- Is Steven Seagal a martial arts fraud? Can aikido be effectively used in real life situations? This video covers the topic of Steven Seagal with special guest stars AJ Van Bakker and Mario Rose.
I discuss a real-life incident I was able to diffuse without resorting to violence; a combination of street smarts and martial arts training.

I mean I believe Seagal is a narcissist but honestly his movies in the late 80's/90's were one of the best martial arts movies ever. The speed and intensity of his action scenes still hold up today. I know he's kinda fallen off recently but I still think he was an impressive action star for his time.

I had a chance to speak with Seagal and mentioned that I had met a tea instructor during a tea ceremony at the Hakone Japanese Gardens in Los Gatos, California, who told me that her husband was his student at his Aikido Dojo in Japan in the early 70s, and I asked if he still maintained contact with any of his earlier students to which replied “I do maintain contact with many of my earlier students. I have had thousands, so I may not remember all of their names, but I love them all.” We talked about several things but I appreciated that. I will always consider him legit.
I had also mentioned growing up in Tokyo and having lived on the American Embassy compound in the district of Roppongi, in the early 70’s as a young teenager, at the same time he had his Aikido Dojo in Japan. I inquired as to if he had ever visited the compound. He replied that he did recall going there once, and was with a group that visited the Marine Guards in Tokyo and other cities in Japan. He also spoke about Tokyo being one of his “favorite places in the world.”

I’m no Seagal hater, but a lot of the angst is self inflicted. As to martial arts, whether or not you like Aikido as an effective art, Seagal is a great practitioner of it.

When I was 18 and going into the Navy, and after a bunch of Karate through my life, I felt invincible. In my mid/late 20's, getting into cage fighting/MMA..I felt invincible. Now, at 43 and a firearms instructor...I'm glad I carry a gun.. I'm not made of rubber and invincible anymore. Lol

Back in 2012, I sent Rigan Machado a personal message on youtube about Seagal. He has nothing but good things to say about Seagal.

@@Katzenhase I shared with him a video of Seagal performing a technique during a seminar. He replied that "the technique comes from sword work and Seagal is really good at the sword. He invited me and my brothers to his house once and is really knowledgeable in the Japanese martial arts".
I've asked some of the seniors at my dojo about SS. They agree that his skills are genuine. They also say that he's completely insane. Not a man to be admired in most respects, but a legitimate talent in martial arts.

Seagal was cool and unique back in the day. His theatrical releases were decent but as soon as he started putting on the weight and making poor b-movies, he's become a bit of a laughing stock unfortunately.

I believe the method of fighting in the Dark Knight Trilogy is called K.C. Fighting System. I can't remember how it's spelled but that's DEFINITELY how it's pronounced. The K and C are for the "creators" of the style. Tom Cruise also used it in Jack Reacher
i respect Steven Seagal as martial art, and love his early 90s movies... but i have more respect and love for this channel since it covers what i want to hear and know about these childhood hero's.... and more !

I really was much for Seagal at the very beginning, but with the passage of time I've come to appreciate and recognise him as the real deal. He's the real deal. He may get some dates and stuff mixed up, but I tell you this guy is not to be trifled with.

Before i start i would like to say people call themselves whatever they like when they are RUclipsrs,i don't judge that.
I will not argue about Steven Seagal be a martial artist or as actor,he has some movies i like but i will argue about what kind of person he is from all the things i know he has done and some he said.
Trashing people like Van Damme or MJW is a behaviour of an idiot and make no mistake,this will not make him superior to them,all he has is a very big mouth.
Scott Adkins is much better than both of them and he respects them,he doesn't trash them.

