    In today's video I want to show you some first steps with what I'm calling **hybrid fingerstyle**. This is an informal term I'm using to describe a combination of Travis-style fingerpikcing (pinched strings, melody notes) with a percussive back-beat strum... all played without a pick!
    This is quite tricky to get the hang of, but can prove incredibly rewarding once mastered. In this lesson, I'll break down the essential techniques needed - and then walk you through a handful of exercises that put this into practical action. Let's get into it
    - 0:00 Overview
    - 1:23 The Fundamentals
    - 3:38 Exercise 1
    - 5:06 Exercise 2A
    - 6:19 Exercise 2B

    Thanks. Great lesson. That's what I've been practicing. I like the percussion sound. A lot like John mayer style. Keep up the awesome work.

    I love this idea, but now I have to find how to figure out melodies to play with this style. I play mostly the older Country songs and I'm at a loss how to incorporate this hybrid style into the songs I want to play.

    Really interesting lesson, thank you. Do you use the index finger only for GBE here because it's mechanically easier to do with the strum, or is it just personal preference? I am having trouble with breaking the habit of using the middle and ring too.

    • @dimwitsadvocate6264
      @dimwitsadvocate6264 2 месяца назад

      At this point, I would think using your middle and ring would be fine to do, and in some cases more efficient. But I'm an amateur, so I don't know for sure.

      Taylor 310 - I believe they're discontinued for some reason! I think I talk about it here (which focuses on my GS Mini, though I talk about the 310 too I think) - songnotes.net/lessons/512/

    Do you find it easier to use just your index finger for the picking part opposed to using your, index ,ring, little finger, or index, and ring for your picking/strumming hand?

    • @songnotes
      @songnotes  6 месяцев назад +1

      I'm all about index-finger only, for better or worse. Trickier to get the hang of, but I like that the other fingers are totally out of the way. Though maybe that's me making up for 10+ years of using ALL my fingers, before discovering Travis picking.

    The perfect follow up for this lesson should be a Justin Townes Earle's song, and you know it 😊
