Seagal has a number of top level students that all have a very strong reputation for practical street effective Aikido as well. Shows that he was a very good teacher. Larry Reynosa, Haruo Matsuoka, Ralph Angulo (Lenny Sly's teacher), Jaime Calderon, Gerrit Green, Craig Dunn, all came from Seagal lineage and all of them are now skilled masters in their own right.
Look up Seagal and Larry Reynosa Randori testing and see how much more ruthless and brutal it is compared to 90 percent of other Aikido branches out there.

As a former practitioner of TKD and an art that I began my martial art journey, you don't want to jump around in the streets for one, you will get tired. As an old saying goes, don't fight their fight. Plus, the front kick entry, you want to lock the leg which is a similarity of gedan barai variation (Down block with a scoop) and strike him to the face like you said VK. Hit him and leave, don't get into the ground game. As for the makiwara, Its a useful tool which we practice in my teachers dojo, but a good tool to work on your fist position and body mechanics. Part 2 of your video is solid VK and Seagal is a legit martial artist.

I think that Mr. Seagal is a legit aikidoka. Can't tell if he is just really charismatic but watching the original videos I was pretty much feeling like he was a for real martial artist, maybe a master. When it comes to his techniques my prejudices tell me that grappling is super important, however Iv'e had judo instructors tell me you don't want to end up on the ground especially in a battlefield/group fight your dead meat. I really enjoyed seeing Steven Seagal in these videos and want more. Also good reaction vid Viking Samurai!!!

    • @johndough8115
      @johndough8115 2 года назад +1

My advice is try it. Get two or three people to attack you at the same time. Your prejudices will evaporate really quickly.
I mostly practice Wing Chun.. though Ive also cross trained in many other arts. A lot of artists think lowly of Kung Fu... and so when Id go to open house sparring events.. Id often get a lot of snickers, and outright disrespect. Well, one even was at a Jujitsu school. The students were being very disrespectful.. so I chose to use enough force in my strikes to KO. I dropped each one of their Blackbelt level fighters... one after another... from my mostly extended Lead guard hand. Less than 6" of travel, with a vertical fist to their foreheads. I used less than 20% of what I was capable of delivering, in those punches. I was also being extremely Kind.. by allowing them past my stomp kick to their kneecaps.
In real barefist combat situations... you dont have time to play around. You often have less than 1 second to dispatch an Attacker, before another attackers attack, is being launched at you.
Grappling has its uses, but.. its both the last range of combat.. as well as tends to be the most "Nice" of responses you can apply. If I can land a lethal strike from less than 8 inches of distance... Why would I bother with trying to set up, and follow through with a grappling situation? Grappling, however, is more applyable in various situations, such as if you are a Bouncer at a club (where its heavily frowned on, if not potentially illegal, to strike). Or for example... restraining a Drunken Uncle, thats gotten way out of control.
That said.. grappling can also be both devastating, and very useful in certain combat situations... such as tossing an OP into some other OPs.. to slow their advance.
Ohh, and since Ive spent some time giving advice about trying things... I also advise trying to spar someone with one arm, vs their two (excluding grappling, due to the disadvantage). Try both same-side arms.. and opposite-arm sides. Each will give you a unique experience in learning how advanced interceptions have to be applied. The extended arm, is similar to wielding a Fencing foil / Sword.
You will likely not be able to land a hit against the OP.. however.. if you know what you are doing.. you can prevent them from landing a single hit on you. This is one of the Demos I do, to show other sport artists like MMA fighters.. the differences between Combat and Sportized arts. To date.. none have been able to land a single hit on me, when doing that drill / demo.