For him to say karate is a weak artform simply means he has weak karate
karate is great, every art that do sparring can help you to defend yourself. There are right now karate people in mma doing great.
Unfortunately the interview with this person whom ever he is, did not come across well. There are many many people who have no mastery of any martial art, they move from alleged fighting style to alleged fighting style but have no mastery of anything.
This gentleman is now a middle aged 50 - 70 lb overweight guy who trained for a short time with or under Seagal when he was a young boy. Seal is 6’4:: a 210 or 220 when he as in shape. Obviously he could control a young boy. Blowing up an oil rig and packing a cave with c4 doesn’t corroborate nonsense CIA credentials, whether or no Seagal was or was not the director of the movie. That is what consultants are hired for.
The techniques I’ve seen in his movies and in his demonstrations do not work plain and simple.not in the street or anywhere else other than the fact he is again, 6’4 and 220 or so. In a real fight street or ring he would have been badly hurt maybe killed if it went far enough against an experienced strong minimally experienced street fighter. Everything I’ve seen about him unfortunately screams mental illness.
I knew most if not all of the real Karate masters in the 1970’s and 80’s. Most not all were Koreans right off the boat, were half the size of Seagal. I can absolutely assure anyone that all of those men, with the exception of Joon Rhee who was no martial art master, would literally destroy Seagal in any sort of fight, in the ring our out. Even Peter Urban an American who brought his form of Goju to America and who had his own issues would have made mince meat of Seagal.
Seagal has a “mastery” of Aikido but the style is ineffective. His attempt to add what look like Shotokan front punches and front kicks do nothing to make it more effective. Frankly he is the Aikido version of FranK Dux with a good deal more ability and technique but he is no fighter. Making a man with obvious emotional and mental illness, who uses what looks like shoe polish for his hair color, who buys Buddhist titles, and conducts himself as some sort of bizarre mystic is not someone to emulate nor to set up as a martial arts master - he is not now and never was.
Steven is a Head Instructor in Russian Aikido Federation,he is Russian citizen,he has many seminars with special forces in Russia.And the told that his technics is great,and many elements they use in their work.
Unless you have fought Steven, you don't know whether he can fight or not.

I loved his first six movies and then I think we can all agree it went downhill fast after that. A lot of people can't separate their hatred for him, from his actual legitimacy as a martial artist. He doesn't help matters by being (largely) unlikable.
Whether or not he's a great fighter is questionable (as there's no footage of him fighting) but he's obviously highly trained in Aikido (and other arts)
and I would say that he belongs to a list of the five most famous martial artists ever.
Seagal made some great movie's in the past glimmer man under siege ect ect but what I hated about him is when he talks bad of other martial artists like van damme jai white that's the only problem with him that I don't like

Seagal is legit, he's a great ambassador for Aikido. It does seem that he's become more humble as he's gotten older. I've always been a fan, would love to have seen him do more roles in Hollywood. A rom com starring Seagal, that I would have to see. lol
If you want know more about Seagal,you need ask people,who trained with him,who was on his seminars.

Viking amigo, thank you for the video! as a martial artist I think Seagal is legit, just seeing his biography and the kind of training and where he did it speaks for itself, the issue now days is a lot of people compare everything to mma, and mma as cool as it is still a sports with rules and limitations where two opponents respect each other and they are not going to commit to an attack all crazy and wildly, street fighting and self defense in particular is quiet different in a sense that a mugger will see you as a victim, and will commit into your space (face to face, hand or finger in your face, or even attacking wildly) and that's where all these are like traditional karate, Krav maga, and to some degree aikido( if you add other arts like Seagal did) can be useful and practical to survive. Salute from South Florida man!

Segal has never competed or even released a live sparring video....so it's impossible to comment on his effectiveness based on his fighting skills.

About competitions,you must understand that all them have many rules,and in real life no unlegit techniques,you can you can hit in the eyes, in the throat, in the groin, on the head, break your fingers, choke until your opponent dies, etc.
@@user-si5jg5bd4c yes it's true completion is not a total simulation of real life conflict. Real life conflict Can include eye pokes, molotov cocktail, and a mob jumping one guy. All of these are effective.
However competition has the value of a resistant opponent albeit within a rule. Eye pokes and groin hits may not be with rules but many other violent forms of resistance can be included, I. e. counter punching, sprawling, and reversing lock .This is at least a glimpse of how that skill set may work in real life with someone resisting.
Guys like segal have demos and katas which are impressive choreographies but it is unclear how effective it would be against someone resisting.

Seagal can handle himself in a real fight. He's been doing martial arts for 50 years.
The biggest fight in history would have been Steven Seagal vs Frank Dux. It's not too late, it's still possible. With George Dillman vs Ashida Kim on the undercard. Please, take my money. And Mario Rose also deserves to be on the card as it seems.

IMHO, the dismissal of Seagal's martial arts pedigree isn't due to the fact that people actually believe he's a fraud but rather his deeming of others (i.e. Chuck Norris, Dolph Lundgren etc.) as not real martial artists and phonies. Had has approach been more humble (like he was in the more recent Scott Adkins interview), more people would be receptive to him.

