I have learned you never disrespect another martial artist whether you like them whether you hate them whether you agree with that they're saying with what they're teaching.. never disrespect them.. that breaks the code that we all live by as a real martial artist...
    I don't care what Steven seagal has done in his lifetime.. I don't care if he has six different women accusing him of raping them or assaulting them.. I'm sticking by the martial arts aspect of Steven seagal and I do trust him. so when it comes to martial arts I believe in him I believe in the martial arts code and I live by it every single day so yes I do respect Steven seagal and I understand aikido and I thank him..
    a lot of people don't understand the martial arts form... they don't know anything about martial arts and they should give it a try and really truly believe and understand what martial arts can do for people and what the history is of it.....

    I had a chance to train Seagal in a seminar in the 90's and it was 250 dollars at that time which was a lot of money at that time, so I skipped it. My Filipino Pangamot teacher met Seagal at a martial arts event, kind of like Dragonfest, and he said he is a real nice person. He gave my teacher a compliment about Pangamot then went his way.

    Seagal also inspired me. I started my martial arts journey when I was about 11 years old, when I read a book called "Judo Boy," wherein the protagonist's friend shocked everyone in a street fight by using a little-known martial art called Aikido; this revelation of a relatively unknown martial art prompted me to investigate it. Many years later, when I was already a Nidan in Shudokan karate, and having first been belted in judo, I decided to undertake Aikido. I had never seen Aikido utilized in an actual fight scenario, until Seagal came onto the scene. In the first movie I saw him practice Aikido techniques, I immediately knew that those techniques were legit.

    Seagal is one of my all time favourite,just right after Bruce Lee. The trash talking people never tested his skills,when he was 30 years younger.His skills are awesome,and he is fast as hell still to this day. Maybe he sounds arrogant sometimes, but he is a great martial artist.It's easy to jump on the hate train for the younger generations.I will always respect Seagal.This is a great interview,much appreciate it, the internet needs to see Seagal's good side.Ten toes down!

    My problem with Seagal is all his boasting. When Brandon Lee died, Seagal hung outside the Lee family home. He talked to reporters and claimed that he and Brandon were good friends and hung out all the time. When Brandon's mom was asked about it, she said that she barely remembers Seagal at all. I would need to find the report again. I believe she said that she only knew of Seagal from various events and not from close family interactions.
    I would not use comments from a Gracie about how good someone is. Watch interviews with guys who went to the first few UFC(?) fights the Gracie's sponsored. Everyone was told that everything was legal in regards to fighting styles, clothes, and more. A guy did a lot of wrestling in his fighting. At the prefight meetings, guys were told that they were not allowed to wear their wrestling shoes as they were weapons. Gracie is allowed to wear his gi and belt. Gracie then used them to choke other fighters. There are multiple videos of the guys who showed up and at the last minute something came up to hamper their fighting.

Not only is that black belt in Kyokushin, one of the most physically rigorous styles of of Karate where they slam eachother with kicks and punches till the other yields. But that he is a 7th Dan, a rank equal to his rank in Aikido and is any incredibly hard rank to achieve. All while no footage exists, while his Aikido career is heavily documented. 2:25 even in the example of Segal's humility, he still feels the need to humble brag, starting off with "Many people consider me one of the great Masters..."
    2:56 "when I punch towards Steven Seagal when he's going to do a technique on me, it feels like I'm punching air" sounds like what compliant or overly respectful students do, "punch towards" is not the same as "try to punch", for instance, I don't try to punch my 11 year old son in the head when we're sparring, I punch towards him & pull my body shots so he can practice his techniques without fear of getting hurt.
    There are a lot of carefully selected words in this video, Rickson Gracie said "Based on his training, based on his understanding, he has a deep understanding of the concepts & his philosophy is also based on proving realities" but the unedited quote is quite different. I think people judge Seagal's martial arts to functional martial arts they see in the MMA. Training with Steven Seagal compared to training with the Machido Brothers is apple's and Oranges because they all take different approaches in martial arts. Tai Chi will be different than American Karate because Tai Chi is a spiritual approach where American Karate takes more of the competition stuff.
    To get back to Seagal, people view his version of Aikido to his movie status. It makes sense because if 4 of his first films were hits and he does Under Siege in 1991, they view Aikido in a bad light because Steven Seagal's movie decline. They try to compare him to Dwayne Johnson who was a pro wrestler most of most his career. Dwayne Johnson is a brand in itself, Aikido isn't pro-wrestling, MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it's a mystical martial arts more than functional.
    To get back to Seagal's films, after Under Siege, he utilize more creative control in his movies portraying himself as a spiritual monk. In all his movies, he even performed Aikido with less lethal violence in the movie.

  • @aikidoboynj
    @aikidoboynj 3 года назад +4

    I think and have always thought Seagal was legit, I loved his early movies, some of his later movies were ok to me, (after 2000 though I can't watch them DTV movies they're abysmal).
    I think where Seagal went sideways with the masses was that he didn't dedicate himself to keeping himself in better shape.
    Not that he had to be a muscle head like the others but just more svelte like in the early 90s. We just don't picture someone over weight being able to fight. Also if you notice in his movies, the heavier he he got the worse the action scenes became and the more awkward looking the outfits became.
    It was not a good look for an action hero, especially from being slender and fast to the opposite in just a few years. I've spared with very heavy people in the past and I've also held pads and bags for them and it's not fun getting hit. Obviously in sparring sessions I tried to just hit and run because after feeling a round house or side kick once or twice you don't want that shit again even in a practice setting but it still goes against human nature to see someone very over weight or out of shape as a threat or someone who can teach others about martial arts. It's like a personal trainer who is 400 pounds, you have to wonder a little!
