Oh my gosh! So my dental hygienist referred me to your channel and I am SO excited that she did! I am applying to school for next fall so that I, too, can help save people's smiles! Thank you so much for your energy and super fun, informative content! SO exciting!!! :)
so happy to hear that!!! thank you for watching and wishing you the best on your DH journey! here is my video specifically for high schoolers hope this helps: teethtalkgirl.com/rdh/high-school-to-become-a-hygienist?rq=high%20school
I am about to finish my first semester of hygiene school! 🙌🏻 All of our lecture courses are online due to Covid, and we only go into the clinic 2 days a week! ✌🏻💜🦷
I will be applying to a dental hygiene program and my area and I was wondering if you could inform on how your application process went...What was your program's application requirements and how did you stand with those requirements? (GPA, prior experience etc.)
That's amazing to have that opinion. I got a Science degree and passed the dental hygiene entry exam, but l had to give up since the program was all in person 5 days a week and that would Stop me from working and got bills to pay . That's the problem with all these medical programs, since you don't make a lot 70-80 a year, they also want to keep you in depth so you don't work for the two years you are in school, then you end up still doing loans. I paid off my signs degree while I was in school because I was able to work and I have no student loans. I'm now planning on getting a bachelor's degree in business since I have my own company , but l really wanted dental hygiene because it is fun.
I currently have a bachelors degree in finance, but came to the conclusion it’s not for me. The Dental hygienist career caught my eye, but I’m unsure if I would be accepted in such a competitive program.
I will be applying to a dental hygiene program and my area and I was wondering if you could inform on how your application process went...What was your program's application requirements and how did you stand with those requirements? (GPA, prior experience etc.)
@@Tarhell4eva I had to apply to my program in January of 2020 to be admitted in August. I had several prerequisites that I had to complete or be enrolled in before I could apply. Some of those were anatomy, chemistry and a lab, composition 1 and 2, microbiology and a lab, communications, psychology, and sociology! Hope that helps! The school you are enrolled in should have something about their dental hygiene program on their website and should include info about what classes you need to take and the application process :)
@@Tarhell4eva also, I didn’t have any dental experience. It may help you out if you do though just with the material, but it won’t affect your chance of getting into the program. And I think I had to maintain a 3.0 and have C’s or higher in the prerequisites
@@sarahmontgomery6781 Thanks for your input! :) I've checked my requirements for the application but I don't feel confident that my grades are high enough to compete with other applicants. Our program is a point system just from co-requisite classes and I have averaged about a 3.3 GPA in those classes. I guess my reason for asking was because I wanted to know how well you did for you to be accepted in your program. Thanks again!! :)
@@Tarhell4eva yeah, no problem! My program has 40 seats. I’m not sure how many people applied, but I did have really good grades, so I wasn’t worried about getting in.
Did you go to community college for your associates? Does it make it harder to get accepted for a job position because someone has an associates in community college opposed to someone who goes to university?
I came across your channel today actually because I have been trying to plan my route for my dental career. I want to become a dentist, but of course I want a well paying job to help me on the way to achieving that goal. So I have been looking into becoming a dental hygienist while I work my way up, but I am still unsure how I should approach this. Do you have any tips or routes you personally think I should take? Thank you for the video! :)
I feel you. I had the same exact thought but the second I try to talk about it in college with my advisor or career counselor they started talking about how both careers are different, and just discourages me really badly😅
So you had all that coursework completed and still had to sit through another 2 years of school? I was hopeful that since im in the same boat, that i could graduate faster

Hey! First of all, thank you for making these videos, they're so helpful to people like me :) So I am a junior studying to get my Psychology Degree in a 4-year university. (this was bcs I love psychology). I was thinking about getting an associate's in dental hygiene after I graduate but my college advisor said I shouldn't bcs it's not right to go for an associate's degree after getting your bachelor's ("it is a step down" she said, mind you, she was a dental hygienist for 15 years before becoming an advisor). Since you did the same thing can you please share with me what was going on in your mind while making that decision? and was it worth it? literally, anything that helped you make this decision of becoming a hygienist? would you advise me to do the same or not?
sooo interesting!!! so, maybe it can depend on the location in which you attend school? but in my area - I had several students in DH school with me (an associates program) where we all already had our bachelors. also - once it's on your resume - I can only see the benefits of having two degrees & can't think of any negatives. but that's just my opinion! hope this helps! wishing you the best in whichever you choose!!!
ALSO I think it's great - if anyone asked why you chose DH after a bachelors in something else - you now have a good story as to finding your passion for DH!
Whitney I have a question I love your videos as always your the best. Do you have to have your Dental Hygiene Degree in order to be a dental therapist? Could you have your BS and also a RDH and then apply to be a dental therapist?
Is it normal that I get tartar build up two weeks after a dental cleaning ? I brush my teeth 3x everyday and floss and use mouthwash every day/night. ( My dentist is always pleased about that. 😊) Is it common to get tartar despite having a good oral hygiene?
hello! I would like to know that if I already got a Higher Diploma in dental hygiene and a Advanced Diploma in Dental Therapy in Hong Kong. What courses or any exams that I still need to take to become a registered dental hygienist in US? I am glad to hear your reply, thank you so much!
Hello, thanks for the video. Also, if you're taking an associate's at a community college, does that college need to be accredited by the CODA or other Dental Board for you to be accepted?
@@TeethTalk thank you! Also can I go to community college to complete my pre req in associate degree and not apply to any program, but apply when I transfer to a university for bachelor?
congrats! that is so great! and yes you can as long as you have all the prerequisites for dental school. most likely you'll need to take some additional classes during your undergrad :) hope this helps! also - always check with the admissions of your intended school for exact details!
Hi! I recently got interested in dental hygiene. I found a program that claims to be 18 months. Most school I know are at least 24 months so I don’t know if this is a shady school or not. I really don’t know much and have tried to do as much research as I could 😅
hi friend! there are definitely accelerated programs - so it is possible! my best advice would be to call the admissions and confirm it's accredited. also - I have a list of accredited DH schools on my website (updated in 2020 still waiting on 2021 so if it's new it may not yet be on the list) - hope this helps: teethtalkgirl.com/rdh

Hello! I have an unrelated bachelor’s degree and am thinking of becoming a dental hygienist. Do you think it makes more sense to get a masters or go back for associates? Would I need any prerequisites for associates or is that only for masters? I have no debt and would like to take out as minimal loans as possible.
hi friend! most RDH master programs require a dental hygiene license to apply (meaning you'd need to attend AS or BS in DH prior to applying)! always check the individual program's requirements but hope this helps!
Hello ma’am i do have a question hope you can help me🙏i am a nurse and planning to apply be a dental hygienist(associates) how long will it take me to complete the course?