Once again I really enjoyed this video and the story of Steven Seagal being a bodyguard is mind blowing, I'm not sure if Steven Seagal HATERS realise what that means, Bodyguard has a serious responsibility like protecting an important person for example the president, celebrity etc. If Steven was a bodyguard in real life he knew how to use weapons obviously like disarming knives which goes back to his Aikido it's not just breaking wrists people Steven has more skills then haters realise.
A celebrity bodyguard could be a thug built like a tank with no to minimal combat experience. If you look the part, most people are not going to mess with the principal client. Steven Seagal's bodyguard clients' would have been celebrities. I believe he was once the bodyguard to his ex-wife Kelly LeBrock. High profile politicians are protected by members of Law Enforcement or the military. They are the real deal.
The only thing he could have protected was his lunch. That's why he has always has his knife. I wonder where the hides the spoon...

Hey dude I really like your nickname The Viking Samurai ,I think it's a cool name , I've over 40 years of experience in martial arts ( various styles) fitness and endurance sports, I do a lot of marathons and Triathlons, I once ran 50 miles non stop. I'm 62 and I still lift 4 times a week and I'm natural never taken any substances. Anyways I just wanted to tell you martial arts and fitness kept me out of trouble as a kid , it kept me out of gangs and from drugs -- there's no better high then working out , something I'll do for the rest of my life. Seagal shihan isn't just an Aikido master. He's a mixed martial artists and what you're seeing in his first four action movies isn't orthodox aikido.
What you see in his first four action films is a mixed martial art he created , with an Aikido base, by combining traditional Kara Te, Koryu Jujutsu, Daito Ryu, Wing Tsun, Jo-do, Katanajutsu , FMA and Aikido. His personal hybrid style is called Tenshin Gakuen Bugei Ryu.
He's also an accomplished competitive firearm shooting champion.
And he went through police S.W.A.T. training in Louisiana & Arizona.
He was a celebrity bodyguard in Japan and United States.
The dialect of Japanese which he speaks, reads and writes is actually an older, very formal, dialect that many younger Japanese no longer speak but the older generation speak it.
He's an ordained priest in the Omoto Kyo sect of Shinto which Morihei Ueshiba was a priest in.
He's ordained as a priest in Tibetan Buddhism.
He speaks a little Spanish and Russian.
He owns very large lavender farms which produce lavender oil.
He owns martial Arts schools, owns the world's largest collection of antique samurai swords , is a gunsmith, is a Japanese calligrapher, professional blues guitarist and He's an accomplished writer, producer, director, fight coordinator and actor.
He's also an outspoken conservative with strong right wing politics so he's very much hated by Hollywood.
His derogatory comments about other Hollywood action stars with competitive fighting backgrounds earned him hate.
And his support of Trump put the nail in his coffin with Hollyweird.
Meanwhile celebrity pedophiles like Roman Polansky, Quentin Tarantino, Charley Sheen, Joe Biden are still adored by Hollyweird community.
It has become popular to hate on Seagal. That’s why so many people do it and his attitude does not help the situation. However that does not negate any skill he has. It just makes people dislike him more.
it looks to me, that Seagal in a real life situation would be using karate. Seriously, he is a humungous guy with a legit blackbelt in shotokan . He likes the mae geri. and his range is insane.
Not Shotokan... Seagal trained moreso in the Okinawan Karate arts. He has some serious hand conditioning from decades of Makiwara work. He also has trained together with Sifu Samuel Kwok and Tetsuhiro Hokama sensei.

I think the big problem with Aikido is that Seagal brought a lot of attention to the discipline, and there’s many more traditional Dojos that have gotten very soft and almost ballet like. This gives it a less than favorable world view in the martial arts community. There are some more modern ones that haven’t gotten the same kind of attention that the more traditional ones. These Dojos have reintroduced some of the Jiu Jitsu and or other martial arts disciplines that were originally used to develop Aikido.

