoke - you know, like all state-of-the-art road or rail tunnels. But TBC saved costs because by leaving _all_ of the safety features away, they could build tunnels with much smaller cross sections.
      The Vegas Loop is a death trap, the crash of a single Tesla (and Teslas can burn, oh boy) would kill everyone in all the cars inside the tunnels, not just those in the crashed car. TBC isn't the only criminally negligent player here, this should never have gotten an approval from authorities.

    Elon promised us a world class transportation system with Autonomous cars and no traffic. 5 years later we have a tunnel with a car going thru it slower then an average subway. Elon I am dissiponted.

      It's time more people woke up and realized what a scam artist Musk is. He is the same as Elisabeth Holmes, but lucky that two of his projects somewhat work. But then again, electric cars weren't a new invention and neither were rockets. Battery technology was rapidly developing even without Musk, so he got into it in a good time. His spacex is just a transport company for NASA and people who want to sent satalites up. Must greatest achievement was to get people to shove a shitton of money up his ass. Money that allowd him to hire people who could do some of his bidding. If he had started with Neuralink or the Hyperloop, he would have failed and be revealed as the same kind of scam artist as Elisabeth Holmes. Let us see how long he'll be able to keep it up.

    We need mass transit. Not private car ownership. After spending few years in Tokyo I realized how impractical American cities are. And car centrism has so many knock on negative societal effects (isolation, inequality, public health, pollution).
    These tunnels are only going to help if they are filled with electric busses. Not a few rich people in their model S.

      @@mozartvevo9577 I guess his point is that the Tokyo metro system transports billions of people a year, and these cars will be limited to a few thousands. Having used the Tokyo metro system myself, I can say it’s extremely well thought out, cheap and comfortable to use.

    Continued investment and support for public transit should be prioritized, along with zoning reform to increase density.

      The tunnels aren't the problem. The point of "The Boring Company" is to bore faster and cheaper. The system they propose to move people is the problem. It's not efficient, but I'm sure it gets the job done in situations where a subway would be too much.

    I'm not even claustrophobic and that tunnel gives me anxiety. If something goes wrong, you couldn't even get out of the car.

    The first "traffic jam" in the tunnel occurred during CES this past week. This novelty, like many others, will likely remain simply a Vegas attraction. The feasibility of it handling a large volume of traffic within such a confined area of operation is simply impossible. Fast forward to 5 years from now and let's assume the COMPLETE system is in place to service all of the presently-scheduled locations. 10 planes just disembarked 2,000 people of which 90% are headed to the Strip or Downtown. How many Tesla's are they going to pile into with their luggage so as to be "whisked away" to their destinations? Now consider this scenario represents merely 1/2 of the ACTUAL average hourly volume of travelers at McCarren Int'l Airport, 24 hrs. per day, 365 days per year. Since we are in the desert and this desert is noted for its flash floods... are we going to trust the likes of _Elon Musk_ to install and maintain a reliable and sufficient-capacity sump-pump system? What's happening with how that managed to get built and approved to operate is incomprehensible. In the past people would have understood the problems without having to have a 4th-grade-level rundown, and they would've correctly seen the promoter as a grifter who was unconcerned about whether his approach to engineering (make all the trusting users your guinea pigs for safety testing) was acceptable. And that question is Not just for him to decide, or at least it didn't use to be. But you know what, it's Nevada, maybe it _is_ just all pay-to-play. If that's what people like then we can set aside "reservations" for them to live on where their decisions won't mean life-or-death for the rest of us.

    "The loop" is the same attitude, as widening freeways to easy congestion.
    It doesn't work.
    I highly doubt that the cost to benefit ratio will be great.
    It will probably be between a Heavy Rail and Lightrail in construction cost, but having the capacity of a cab.
    I assume in a few years the loop under the convention center will be converted into a people mover, build to perfectly fit into the tunnel

      Escape doors.
      Escape signal lights.
      Additional space/line for fire emergency to enter.
      Nothing. I mean nothing is here.
      You gonna have to run in the worst case scenario, half a mile inside a small tunnel, over teslas, with smoke, and probably some doors still open so you can't sprint your way out, not mentioning the dozens of people that also want to get out. One big guy got stuck everyone suffocate.
      I don't see that one fire extinguisher in the beginning as enough. So I wait for you to explain how elon managed to make it fire proof?

