  • What is Steven Seagal really like in real life? In this video, I do a reaction/commentary to Rokas' recent video @MartialArtsJourney titled "He Met Steven Seagal and told me the Truth"; which was in reference to Jesse Enkamp's time he spent with Steven Seagal and the 2 RUclips videos he made.
I also share my unique thoughts based on the phone conversation I had with Steven Seagal and compare to see if my experience about the actual man was similar to Jesse's.

"A lie unchallenged becomes the truth."
Your correct, sir. Michael Ovitz (sp?) was taking lessons from him and thought "this guys a natural..." Just his demeanor, speech patterns, attitude and, of course, love him or hate him, he has a *ton* of skill/talent on the mat. He said "just be yourself and the rest will just come."
For better or worse, whatever your tastes, "a star was born."
As a person who is a martial artist and the same size and build (during his early films) as Seagal, I can tell you that it *absolutely* provides a certain advantage and "presence," on and off the mat/screen, that comes with being that stature. It's not just "filmed up," it's an experience being around people like him (I was into the popular, west coast tournament scene, like the Ed Parker Invitationals, etc. during the late 70s/80s and have seen/very briefly met him) and he definitely has that charisma that people talk about and an instructor of mine (one of Norris' right hands when I studied Tang Soo Do in the 70s) saw Bruce Lee at a tournament in the 60s and said that you could tell "just by the way he walked by" that there was something very special and "next level" spiritually about him, even before he became "famous." Little did he know... And even Lee has more than his share of critics.
People like to "cut down" Seagal because they *don't* know him and being able to "take someone down a peg" who had made it to the top and was publicly revered, then was discovered to actually be human (how dare he, right?) makes them feel better about themselves. They're often the same people who teased and bullied people as kids, for the very same reason. There's absolutely *no way* they could take him on in a fight so, they take him on with nasty comments and rumors in comment sections and media posts. No matter how you feel about his personality or personal life, he's absolutely a master of many styles and even today, in his "new form." Remember, he's old, made his mark/money and has a right to get fat, just like YOU. *But,* he *does* have a thyroid condition, as do I and it does affect your body. People just expect him to remain "leading man perfect" his whole life because he was "a star." He still has the hand speed and ingrained skills to more than be able to put a RUclips smart ass on the mat. That's why he moved out of the country... He got tired of mouthy people who were no where near him in ability (or proximity) and experience, with no personal knowledge of him at all (unless they did and had something to gain by slandering him) and would call him names, take rumors and perpetuate them as truths, etc. (and people looove their rumors, trust me) and he got tired of having to defend himself from lies and stupidity on a daily basis. I don't blame him.
Now, then... Don't get me wrong, I'm not a mindless fan-boy who thinks he's done no wrong, I know better. He's not a perfect person, by any means and has admittedly created more than enough of his own issues BUT, many of them he did not. Several, like what he *actually* did for the govt. were completely blown out of proportion and taken out of context by people looking for a problem, even if they had to create it themselves. The problem is his fame and notoriety which demands "perfection" from a fickled, American audience (I retired from the film/TV industry and worked for the largest production equipment company in the country so, I'm not just talking from thin air) and thats just not possible... Unless you manage to stay completely under the radar anytime you're not in front of the camera (which is *really* hard to do, even for people WITHOUT an ego), you're going to suffer the arrows of the "chair-borne warriors" who seem to think they have the right to throw stones, regardless of living in a glass house themselves.
Everytime I watch a Seagal video on "the 'Tube," I look at the comments and all I see are mindless, endlessly repeated comments about not being able to outrun a burger, etc.. Nothing else, just the same, 3 comments every where you turn. My point about how selfish and mindless people are, only concerned with getting a "thumbs up" from other, mindless idiots. And the irony is, the majority of them loved Seagal in his movies and had posters of him on their walls. Many still "like" him but are afraid to admit it in a comment stream for fear of being picked on by the other, "high IQ" trolls.
Give the man a break for being drug over the coals by an industry that loves you while you're on top, then forgets your name the moment your ratings drop and subjects you to complete scrutiny of your entire personal life and throws you to the "wolves." It's a tough cross to bare, just look at all the other "fallen stars" who disappear, become media fodder or take their own lives.
He's made a success of himself, even if he "Self destructed" in a lot of people's eyes, most laying in judgement, having never had any success to destroy, in the first place which is why they have to seek someone else as a target for their own sense of self worth.