@@thecollector6746 Ive sparred, heavy / full contact... against MMA fighter, and other Sport fighters Frequently. I used to participate in Open-House sparring events at various local schools.
I ended up getting plenty of connections from these events... and of course, one artists tends to know several other artists.. and so my Sparring Pool grew exponentially in a very short amount of time.
Eventually, I found a guy that had access to a room that had a full matted floor, and Me, Him, and maybe 15 other various martial artists of various styles.. would meet up every single weekend, to both cross train and spar. There were at least 15 artists there at any event... but on occasion, there were more.
Not only did I spar often.. But I also tended to Intentionally spar the Biggest, Strongest, and best fighters that I could find. Many of the guys I sparred, were often 2x my own mass and strength. I did this, to put my abilities to the Ultimate tests... to make sure that they would work properly, in a real Situation.
In a Barefist fight.. there are no Weight Classes. If the OP is bigger and stronger... you simply have to deal with the differences in Attributes. And if you have Never tested your skills at such a level.. you are NEVER going to be Prepared to deal with such an attacker, in a real barefist fight.
Furthermore.. the DEMOs I do with various artists.. are meant to show technical differences, without having to cause unnecessary injuries. Not only that.. but my Demos tend to be "Realistic", with proper strength and energy. Something that a lot of people do not realize.. is that for certain techs to operate Properly.. they REQUIRE the OP to put medium to heavy strength in. They Require serious Intent, and effort. Otherwise... its like trying to deal with a weak limp noodle... which does not create the proper mechanics.
An example is if a person throws a weak, non-committed punch. I could use an upwards deflection.. but if his arm is limp.. it wont effect them much. However.. if they throw a Heavy powered strike.. their body will be Unified and "Stiff"... so when my deflection occurs.. it will effect their entire body, and their stability... potentially lifting them backwards on only their heels. Similarly.. if I deflect a stiff arm horizontally.. it can cause the OPs entire torso to swing to the side... and might even cause a stability in their ground connection as well (depends on the level of stiffness, and the energy levels involved)
So, no... my Demos are not "Cooperation" nor "Hypnosis" events. I am a Combat artist, that has always sought the Highest level of TRUTH in real combat technology, and mastery. This includes hardcore training methods... such as full IRON BODY conditioning, that FAR exceeds the shallow version of shin conditioning seen in Muay Thai.
Im not one of these Weak, pansies, that operates in Fantasy. Ive trained longer and harder in a single week, than many artists train in 4 weeks. And I kept that level of training up for over 5yrs SOLID. Im talking a MINIMUM of 4hrs every day (typically a LOT more). 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

I really liked the part when Seagal talks about not bouncing. and how he moves. The Chung Do Kwan TKD school I trained at, my instructor didn't necessarily train us to bounce on our feet, but more in general not to stay still. BUT...the foot movements Seagal talked about, we trained in using those. Doing slides and skips with both the front and back foot in all four directions. The foot that is doing the skipping or sliding is barely lifted off the ground or not much in the same way Seagal moves his foot. The best example I can think of to help someone visualize it is the gym scene in The Perfect Weapon, when Jeff Speakman is fighting the first TKD guy played by James Lew. Speakman does 2 round kicks and one front kick to Lew (it could be another round kick; Here's a link to clip of that scene.
    ruclips.net/video/XNdB5BD9cMY/видео.html
It's also interesting because in some of the Chung Do Kwan forms, there is a foot slide movement to certain blocks and hand techniques. Now, did I use the foot slide/skip in class when sparring? Not really. And when I did, I never used it with a high kick. Even though I could kick high, I never used high kicks because outside of one student who was taller than me, I was taller than everyone else in my class. So with the reach I have with my legs, I could tag anyone anywhere and still have distance on my side that they couldn't reach me.
It's interesting because when I started WTF TKD I tried doing the bouncing on my feet when sparring, but it didn't take hold, as far as constantly bouncing when sparring. I was able to use it along with how I sparred at the Chung Do Kwan school.

But DC, Machida, Silva, Rockhold all had respect for him. Rockhold said Seagal almost broke his wrist. Now if Rockhold was an average Joe I'd say ok he's being a egotistical dick but since Rockhold is a trained fighter I wouldn't say Seagal was trying to pick on someone weaker then him. I think the one thing that can be said with respect to all opinions out there that there are probably not many men in the world who can do those aikido or aikijujutsu clinch grappling techniques better than him; whether it be due to his experience, talent, size or a combination of them all and we can bring up his lack of competition expertise or other lack of evidence but at the very least Seagal has not been badly exposed in public yet, which is consistent with his confidence deriving from real achievements even if the techniques have a low probability of working in a real altercation. So in so far as it comes to the mastery of those techniques he's right up there with the very best and if the techniques don't really work it's not really his fault but the fault of the art itself.
As an analogue, in the early days of the high jump (track and field event) people used the scissoring technique, which has been completely abandoned today. Men were able to clear a height of 6'3 at least with that technique. Nowadays they use a technique called the Fosbury flop, which is considered far more effective. It still does not take away the fact that the man and women of the old days were able to clear the bar using the scissors technique and overcome heights that most people could not do with far more economic technique. The technique in the early days may have been relatively inefficient but if you worked hard on it and had the right talent you could beat most people in high jump with it. I think this applies to kempo karate, aikido, aikijujutsu, wing chun etc. which are all antiquated arts or arts based on sketchy ancient philosophy despite their modern origin. Of course fighting is more complicated than the high jump. Something like BJJ, TKD or boxing may have, by far, the best technique for dominating one isolated range of fighting but to say that BJJ, TKD or boxing alone makes you a master of fighting would kind of be akin to saying that mastering the Fosbury flop in the high jump makes you the perfect decathlete.