      "But planning files reviewed by TechCrunch seem to show that the Loop system will not be able to move anywhere near the number of people LVCC wants, and that TBC agreed to.
      Fire regulations peg the occupant capacity in the load and unload zones of one of the Loop’s three stations at just 800 passengers an hour.       @@Global_Optimization the problem is not the loop, it's the car. The density is just not there. A car fits 5 people at most, in a train or a bus these 5 people could fit on a square meter. Also I'm quite sceptical about these kind of loop crush load capability. Say what happen when it's working on a condition like in Tokyo or Beijing rush hour for example? Can it loads and unloads thousands of passengers on a single platform in seconds?

      @@UltimateAlgorithm Maximum throughput is determined by number of passengers per vehicle divided by seconds of headway between consecutive vehicles. Trains and busses are much worse on headway, with at least 90 seconds minimum between trains and usually 2 minutes minimum for busses.
      So if you have 5 passengers per vehicle and 1 second headway for example, that's 18,000 passengers per hour. With 12-pax vehicles and with shorter headway from autonomy of let's say 0.5 seconds, that's 86,000 per hour which is better than any train. Additionally, this is so much cheaper than trains that they can build 3-4 parallel tunnels for the same price.
      Essentially, it's not about the density of passengers in the vehicles, but rather it's about the density of passengers in the entire roadway. The massive empty space between trains outweighs the extra density in trains themselves, as it turns out.

    I cant see the advantage of such a loop. Yeah its maybe cheaper to build, because you have a smaller tunnel. But transporting people in cars seems to be really inefficent. Even if they are electric. A rail based system would allow more people more efficiently and faster to move... well thats a subway. The first idea of elon looked something like a rail based system. And yeah if you can get a pod for maybe 15 people that would be a compromise between efficiency and comfort. But that vision is miles away from what they actually build.

      when they build a "city loop" it will be an array of tunnels say 3 x 3 that have branching arms to go to each end location, and instead of being a point to point system like a rail system it will be multi-point to multi-point on demand instead of sequential stops like a train or bus, that is the complete vision anyway that they are working towards
      you cannot judge each step taken towards their vision as if it were the final vision

Maybe one of them would fit better, but I don't know the area so I cant jugde. And your second point: Yeah thats true you can move between many points, but still, it doesn't seem to be efficent. Well they drive on demand and not nearly empty like a bus or a train at a certain time. But point to point seems to be inefficent on large scales. But again I'm no expert, maybe there is something I missed. Sure it cant be the final vision. Engineering takes time. I hope it can be what they envisioned but a bit of criticism is not bad.

    The advantage of a car is that, terrain permitting, it can go pretty much anywhere. Left, right, uphill, downhill etc. Put it in a tunnel and that versatility is instantly rendered redundant. The car is a 'prisoner' of the tunnel, so why use a car ? Almost anything else is better. This is an expensive and fairly ridiculous advert for Tesla that I suspect may 'backfire' badly !

    Dont want to rain on the parade of this awesome system (irony), but in 1975 Siemens built overhead railway systems on their factory ground that were electric and are today connecting parts of the University of Düsseldorf without having the need of a driver. That is nearly 50 years ago. Today, in Las Vegas a company digs a tunnel and puts cars inside it. Brilliant.

    The current system doesn’t have enough capacity with ordinary cars to justify the cost of the tunnel. The low speed is no doubt for safety.
    They promised 4,000 passengers per hour. They will be lucky to get half that.
    Let’s see it work under real conditions. Don’t hold your breath.

      TBC/Tesla seems to be insisting on developing its own autonomous-mini-bus but this is years away. IMO they should use some from other OEMs that are already in use. They aren't high speed but they will give the system more capacity.

Putting in autonomous driving in such a situation makes little sense, as most of the time would involve entering and exiting the station, waiting on a car to arrive, entry and exit, and so on.
      Also, there is little reason to assume that autonomous driving would improve the speed of a system. The safe throughput of a road is directly reversely proportional to the speed, as braking distance is proportional to the square of the velocity. If the car in front of you stops suddenly, not artificial intelligence can slow the car faster than its maximum braking distance. There is no way for multiple vehicles to drive bumper-to-bumper at high speeds safely. There is always a chance that one of the vehicles will lose control, creating a pile up.
      Well, you could connect multiple cars together, and interlock their wheels to the road, so that it would be nearly impossible to the driver to crash into the wall, but that would be a train, and make too much sense.

      Elon Musk doesn't understand basic math. No matter how fast the cars go 35mph, 55 or the speed of light. If it takes a minute to load and a minute to unload you're stuck with only being able to transfer that amount of people a day. Replace a 4 passenger Tesla with an 8 passenger SUV and you double your number. Replace an 8 person SUV with a 16 passenger bus and so on. This is such a joke. Uber will still dominate the mode of transportation to the Convention Center

      The cars are just convenient because they already exist, the innovative part of the idea (not mentioned) is to have many low capacity pods that exit the tunnel at each stop, freeing up the tunnel to through traffic. So where a rider on a subway or bus has to stop at each stop along the route, a rider on a loop system travels direct to their destination. Obviously they’ve got a long way to go.