Anyone whose skilled in martial Arts or in unarmed fighting can observe the man's body mechanics and see that he's a skilled budo master.
Those whom call him a fake martial artist are ignorant.
Real always recognizes real. He may or may not be a predator of females but he's certainly a martial Arts master.
He taught me his pistol shooting methods in early 90s and in the late 90s I was in the Army and my pistol shooting skills impressed key personnel whom asked my join the Army pistol team. And 5th Group members at Ft Campbell asked me to teach them what I was doing to shoot the way I did. (I taught them what I learned from Seagal Shihan).

There is a lot of B.S. out there against Steven Seagal for some reason. There are even people out there claiming he isn't a real martial artist or his martial arts are fake....which just goes to show how stupid and ignorant people are. I've never met Mr. Seagal but I remember seeing the opening scene of "Above The Law"; After Shuai Jiao Club practice several of us got together at somebody's apartment to watch a video tape of the new movie. Somebody in the club told me you've got to see this new guy, he's good. I had trained judo, Shuai Jiao and held a 1st Dan in American Kenpo and was like, "we'll see". When the dojo scene (CIA recruitment scene) came on and he started doing techniques on the Uke's my jaw hit the floor. I was like, "you're right. He is good". Anyone who says otherwise is just ignorant of martial arts.

There is a lot of bs surrounding Steven Seagal for some reason? Yes that's true for good reason or I should say reasons. He sexually harassed dozens of his female co-workers on movie sets, he bad-mouths other actors and Martial Artists openly, he over exaggerates his accolades, it's pretty well-known knowledge that he 'ran away' from Van Damme after he trashed him and Van Damme confronted him. He's divorced how many times? He's not a good person, he was sued several times for sexual harassment, he had to resign from his ceremonial police position after being found involved in some sex ring in Louisiana, he has very weird ties to Russia, he ran to the FBI for protection after he fucked with the Coloumbo Crime Family, he's a scumbag!

Steven Seagal was the reason I started taking Kung-fu as an early teenager back in 1990 in my hometown of Bakersfield CA.There was no reputable Aikido school so I researched the best Martial Arts school I could find and back then it was called Eric Nolan's Kung-Fu Studio. Back a few years before UFC 1 hit, now it's called Eric Nolan's Xtreme Training Center because of MMA.. Great memories very grateful for my experiences and nobody was more Badass on the screen then Sensei Steven Seagal in the 90's. 🙏🔊❤️🥋

