Wish I was a kid in your class. I saw your different units and recalled a potential contemporary of your kids, Angelina Jordan. She has arranged and performed 120 covers and released 3 originals, all by age 15. She has sung in just about every genre, but she has always had at her core, the wisdom of the classical jazz performers of yesteryear. She arranges everything she performs, making the song become her voice. If I was taking K-12 music, I could find wonderful exemplars in Angelina.
If you haven't heard of her before, here's her bio. Angelina is a child prodigy, who started singing at 1 1/2 years old. Her mother and grandmother loved jazz, so in a very few years her pitch perfect voice soothed rather than high pitch and continuous belting so common in many other young excellent singers. She made a series of music studio covers at 6. In 2013, the 7 year-old barefoot girl* was the last to walk onto the stage for the Norway's Got Talent season 2014 auditions. She was so young you could see her permanent teeth growing in during NGT. She began with her arrangement of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday" (young Angelina set the lyrics to tell a different story, fitting her 7 year-old mindset). One of the judges, Omer Bhatti (considered to be part of the M. Jackson family), said in an interview "“We were in shock when she started to sing…it was a discussion whether it was an impression of that kind of music (ref to Gloomy Sunday performance) or the real deal…and the next time we saw her, she owned the stage, when she rehearsed, she told the bassist what she wanted and had full control. And we were like…ok…you are a star…we have something special here…”.
The next performance was barefoot* Angelina singing acapella "I'm a Fool to Love You" (Frank Sinatra). For the semi-final, Angelina (still barefoot*)performed "Bang, Bang" (Nancy Sinatra). While her other performances, newly turned 8 year-old Angelina set a new high water mark singing "Summertime" (George Gershwin), stunning the judges and audience with her mature performance (yet again barefooted*). She won Norway's Got Talent season 2014, and at 8 years old, appeared on "The View" singing "Fly Me to the Moon" (Bart Howard, Kay Ballard). You may not have heard of her in the intervening years as her parents turned down 90% of the engagements of labels, saying they wanted Angelina to have an ordinary childhood.
So, lots of Angelina information. There's certainly more to her story to add, but I wanted you, as an academic, to have this source material. You will find links below to the NGT performances as well as several other hits she performed by age 10.

    (* Barefoot explained)
    * You many notice that Angelina Jordan always performs barefooted, whether in front of a live audience or during a studio recording. This has resulted in her being given the title of "the Barefoot Princess" or "the Barfoot Princess of Jazz". The story is that when living in the Middle East, at age 6, she came across an orphaned girl earning money by weighing people in the street with a bathroom scale. She noticed how cold it was and that the 6-7 year old girl was not only barefoot, but had scars on her feet. So 6 year old Angelina took off her own shoes, shoes that she loved, and gave them to the girl. Angelina decided she wouldn't wear shoes in her performances to remind her of all the children in the world who had no parents, proper clothes, or shoes. Hence, you will hear her called the "Barefoot Princess", or the "Barefoot Princess of Jazz". Of the encounter, little 6 year old Angelina wrote in her diary: “The world is very strange. Right then and there I felt as if a door in my heart opened up, and it was filled with lots of lights. It was as if there was, from Earth to Heaven, a staircase. I climbed the stairs. To be able to do something for another human - it was such a big thing…hard to describe really.” In 2015, at 9 years of age, Angelina wrote a book about the encounter, making her the youngest published author in Norway. The book and the attire Angelina (13) wore for her "Bohemian Rhapsody" AGTC audition were designed by her grandmother who was a child prodigy in art.