If Sammo Hung is legit so is Seagal. Being over weight does not always mean you don't have skill.
Differece is, Hung is still brilliant and athletic. Seagal can hardly move.
One of the stars who largely predated the internet era. It was still possible to get away with a lot of mysticism back in those days similar to pro-wrestling or magic. Nowadays the world is smaller, you can contact celebrities on the other side of the world with a click of your finger and combat sports have come a long way. Sports science has improved as well. I think that a gracious way of looking at stars from that by-gone era is they had confidence and they allowed other people to boost their reputation for them as well; they embellished a lot but always had enough street credibility to make you suspend disbelief for a bit. Andre the Giant was not nearly as big as he was made out to be and Ken Shamrock in pro-wrestling was not the 'world's most dangerous man' for real. I saw an interview of Sting, Steve Borden where the interviewer overestimates his size and Sting just smiles and nods instead of correcting him; Sting did not really lie at all, he just allowed the interviewer to keep believing whatever Sting was billed as in his prime and similarly in his day it was not Seagal telling you how amazing he is but his promoters trying to sell him as a legit fighter to make the movies more succesful and ultimately make money. 'Kayfabe' has been destroyed. Undertaker's tombstone move is not very practical in real life but he could force it on someone smaller than him and aikido wrist twisting does not work on men your own size; according to legend, pro-wrestler Curt Hennig easily broke out of a hold that Seagal tried to put on him many moons ago. People like Jason Statham and the like who have the right facial looks, voice and can be taught to move a certain way will carry on the tradition of acting hard on camera but kids will not be growing up looking up to them like they did in the pre-internet era.
No one really criticizes Seagals early films, they were great for their time, introducing on screen fighting differently. His films are up there as Martial Arts classics of the 90s.
Seagals only downfall is that his been his low quality films that he's done for the past few years. They've been pretty bad or just average. He uses stunt doubles involving anything requiring athleticism. He's just got old, and hasn't done it gracefully. So he's an easy target, his egocentricism hasn't helped either. Best way to take Seagal, just watch his old films, they're still great now.
I was watching another RUclips channel where the host said that he started training Shotokan karates a kid along with a friend of his. And he said that he and his friend at a certain point came to the realization that “this doesn’t work in real life.” However they both came to different conclusions, the host said that he decided to leave karate and began training in boxing, catch wrestling the other grappling arts. Whereas his friend concluded that “this doesn’t work, how can I make it work?” Instead of abandoning the art, expand upon the art itself, and strengthen its weaknesses. Philip and Simon Rhee have done this with their Tae Kwon Do, can Akido work? Some say yes, some say no, I say learn to make it work!
I agree. No martialarts work for every kind of person meaning ultimately no one is officially superior to the other. There are always going to be adaptations in art style for the most skilled and things will always work from different styles for inderviduals learning and looking for true expression.

@@robertnguyen9493 I say martialarts do not make good fighters, they just make better fighters. A 3rd dan kempo guy i know froze at a knifepoint robbery. Me, before any martialarts training have faced off against big numbers by myself despite only being 5'6 and 9.5st and come out victorious. Without disipline skills cannot be gained but without heart battles cannot be won. I said no martial art is superior over another, that is because it is the skill level of the competitors that make the real difference.

Hitting the balls is effective. Speaking from personal experience. Seagal may have been holding back, or lebell was just that tough. But a tap to the balls can put someone into serious pain.

He trained karate as a teenager under Fumio Demura. Before he went to Japan. He trained Wing Chun,under Samuel Kwok. FMA under Daniel Inosanto. Seagal shihan holds rank in a Koryu Jujutsu, Kenjutsu, Jodo and is a shihan in Aikido. He's also trained in Daito Ryu in Japan and Small Circle Jujutsu with Wally Jay in Hawai'i.
He mixes his training together and created his own MMA for self defense. It's not really Aikido and he's far more than an aikido guy.
Please stop saying he's only an aikido guy. It's like saying Lyoto Machida is only a karate guy when he's trained numerous arts.
Alot of hurt souls are bitter they invested time & money into training aikido and didn't learn to fight like Seagal Shihan so they call him a fake. But they're ignorant to the fact that Seagal Shihan taught Aikido but his personal practice was an ecclectic blend of all the arts he holds rank in and cross trains in.
Ive studied traditional Japanese karate for 35 yrs. Tbh ive noticed if it isnt bjj or muay thai ppl are bad mouthing it and disputing its effectiveness
Right? It's like the entire history of martial arts didn't exist before the mid 90's and people just walked around helpless. Many reading this likely had a grandfather who fought in WW2 who was considerably more dangerous than the majority of gym rats walking around today.

