It’s been three generations and almost as many years, and not only hasn’t the notch gone away, it hasn’t gotten any narrower or shallower. Not one bit. And some people, well, they still hate its breathing guts. If you’re one of them, throw a like down below and be counted.
But, could the #iPhone12, the iPhone 13, any future iPhone really, do anything at all to lessen that pain?

I’ve hated the notch since it was first released on the iPhone X and that’s why I still have an iPhone 7. I waited so long for the launch of the iPhone 12 but the second I saw it still has the notch I wanted to scream. Apple has lost my business for another year.

I'll take Samsung's punch-hole design anyday of the week over the hideous notch on the iPhone 10s and 11s. Plus, samsung is going to put the front facing camera under the display on the S21 so you'll ever see the camera unless you break the screen while the camera itself will function perfectly fine. Samsung just does it better sometimes aswell while Apple also can do it better sometimes. I'll stick with my Note 10+ until the Fold 2 comes out. Until Apple's iOS is similar to Android I'm not touching any iPhones.

The notch is only an issue in video playback (games not so much; most games just design around the notch anyways). And even the video playback is a non issue as long as you properly employ black bars on the sides. Surprisingly, most video players don't properly do this, which is a real shame because it's easy to fix. There's no reason we shouldn't be able to enjoy full screen video playback on our iPhones while still keeping the notch hidden.

I just went from iPhone 7 to 11. The difference is huge upper and lower bands for the iPhone 7 to a wide 16:9 screen with a minor notch. It’s not like the wrap around screen is useless. It’s used for icons. The way to remove it is add narrower sensors while allowing a narrow band on top. It’s foolish to expect to the sensors to go away since FaceID is quite an excellent feature. Sometimes, technology isn’t moving fast enough although it moves quite fast.

I have a phone with one and since I don't really ever take selfies it basically stays unfolded and so I don't have a stupid camera that I never use taking up precious screen or bezel space 100% of the time, but still there when I need it, and also security-wise I know my phone camera isn't hacked because even if it was nobody would be able to see me with it folded in. You just choose to ignore avoid live with it kind of thing. A screen should be edge to edge seamlessly without hiccups interruptions bumps or scrapes. Apple or even Samsung hasn’t delivered in this area.

The only scenario where the notch can potentially be problematic, not just aesthetically but also functionally, is when you play a game that involves virtual joysticks like Fortnite, PUBG, Brawl Stars, and others. The notch becomes a dead zone where you can't move your joy stick and if you slip your thumb into that area unintentionally, it can cost you a win which is frustrating. The same problem occurs when I play on my iPhone 8 because of the thick bezels. It's partly why I stopped playing games on my phone and switched to my iPad Pro instead. Not only is the screen bigger and can play games at 120 fps, but that problem of thumb slipping off the display is nearly non-existent on an iPad. I don't necessarily need the notch to go away to enjoy playing games on my iPhone again, but I do want the notch to reduce in size. If the notch size is reduced, the "ears" of the display can be a area where my thumb can go for the joystick. I really hope the iPhone 12 gets that smaller notch, as well as the ProMotion display to get that buttery smooth gameplay in not just in my iPad Pro. iPhones have the power to play games at 120 fps, but not the display tech.

Hole punch over notch. My favorite iPhone was the iPhone 4/5 and even with the rumored iPhone 12 going back to that shape, the notch kills it for me. I won't be switching back anytime soon. Samsung's Galaxy phones are way more beautifully designed in terms of hardware.

I understand that the notch is not aesthetically pleasing, but knowing all the sophisticated technology that’s underneath it has to make it justified and feel cooler than it is . It’s all relative now cause you’ve had it a few years. If the engineers have figured out how to change it they would. But it’s always gonna be apples way. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I have never come across anyone outside the tech community who has complained about the notch. I don't notice it and also i'd prefer for it to be the same size before it goes away. The notch gives the iphone character, makes it unique and distinguishable. The shrunken notch looks too much like the one one a cheap Chinese phone.

The pop up camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro is absolutely fine, it pops up instantly without you even thinking about it and if you think about it, thousands of digital cameras have had lenses that pop out as soon as you turn the camera on, nobody critisized the camera manufactuers and said they would fail, they always work, OnePlus is being singled out for this when there is absolutely no problem with the pop up camera, it works instanly and is futuristic. The iPhone notch is completely ridiculous.

Still think they could do a periscope solution where the top center - still existing and rather sizable - bezel is transparent containing a mirror. Right behind the top edge of the screen but pointing upwards would be the sensor cluster - just peeking around the corner...

I don't think the notch is that big of a deal. However, I think the best move is a thinner continuous bezel on top with everything there. IPad Pro style. But instead of it being even bezels all around like the iPad, it can be more screen real estate on the other 3 sides.

  • @frankiexv4533

Or a hidden notch under the screen 😱. If apple manage to make the screen transparent over the notch somehow, it would be awesome to watch the notch fade/animate in and out. Maybe that’s why they are going with Oled on all the models to allow that control. Also LG already has transparent Oled tech so it’s possible.

Why isn’t anyone talking about rounded screen corners?
I’m gonna rock the SE2 until the notch goes and hopefully the corners are squared off too.
Until the tech improves, Bezels = Fully rectangular screen.
Imagine MacBooks, iMacs, TVs, Cinemas or even paper with rounded off corners. Then realise how silly it is on an iPhone.
I don’t want to lose any screen.
Fully squared off rectangular screens are the real premium.

plus, next year the Galaxy S21 will have the camera fully under the display so you wont even see a camera at all. I'll take an under display camera over punch-hole camera, and never ever pick the hideous notch of the iphone 10 and 11. Hopefully the iphone 12 gets a punch-hole so they'll finally have royal treatment like a samsung phone.

I hated the notch until I got my XR. Now it feels like where would you put the time and battery% if you didn’t have one? Worth it for FaceID. My dream pandemic phone would have FaceID and TouchID on the Apple logo. Rear fingerprint readers are great loved them on Androids. Underscreen actually made me try Apple again and FaceID. Very frustrating especially mobile payments.

I don’t like the notch but I don’t hate it. Like you said, you would think Apple would like to at least appear to be really innovating again. As opposed to the “let’s just give the masses only what we think we Have to to keep them using us”. The 1st company to come out with a non-android OS that’s Easy to use, and robust has my business, and I think a few tens of millions more. Tim Cook and everyone at 🍎 NEEDS to read “Teaching the Elephant to Dance!”