    In Europe we call this transport system "Metro". There are only a few differences: Several cars are attached to each other and there is only one drive unit and one driver at the front. But if someone wants to try a Tesla for small money, using the loop will be a good thing. 😂

      I don't buy this idea either, but are you joking about him not advancing us into the future?
      Just to name a few ways he is helping us to advance into the future:
      1. Developed future payment systems with PayPal,
      2. Arm wrestled the entire oil, the car industry and biased media and won - forcing transition into EVs
      3. Greatly advanced space exploration and uncountable related businesses
      ...and so much more

      @@Boonorp the 1, is complicated, you could easily argue he wasn't fundamental in PayPal, and for like the whole developing world, PayPal is still not used almost at all.
      2. Electric vehicles were already a thing and batteries were having good improvements. TESLA did help make electric vehicles "cool", but even then he is not even an original founder of it.
      3. Whilst space X has donde good improvements in Space exploration, you could easily argue that we were stuck simply because the USA had more interest in buying big fucking weapons instead of big fucking rockets, considering that now part of the budget for NASA is going to a private company, I don't think is a good long term solution and it sets history for some concerning trends of companies trying to own space

    They should just add stops to the big roller coaster the have on the strip, winding around and through all the buildings. Connected to the stratosphere at the top of the tower thing, thats where it will come back to the start

    lad here in Liverpool we have the Queensway tunnel which is far more advance that this it even has emergency exits and massive ventilation towers!!!

      yes cram all the rich dudes down there and hope there's not a battery fire . I know a few rich folks and they say its a tawdry slumville for starters . Who wants a driver been driving 30mph all day in a shitty tunnel driving him mad ..one will crack up i bet ..be known as the hyperloop driving syndrome where you uncontrollably destroy anything with an E , M or X on it .

    Just put the tracks for a mini train in there. You know, the kind an amusement park that can't afford any real rides has. It would still be an improvement over the current system.
    Even better, make it a Thomas the Tank Engine style fake steam locomotive, but with Elon Musk's face.

    The only reason for this to be considered by the dudes from Vegas that I could think of is probably to attract more people for tourism rather than a sensible way to transfer commuters. It's more of like "oh look, Tesla loops! might try myself one of those to support our overlord". I find it really baffling that they'd do anything to avoid building any up-to-date rail infrastructure, like man, it's perfect for your nation to have trains go across country, why not build those instead of a glorified tunnel?
    I think this is one of those things that you'd only see in those 1920's-esque World Science Exhibition Fair Convention thingy where it'll go badly or some stuff.

    This is not similar in any way to existing systems in other cities. It's like a metro system, except with 1% of the capacity, is more expensive to operate and is more dangerous. Elon Musk is quite the stable genius.

    Should have put that money in the monorail. One of the great failings of transit systems is having to switch between systems. Each transfer makes people less likely to use it. But again this is the city that has a TV roof on a street. So maybe Vegas is perfect for it. Can’t see it in LA though.

      But monorails are crap too,they cannot integrate with existing rail systems and monorail track switching is stupid expensive.

      @@MyKharli Monorails are crap when they’re single line, but urban monorails that have a double line can do the same job as an elevated subway, like the ones in Tokyo and Sao Paolo, and of course China’s monorails.

    Im generally all for elons crazy ideas, but this doesn't make sense at all. What is it really accomplishing? How is a single lane tunnel suppose to solve the congestion above? Seems just like another attraction which in Vegas is fine. In a city like Vegas, would've made more sense to expand the mono rail so people can have the views the city has to offer. To decrease congestion they could have made an underground highway, buss network or heck even a futuristic elon influenced subway system If they didn't want to go the monorail route

      "How is a single lane tunnel suppose to solve the congestion above?" as the loop is for the convention center it is not, the video has misrepresented the convention center transport system, it is to reduce foot traffic and speed moving around the campus for as low cost and quickly as possible, which it has achieved those goals
      when\if they build the full city loop it will most likely\eventually be an array of tunnels say 3x3 or 2x2 and be a rapid multi-point to multi-point transport system

    Biggest advantage that is missed in this video is the significant cost reduction of the boring company’s drilling versus conventional drilling

      ...that is only due to its reduced diameter. Can't use it for anything else than Tesla tunnels : subways, trains, highways, etc.
      Also, not digging a 3rd tunnel for safety and utilities may be more economical, but might one day become a huuuuuuge and deadly flaw.
