  • This Wheel Horse B115 lawn tractor with Briggs and Stratton engine wouldn’t start after being stored for the winter. Troubleshooting showed that the kill wire attached to the coil was grounded, due to a faulty kill switch relay. NOTE: The ignition switch was in the RUN position during this troubleshooting.

    Awesome! Thank you soo much from people who just tinker and don’t work on this stuff for a living. Logical and easy to understand what you were looking for. I Will use this information to troubleshoot my riding lawnmower! Thanks again!

    Make sure your keyswitch is in the run position. Stop position grounds that wire.

    Bill here. Two questions about a 93 model briggs Vanguard 16h vtwin motor model 303777/ type0411-01 with 5526 undernieth/ date code93101211. It dies after 5 min of running at full throtle. Runs very smoothe till it just dies. I need to know how the carb fuel solenoid and the oil presure switch functions to kill the motor and how to bypass them one at a time to detect the culprit and the assess whether i have an oil pump problem or just a bad fuel solenoid. Seat switch was bypassed befor i got it and has been that way for a couple years i am told. Will probly replace that later as i like to have that feature working. in case Bob doesnt see this for awhile, anyone is welcome to jump right in there. I really need to get this girl running problem free as the high grass just doesnt wait. Thanks. Bill c.
    PS. Thought about the diodes splitiing the coils. Im kicking around the the thought that the motor is dieing after it gets warm. The time is about 3 minutes after i start it and run it full throtle befor it dies.

      the solenoid wire is a push conn take it apart if you have meter look for 12 volt on this lead in run pos if you have the voltage ok unscrew the solenoid from the carb ou should see a tiny plunger standing in the center of the solenoid ----put something under to catch the gas that is in the bowl that is a good sign if you have gas at this if not see if that tiny plunger is stuck it should move up and down freely has tiny spring under it push it up some time they get stuck if all checks ok reconnect solenoid and the wire next disc fuel line tween carb and fuel pumpput a can under the pump turn the key spin the eng you should see a nice stream of gas spurt out if so reconnect that hose next item is disc filter see if gas flow freely from the tank if still no gas may have to replace hose from the tank as a last resort remove the tank dump it see somthing is clogging the gromit fitting it is replaceable

    Is key in off or run position when kill wire is grounded?

    • @teppetrumpet
      @teppetrumpet  7 лет назад

      Turning the key off should ground the kill wire.

    • @okiebob48

      exactly was the key ever in run position when he was checking for short?

    • @teppetrumpet

      Yes, the key was in the RUN position when I did the troubleshooting. That's a good point, though. I should have clearly stated that in the video.

      Does fuel solenoid have power to it when it dies? has to have power at all times when key on to hold it open. Can cut spindle off to disable or replace with ss or brass bolt. Should be able to just unplug oil pressure switch and jumper plug, but I would replace switch to keep that safety. Sounds like possible sticking needle and seat in carb. And how long do you have to wait or what do you do to restart?

    My mower starts with the kill wire disconnected, but if it is connected to the coil the engine cranks but won't start, do you think my relay (interconnect module) is bad, or can it be the solenoid, ignition switch, or safety switches ?

    • @teppetrumpet
      @teppetrumpet  5 лет назад

      Tom Dee ,
      Yes I think your kill wire relay is bad, same as mine, if the engine starts with kill it wire disconnected.

    • @kommoncents5853
      @kommoncents5853 5 лет назад

      I don't think it's a relay but it may be. What it looks like is a circuit board with sealed rosin covering all around it with no spade terminals. It has 4 connect points that go into jaws time harness (3 to the left [spaces] 1 to the right, there is continuity on pins 1 & 3

    • @kommoncents5853
      @kommoncents5853 5 лет назад

      I don't think it's a relay it is a circuit board module filled all around with clear resin, according to this web page www.electro-tech-online.com/threads/safety-interlock-module.4160/ it tells the mower to shut off if someones off the seat and or the blades are engaged. This module may be bad as it has never shut off if i get off the seat. I will try to restart with the blades engaged to see if theirs a problem at that point. But as far as the kill wire grounding the coil I will do some more testing.

      Can i still run it with the wire disconnected?

    • @kommoncents5853
      @kommoncents5853 3 года назад +2

      @@JoseNunez-yn4tz what I did was I put a toggle switch on the kill wire and mounted it to the body of the mower, I turn the switch off to start the mower and run it, when I'm finished and ready to park the mower I flip the switch and the mower shuts off. If I have to start it again I just flip the switch.

    I’m betting this problem wasn’t caused by the kill switch but probably by the PTO interlock switch not being in the correct position (ie operated when it shouldn’t be or not operated when it should be). The wiring “diagram” is very poorly done and doesn’t show the internals of the PTO interlock switch.

    clean the contact points... looks like yours are rusted... corroded... the battery let you know the contact points were not able to make the relay open/close..

    m lead on ing. switch is where gd is coming from only in the off pos if gd is on that lead in run pos. the ing switch is bad its coming apart in side i dont think a relay is involved in this you can run with this lead cut till you get a switch if you have a solenoid on the carb that will kill the eng in the off pos for those folks with this prob this wire on mine is awhite wire just above the muffler you can cut this lead and cut grass ok till you get a switch------ once a switch starts failing it causes other problems

    This would be a good video if the guy would stop mumbling to himself and remember we are trying to understand what he is seeing and saying..had no idea what he was hooking up to in some of the tests if I wasn’t familiar with it first...Slowdown point things out and speak clearly.. thanks.
