I bought this same bike and an XL 500S in 1979. My girlfriend and I trailered them from CA to Anchorage, AK behind the truck of the guy we were going to work for got the summer, the they went by boat to the Nushagak bay. We rode them on the beaches and across the muskeg as far as we could for the summer. When it was time to return home, it ended up being too expensive to ship them, so we flew them back to Anchorage and stayed at a friend's house while we outfitted them. We took off and went north through Denali Park, to Fairbanks and then above the Arctic circle before turning around and heading south. We traveled unpaved and logging roads as much possible, but also highways when we needed to.

Beautiful.I bought a brand new 1979 XL250s back when I was 18. Comfortable and actually looked like a motorcycle. Twin shocks, nice flat wide well padded seat, the gas tank actually looks like a motorcycle gas tank, not one of those ugly modern "pyramid" shaped gas tanks where the seat runs right up the back of the tank. YUK. They knew how to build motorcycles back then. It was so much nicer than anything you can get today. Back then they were called "dual purpose" bikes. Sadly it was Honda that started the "dual sport" thing when they came out with their short lived NX series bikes in the late '80s, and called them dual sport bikes. Now a "dual sport" bike is an MX bike with lights and no seat.

I remember a college friend had one of these in 1980. At that time I longed for an XT500, a bike I finally acquired three years later. I love the period dash on the 185. It's actually all you need. If the bike had been stored in the dark, the tyres would not have degraded and would have been useable. Great, flat bench seat. Keep it stock. It's a classic.

Interesting old Honda. I noticed it had the decompressor cable next to the exhaust valve to make kick start easy. Those can be hard to adjust correctly without access to a manual - best to go loose rather than too tight, etc. If the front forks need fixing, also check the rear shocks to make sure they are good enough to last until you can get replacements.
Those old bikes were easy on the fuel unless you tried to ride it like you stole it... A completely stupid idea because they were low powered anyway.
The bike will be good enough for an around town commute, to/from collage/Uni and a weekend get away with light camping gear and fishing gear.
On the maintenance side of things, some of those old Honda's did not have replaceable oil filters but they had a strainer wire thing and a centrifuge thingy to keep the oil clean. Check out the manual and grab some Silastic or similar because gaskets for that old old bike maybe non-existent.