I took kickboxing because of my personal hero Jean Claude Van Damme. On a personal note I never liked Steven Seagal as an actor. I think he only plays versions of himself in his movies. I know he studied and practiced but I honestly don't think he's ever been pushed to his actual limit in a very long time. I honestly think that that unchallenged arrogance drove a talented martial artist insane. That and a coke addiction.
He has size. If he meets someone smaller that can't fight, he'll be fine.
he's applied techniques in front of skilled fighters and they showed him respect.

I thought we just learned on this channel not long ago that Lebell didn’t choke out Seagal? He hit Lebell in the groin, Lebell let go of the choke and swept his legs, and that was it according to the fight coordinator who witnessed it. Are we back to the choke out story?
Technically segal won the fight.

Might've already been stated here, but technically Putin is listed as being a *Judo* black belt (not Aikido, from what I can find) as well as training in Kyokushin and Sambo. Not a big deal, just wanted to add some trivia at least.
Add Krav Maga to the list, yeah. He was pretty sturdy when he was our boss, me being a foreigner in the Spetznas, something rare, but the need for 'agents' abroad was always important, same goes for CIA, however, Steven Seagull was never in any type of special forces... maybe in the movies. Putin is a formidable opponent and I'd been glad if I got as far as he did in the certain fighting styles. I ended up doing LWS and C.I stuff and got canned when I got cancer roughly 3 years ago.

If I get into those arts it'll be for the street application.......why in the hell would anybody get into any martial art if it's only useful when competing......it's meant for self defense, NOT to harm anyone, to initiate fighting but to defend yourself when attacked or bullied!

Really appreciate these guys being open minded. While I'm not a big fan of aikido, I don't agree bashing anyone for their choice of martial arts. I also learned a lot about Steven seagal that I didn't know before. However, we all know that the most badass and pretty much invincible martial arts form is ameri do te.

Even though I recently started following your channel I can tell by the way you express yourself about the arts and other martial artist. In regards to Steven Seagal I don't knock his skills. I wouldn't want to get in a brawl with him.

Seagal's first 5 movies are classics! Add to that The Glimmer Man, Executive Decision and Exit Wounds.
Everyone should check out Scott Adkins interview with him where he talks about how the Aikido he learned was the pre-war Aiki-Jutsu that is more street-applicable than most of the Aikido being taught today.
What Seagal does have goin for him above all the other action stars... he somehow got Kelly LeBrock to marry him. Kudos sir. Kudos
The actual training of the martial arts is as you said is not to fight unless you have to but is to avoid the fight when possible, I have some stories about avoiding fights that I have used and I can also say that each martial art has certain things that work in the streets and other things that don’t. I have even used a hip block on a number of people who said they were advanced martial artists and all that happened was all of them were injured so they weren’t walking good after they tried to kick and all I did was my hip block. So you just need to look at what the attack is as with the defense and realize that the biggest factor is not the martial art but the practitioner that is the key and the training is to the point that you don’t think, you just do.

I have been training since the age of 5 and have studied: Judo, Kung Fu, Aikido, Ju Jutsu, Ninpo Tai Jutsu, Karate and Krav Maga.
I've trained my kids since birth... I guess I could call them Viking Dragons :-)

He's a fraud since he presents himself as Many Many things he is not. He has been called out numerous times on making up things, hurting people, abusing or exploiting them, etc etc. If he presented himself purely as what he was and nothing else then no he wouldn't be a fraud, but he is. I grew up during that era and never got why people liked him. His acting was bad and was the least interesting on camera martial artist of the era IMHO (that comes down to purely opinion of course). Honestly I think defending Steven Seagal insults other martial artists (actors or not) that don't misrepresent themselves. The beginning clip is pure BS IMHO. It presents the problem with Steven Seagal as a whole... presenting that being an action star martial artist is the reason he's constantly mocked and insulted. It's not. Sure any actor or famous person of anything will get negative attention, but many of the other action stars of that era are riding high these days and never were hammered like Seagal was. His negative attention was purely of his own accord and nothing to do with being a martial artist but purely everything to do with being Steven Seagal. He created his own problems, don't pass that problem on to the rest of the Martial Arts world.

The Hakama thing is not necessarily true. Some styles train exclusively wearing them regardless of rank (Chendokan Akido which happens to be the style I’ve trained in for example asked you to wear them if you could afford it), and some don’t wear them at all during training (Shodokan Aikido for example).