As an Airborne-Airassault Light Infantry veteran and lifelong martial artist I agree with Seagal Shihan that on a battlefield in close-combat the last place a military warrior/Soldier wants to be is on the ground when the adversaries are armed with melee weapons and three to one odds.
I watched an Infantry brother named Pvt. Welch of Boston Massachusetts, a purple belt in Gracie Jiujitsu in the mid 90s, fight a collegiate folk wrestler who'd been bullying him.
Pvt. Welch took the wrestler (Pvt. Creech) to the ground, took his back, had his hooks in and was applying a rear naked (interlocking) choke.
One guy ran to get Pvt. Creech's buddies whom came running up, thought Pvt. Welch was killing Pvt Creech, and began futbal kicking & heel stomping Pvt Welch's head and neck.
Myself and two others tried to protect Pvt Welch but the wrestler's friends outnumbered us so they got in some vicious kicks.
Pvt Welch went to the Emergency Room in critical condition.
I had been practicing and pursuing Gracie Jiujitsu but after that I decided to pursue it no more.
I maintain the Jiujitsu ground escape techniques to get off the ground should a stronger attacker attempt to hold me down but for military hand to hand combat I sincerely believe BJJ is a no-go.
For Police officers making arrests and for females needing skills to defeat a single male date rapist or abusive spouse I'm a proponent of BJJ.
For military close-combat defense , where melee weapons like knives, daggers, rocks are involved, I don't believe it's suitable.
Infantrymen and Light-Infantrymen carry ALOT of extra weight in equipment, body armor, load bearing vest, Kevlar helmet, grenades, knife, sometimes pistol. . . So, just like the samurai bushi, we don't want to be submission grappling on the ground to establish position before submission while the opposition is ripping weapons off our load-out and we're ground grappling.
Samurai Yawara (Jujutsu) was about taking them down then deploying a weapon to finish the fight (just like U.S. military SOC-P).
The UFC is not a good representation of military hand to hand combat. Military SOC-P is the truth in military/martial Combatives.

Hollywood stunt men... especially back then, were Pussys. They were not trained to fight... and were not used to taking even the lightest of hits. Meanwhile... in Hong Kong... the actors not only all learned how to fight, and act... but also.. they tended to actually make mild to decent contact with each other, to "Sell" the hits.
I have 29 yrs of combat experience... and I can tell you, that if I do a demo on a person whom isnt a martial artist... its pretty easy for them to get a bruise from the bone to bone contact. Its not that Im intentionally harming them... nor am I using a lot of force. Its that their tissues and bones, are not able to clash with my "Iron Body" conditioned limbs, without suffering pain and some damages... even at very Mild levels of output.
The elder Hollywood, tended to use camera angles, to hide the fact that the actors are not connecting their strikes at all. But this comes at a cost, of looking unrealistic... and also limits the kinds of shots you can use.
Films like the Matrix.. where they imported Asian stuntmen, Trainers, and Choreographers... were a bit different. In such films, they made some actual physical contact... and thus, they were able to do a lot more kinds of shots, as a result.

I was already a brown belt in Yoshinkan Aikido when Hard to Kill came out and I was jacked beyond belief when I saw Seagal onscreen. I know people who trained with him and he is the real deal and was a showman, way back in Japan.
FYI, Yoshinkan is the style taught to the Tokyo riot police, not the namby-pamby stuff done by the son of the founder's school. Even in Yoshinkai in America back in my day, there were a lot of softies, but I was lucky to have a teacher (3rd dan) who was mind-boggling. He taught some of us Aiki-jujitsu on the side - that's when I began to see how Aikido could be used in a real combat situation.
All martial arts exist because they worked, and they were designed for specific applications. Aikido arose from the Samurai battlefield, where combatants often had armor, so punching was of limited use. And the swords would cut right through you, so there were no blocks, only parries or evasions. The joint locks and throws and stick fighting were added as well by the founder too. No ground fighting or sumo stuff, even though O-Sensei studied sumo for a time. Who is going to ground fight, in armor, on a battlefield. Most don't know these things or even care to consider them, but that is the the reality.
I still have a mixture of frustration and laughter when I hear so many people express their ignorant views of Aikido and how it works or doesn't. And I agree, the way much of it is done nowadays is just like how Tai Chi is done. Too few have any idea how to use it as a martial art, but it IS one because it works if used properly by a skilled practitioner. But as in many other areas of life where the ignorant loudly and proudly proclaim their views, I've learned it's just how life is.

Unlike Van Damme, though, Seagal had worked on a few movies as a fight choreographer before he became an actor. Receiving praise from freaking Toshiro Mifune isn't a small achievement, given what a huge star he was back then, and neither is working with John Frankenheimer or training Sean Connery for a role in a James Bond movie.
Plus - Seagal produced and wrote "Above the Law", which certainly helped him get the role.
And also - Van Damme barely spoke English when he started acting. Seagal, being an American, never had this problem.

