    Thank you for taking the time to do this vijeo. I just received a neglected and abused mower and was having trouble with it starting from the key. Turns out a previous "mechanic" s ... wired the kill wire to the light switch. And the charging wire was left disconnected in it's harness connector along with the lights wire. So, nothing was charging the battery... and if the engine was running you couldn't shut it off with the key.

    Thats the same one i have works great but needs a new crankcase gasket probably not to difficult to put on i was looking for if i got my pieces hooked up right to my 12 hp ic briggs and its a single cylinder engine
    Ive just spliced into the yellow and red wire thats coming from the stator and hooked the the rectifier up to those two wires but i still don't know if I've hooked it up right its probably wrong im guessing
    The mower was missing a few parts when i got it some part pieces came with it and i put all those back on it still doesn't have a ignition relay box but works ok without that part it worked fine without the rectifier to but the battery gets drained
    I've not yet tested it with a new battery to see if it stays charged up or will it get drained because I've got the rectifier hooked up wrong im not sure but didn't wanna drain a new battery or mess it up
    I bought the right rectifier for the model of engine just no instructions on how to wire it up the right way and then im not even sure on the single cylinder 12 hp briggs engine originally used those parts i know all my other engines do use them i know if it doesn't have something wired to the engine then what puts charge back to the battery

    Basically all these wires, IF your going to use a key switch will end up at the key switch. On the back of the key switch are letters that indicate what wire goes where. M G L S , M is for the magneto or coil that is the kill switch. G is ground , L is for the lights , S is for the Solenoid and that wire you should install a inline fuse. There are videos out there that explain this better than I can. But you get the idea.

    Heres one for ya, I am working on a 36" cut Statesman rider with a 18HP Briggs & Stratton Intek twin.
    I had it running with the assistance of a battery charger and the last time I turned it off I saw something smoking, turned out that the kill wire fried at the joint connector that goes to both coils.
    I removed the kill wire from both coils, still not getting any spark from either coil, both coils tested 4.5 ohms.
    What am I missing.

    The red charging wire goes to the + side of the battery?
    I put an opposed twin from an old Craftsman rider into a not very old JD 100 that I bought for almost nothing because it had a blown motor.
    Now I'm just trying to get everything working as it should.

    • @LonniesGarage

      Look for the diode in the wire. That’s a good sign it’s the charging wire. Always test the wire before you hook it up. Make sure it’s running and check the voltage in the wire

    So this is DC power coming through those two wires ? And if so what keeps your battery from over charging. Like wheres the voltage regulator ?

    • @kenhilson786
      @kenhilson786 5 лет назад

      No. After connector one is dc to battery and one is ac to lights. The diode in red changes that one from the ac to dc. Other stays ac

    Is this the same as a 17hp briggs? Im trying to wire to up and cant get it to charge. the charging coil shows -16volts and 3400RPM? when metering the battery it shows 12.6v off and 12.7 volt while running?

    • @fred306801
      @fred306801 7 лет назад

      It will work for awhile but your draining your battery. By design this is suppose to keep your battery charged. A battery is suppose to stay around a certain charge. When you drain the battery down to low levels and then recharge it the battery will not last to long. IF I were you I would replace it, look around for a old junk engine.

    • @kenhilson786
      @kenhilson786 5 лет назад

      No need to take it out but you'll need to use a charger on your battery between uses. Assuming you dont have electric pto.

    do the charging wire and head light wire have to be connected for the motor to start?

  • @AlwaysFreeAmerica
    @AlwaysFreeAmerica 8 лет назад +1

    So, if I understand right (a rare event in my world it seems) the diode in the red wire provides rectification to convert the ac from the alternator to dc to charge the battery and no other rectifier is anywhere in the charging system? What provides voltage regulation? The more I learn, the dumber I get.................

    • @LonniesGarage
      @LonniesGarage  8 лет назад

      The diode is to keep it from back feeding

    • @AlwaysFreeAmerica
      @AlwaysFreeAmerica 8 лет назад

      In other words, rectification. I know diodes only allow one direction of flow, that's a basic of electronics.The question is what provides rectification? What provides regulation?

    • @jamesflores9456
      @jamesflores9456 7 лет назад

      the stator probably doesnt have enough juice to fry anything

    • @gyroonesix5862
      @gyroonesix5862 6 лет назад

      The battery is used as the rectifier. The diode converts a/c to 12.5-14.5 d/c volts, at around 6 to 8 amp. Crude, but works.

    • @kenhilson786
      @kenhilson786 5 лет назад

      Diode converts ac to dc to charge battery. No regulation and in theory battery could overcharge but since output is only 2-3 amps it's not likely given engine running time per start. Lucky to get recharged from starter drain. That said I've overcharged a battery by leaving an unregulated trickle charger on way too long.

    I have that engine i still have to take it apart and do its case gasket but been working on 2 other engines they're both briggs and the other single cylinder ic briggs i have it hooked up i suppose right but still have to jump start it because it has a old battery it works good after giving it a jump i like the old ic because it starts right up and my leaky twin briggs does
    The twin briggs one is gonna go on a Lt155 john deere mower because Kohlers replacement parts are dodo made wrong and im just done fucking with single cylinder Kohlers anymore i had enough of they're bullshit and the bullshit replacement parts for them that are made wrong if Kohlers metal was dipped right my Kohler engines parts would work right like all my Briggs do because the briggs parts are made right the metal is dipped to keep it from corroding Kohlers are not thats why the Kohlers coming off and the twin briggs is gonna go on
