The steam locomotives of Wankie Colliery 1990

  • Recorded in 1990 at what was Zimbabwe's 'premier' industrial steam location, 'Wankie Colliery'. The Pit was served by a steep branch line from the national railway system at Thomson Junction which was worked by the colliery's own locomotives... all of which at this time were 4-8-2 tender engines very similar to SAR's class 19D.

      I quite like it. In the local language it's Hwange but with the prevalence of malarial mosquitoes I can see why English Civil Servants would have called the town what they did. All in all Africa deserves better. I hope Zimbabwe prospers in the future. It's a land of plenty really