I am weary of this discussion but I guess people have to be informed and trained.
Sea gal is a Master in the true sense. He doesn’t have to size you up or even think about what he’s going to do in a fight because he is an Aikido Master. He will use whatever you do against you so fast you won’t believe it. And give you some extra pain too.
I had to learn the hard way myself when training so I just went off on my Aikido Sensei on morning. He deflected and slapped me so hard I saw stars. So I tried to kick him and that was it. He deflected and stepped in close and swept me to the floor.
That was enough for me to know never engage a guy who knows Aikido.
My only reservation would be to have a really strong wrestler who would attack the legs and go to the mat right away. Even then he would take something away from you to make you not want to try it again.

Wow Viking! I take a little break from watching RUclips channels, come back and find out you talked to Steven Seagal!
Yes, there is definitely a thin line between ego & confidence. The thing is martial artists and especially instructors to many degrees walk back and forth over that line. And the instructor has trained for a long time, even more so. I've come to see it as "it is what it is". DO such in instructors become humble as they get older, yes, I believe they do
As I was watching the video, I had an interesting thought. Maybe a reason why many people put Steven Seagal down about his physical ability because he's gain weight over the years is that, as far a people in the West/The United States aren't used to seeing a big and tall man move o fat and not look sloppy or uncoordinated. The only person that comes to mind that is a big person but not a tall person is Mike Tyson but he is fast and coordinated. We just aren't used to seeing that., so people don't know how to handle that.. We see Sumo wrestlers move, but do we say that they aren't in shape or that they cannot move? No, we don't. Ed Parker. was a big man his entire adult life, but none of his students, friends, colleagues will ever say that he wasn't fast or couldn't move. We don't say Sammo Hung is out of shape for a big guy, but he is fast and agile.
I can understand why Seagal feels the way he does about Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Using the name "jiu-jitsu" for the Gracie's style was basically for name recognition. At the time, Japanese Jujitsu was the known martial art, also was Jigoro Kano's Judo. The Gracie style had to stand out. While that really seems to be a priceless marketing strategy that has worked out for the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, because there's that misunderstanding it's a better martial art than Japanese Jujitsu not knowing and understanding that it is a martial art that's a descendant from Japanese Jujitsu & Judo. Going to the ground to fight would definitely go against the philosophy of the Samurai taking an opponent out quickly and efficiently. I understand the need for knowing how to fight if on the ground, but to default to going to the ground. What happens when there is not enough space at all to go to the ground, what do you do?
Steven Seagal the Marlon Brando of martial arts acting...wow! Yea, I can see a resemblance in them. The only issue I have in the comparison is that Brando was a classically-trained actor. But, if you make the comparison in the context of their expressions when in character, things like that...then yea...I guess you could make that comparison. Yea, how many actors and actresses can make a living being characters that are basically who they are in real-life and that actually works for the specific character? As I think about it, it wouldn't be a stretch to not think that each of the characters Steven Seagal has played are parts of his actual personality?

Steven is one of the greatest actors in marital arts movies along with Scott Adkins van Damme, Mark dacascos, Jeff Spekman, Viking Samurai(coming soon), Keith Cooke (hirabayashi), keith Vitali, loren Avedon and Chuck Norris, His aikido technique for me levels up to a master. He did many good movies and as much as he does straight to dvd lately he is still great. He made a music album in which he does a duet with Stevie Wonder and actually toured with his own band at one point, starred in 2 TV shows, marketed an energy drink, Russian firearms, and even his own aftershave. And people make fun of his movies, but he cranks them out so quickly and cheaply that they can't help but make money and get a following. He has a string of martial arts schools and, yes, he DID teach Anderson Silva that kick, as well as coach Lyoto Machida. Now he's a Russian citizen and personally knows Putin.