These are really great videos! I especially love the ones where you interviewed Steven Lambert and Conrad Palmisano to debunk Steven Seagal defecating himself by being choked out by Gene Lebelle. There is another one out there that has been going around for years too that it would be cool if you got to the bottom of: it's the one where supposedly Van Damme challenged Seagal to a fight at Sylvester Stallones's party and Seagal "wanted none of it" according to Stallone, and fled to where Van Damme tracked him down again at a Miami nightclub to try again to "kick his ass" and again Seagal "backed down". I don't believe it for a second. I don't believe Seagal would ever back down from Van Damme under normal conditions, but if he did it would be because of his martial arts discipline not to get involved in unnecessary street fights, or something along those lines. I like Van Damme too, am also a fan of his, but Van Damme himself said this happened, and I think there's more to the whole thing or the story got all twisted like the Gene Lebelle incident. Keep up the great videos, and I really appreciate your perspectives on not just the content you're presenting but your views on life itself!

Let me share with you, "just punching them in the face" is not as effective as one may think in self defense.
Many predatory men can eat punches , especially if their bones structure is larger than your own, and quite often a punch to the face only shoots up their adrenaline , gives them a massive adrenaline dump, now you've activated them , making them much stronger, feeling no pain by flooding them with more adrenaline with a punch to the face.
Body shots, neck strikes, joint locks, submission joint breaking and strangle holds/choke holds don't flood them with adrenaline in the same way as a punch to the face.

not to mention the feints or simulations of techniques.

A few Notes: 1) Lees sidekick was not a result of superior genetics. He used to train this kick on a custom made heavy bag that was 4 foot in diameter.. and weighed over 400 lbs. That was in addition to throwing 2000 kicks every single day... according to whats been said. Lee was born with one leg being shorter than the other.. and I believe he only had one Testicle. I think I read his vision was not that good either. Anyway... the point is that most Attributes can be developed. A baby is not born to walk right out of the womb. Everyone starts out with nothing.. and builds to something. The more time and energy you put into certain developments... the more likely you will be at Appearing to be a "Natural".. or "Supernatural".
    2) Bouncing: If you are mid-air when the OP clashes with you... you have no ground support strength and structure. Furthermore.. if someone times things well... they can catch you mid hop, so that you cant move out of the way in time. Not only do you lose power in your strikes, and lose stability... but you are also expending way too much energy in the process. That fatigue will cause your kicks power, speed, and accuracy, to suffer greatly.
    3) The Makiwara: Is not a bad training device. However, I do highly recommend getting a canvas wall bag, and packing it solid with coarse grain beach sand (NEVER use play-sand. It creates fine dust clouds, that can cause cancer when breathed into the lungs). The sand is just soft enough that it will conform to the shape of your knuckles... but then it will become hard as a rock. This will prevent damage to the knuckles shape.. but still develop a high density "Iron-Fist". Not only that.. but since the wall its mounted to isnt going to move.. the impact forces challenge your entire internal structure... from fist to feet. You cant get that from a Flexible, moving, soft...target.. such as a heavy bag. The makiwara is similar to a wallbag.. but it can cause flattening to the knuckles.
    4) I personally use Toe Stabbing kicks often. One has to condition the toes well, so that they will not break. The kick is very non telegraphic.. and can be chained into multiple strikes, similar to Snake style finger strikes. I often target the inner thigh muscle, the inner hip fold, groin, abdomen, and could be used on the throat / chin.
In addition... most kickers fail to land, because they are throwing their kicks from way too far away. If you throw a front kick from less than 2ft away... the OP will likely not even SEE it in their vision. And.. since its so close... the penetration depth you get... will be tremendous. It can easily launch an OP many feet away from where they stood... if one choses to use it more as a push vs an Impact kick.
    5) As an artists of 28 yrs, in various artforms.. I can visually tell that Seagal has Masterclass level output / skills. This is a real rarity in todays modern Era. Many artists and casual observers cant visually tell the difference. Its only when you FEEL it... do such people realize that there is a Monolithic difference.
    6) Its not just about finding the right teacher. All teachers have something of value to teach. The main thing that makes the difference... is training at your full capabilities / intensity... and the amount of hours / reps (work). You must train inside of class... as well as Outside of classes. You should fully master each and every technique, to the maximum potentials that your body is capable of. This is especially most critical, of the very basic Foundations of your arts techs. For if you have a shaky base... anything built on top of it.. will likely crumble and fail, under any bit of stress and strain. I used to train a minimum of 4hrs every day... 365 days a year... and didnt ease up until about my 5th year. The path to Masterclass level potentials, takes a serious amount of dedication, and sacrifice. Nothing of serious Value, comes easy... and there are no real Shortcuts, to greatness.
    7) As for Spirituality in the arts... In general, it merely means having good morals and ethics. Other than that... there are special slow moving forms, such as seen in arts like Tai Chi, Qigong, Falun Gong, etc.. that are designed to both create a moving meditation (discipline and silence of the mind), as well as actual physical healing / renewal. It can also often lead to feelings of Euphoria (Nirvana) / a deep connection to the Universe (G0D). Though, some of the deepest mental and spiritual development comes from static (laying or sitting) meditation practices. Also.. the use of deep yogic breathing exercises.. also enhance both physical power output levels.. as well as your bodies superior enhanced physical abilities.. such as increased circulation, iron body tissue swelling, greater lung capacity, and higher overall O2 levels.. down to the cellular levels.

I genuinely believe that someone with a great foundation in the combat sports and MMA would get a lot from Seagal both tactically and philosophically. Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida both knocked out opponents with a front kick they claim Seagal taught them (there's video of it that can be easily found on RUclips!), and it's the same front kick Seagal showed Jesse and his brother in their video. Seagal definitely has a history of spewing BS about his life (I know someone personally who has a Seagal story where he did a bit of fibbing, but I will not share the details publicly; she did say that he was very nice to her though), but his knowledge of martial arts, especially traditional arts, is worthy of everyone's respect. Would Seagal be able to handle himself against an elite grappler or MMA fighter? I doubt we'll ever get to see him go head to head with one, but I genuinely think that, if he got a hold of your one of your limbs, he'd put you in some very serious pain very quickly, no matter who you are. I think his brand of aikido could still be very useful for the modern combat sports-based fighter in a self-defense situation, especially for pain compliance. BJJ black belt Roy Dean has a background in aikido and has integrated it into his BJJ. Worth checking out.

I'll give you a tip. Real combat skills is everything and Bruce Lee meant that when he said to be like water.
I naturally understood standing and ground (and everything in between later) as a young kid fighting all the time before I started learning what I know today and I lived in an area that was rough and one had to be tough or somewhat used to the environment and would fight if they had to and that's how one got along and this was the 80s and 90s and it never stopped as an adult to the present. In fact just 8 months ago one day after the other, two guys gave me a hard time for no reason and one was around my age just a little younger and the other a Gen Z Oscar Meyer and I left both on the ground traveling back in time that I'm sure they woke up thinking they were their great great grandfather.

When I get back after spending an 1.45mins there; it seems like the rest of the day just accelerates and the next minute I know am getting ready for bed again. I can't seem to slow the day down. Ha

I'm an evening gym guy, after work... Usually combine the stretching, martial arts and weights all in 1 session.

This is what Frank Dux is not. Seagal can show us and not just tell us. Only the haters can watch this and not admit the man has a high level skillset of legit dangerous techniques. Not saying he'd go in and win an amateur wrestling match or a boxing match or whatever in his prime against an elite opponent in their own rule set, but he'd quickly hurt most people badly in a street fight.

@The Crazy Amateur Runner except no. Have a look for yourself. One of these is not like the other. Dux shows a tiny bit of "techniques" in a long video here and it's all in super slow motion. If you're being honest with yourself you should be able to see the difference. ruclips.net/video/gfbOIPsspk4/видео.html
