  • @chrislant4829
    @chrislant4829 3 года назад +5

    Great video Christian and vera. Vera made a good choice. Just be careful with the wheel spacers ; there has been cases of people losing wheels. I've got 30mm spacers on my defender but made sure the spacers had lock tight on the threads when fitting them. Keep an eye on your wheel bearings as apparently spacers put more stress on them.
    Enjoy !

    • @samrodian919
      @samrodian919 3 года назад +1

      Yes the wheel spacers do put the bearings under a heavier load. You can expect to have to replace them on a earlier interval than normal. Christian, I hope sincerely that the bearings are replaceable and that you don't have to replace the whole hub assembly. Although sometimes it's a blessing to replace the hub, as getting the bearings out can sometimes be a nightmare if you do not have access to a hydraulic press. Using the time honoured spacer and threaded rod can be a pain in the arse!

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  3 года назад +6

      @chris lant @SAMRODIAN We have replaced already too many wheelbearings on this car without having wheel spacers on😢 . We'll see, what happens. We love the look, and that the main reason why we put them on. If they don'T work out, well take them off. At least we can make then another video about it. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

    • @philhealey449

      Watch "Grizzly n Bear " suffer swivel failure, look at "Defender Mods and Travels" superb analysis of axle failures and I think you will decide to remove the spacers.....before this I'd also had only a vague view on reduced bearing life. It then seems obvious that countries like Australia prohibits spacers for very good reasons !

    Also, yesterday, I just stuck 18" BMW X5 wheels on my D4 with 265/60/18 Achilles Dessert Hawk Mts on, and they fit perfectly (after getting the centre bore skimmed ever so slightly and different lug nuts), and they look almost factory LR.
    I bought some 18" LR wheels and tried them on, which didn't fit, so I sold them again. Then later, I heard about using them with a spacer, so never got to find this out, always wondered! Thanks!

    Smiley faces all round! I would have stuck with the 19" option, they're awesome, and no spacers. You were very economical with the copper slip - between wheel and disc interface - corrosion city in salty weather and between the disc and hub. Also, from the previous video the floating brake pins, but, considering it's age the car is in remarkable condition. Given the nutters on the autobahns I'm glad the TUV do a good job of inspecting any upgrades - in the UK there's loads of "kids" running around with lowered and widened suspensions with no thought for geometry (you should realign the wheels as well) and clearances. Fortunately, they don't last long here, they usually crash, but we are very tolerant of these modifications for some reason, including the insurance companies.... Great, fun video.

    We run 275/65r18 on our LR3, on the stock wheels. Offroad it is better to have a slightly narrower wheel, as it keeps the beads tucked in.
    We have the OME coil conversion, with the HD springs and 2" lift. 235,000 km on the original wheel bearings, and it gets used offroad in Northern Canada. I've been lucky I guess. I love the stance with the spacers, but I have seen far too many failures to ever consider running spacers.
    It's still crazy to me all the regulations and inspections you have to go through. We do whatever we want in regards to modifications. If your vehicle looks obviously unsafe, the police can force an inspection, but it is pretty rare.

    Nice to see the upgrade guys! On my D4 I have 265/65 r18 and I love them. I didn’t install spacers as I don’t think my D4 needed them, but also my understanding is that you risk causing damage to the wheel bearings and other such things. Essentially because the spacer puts more distance and so leverage between the part and where the force is being applied.

      Yes, but our LR3 maxes out at 180 km/h on the Autobahn anyhow. So we are not really worried about it 😂. We run the 3rd bearings on at least one wheel too. Thank you Guys, Very Lovely video, it's very informative, we need some video about how to install 4x4 info dashboard and units needed and so on??, and if we can replace this with something more modern and new for offroad rides especially for LR3 and LR4 ??

      Thank you. We would like that too, but it's too expensive. We can only do the cheap chinese version unfortunately. 🙋‍♀️ Vera

    Great video.
    I use the Goodyear Wrangler AW (All Weather) tires 255/55 R19 111W.
    At an Irish price of €220 each, they're not cheap but long lasting tires. I had mine for over three years.
    However, make sure to check your wheel CAMBER and TOE regularly as this is what caused mine to wear prematurely (after the years!).

      We have had bearing failures all the time, at least one every year since 2016. And we just added the wheel spacers. I think it's just our thing. We have also installed from really expensive ones to cheap ones. But we do monitor our setup closely, no matter what. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

    Do you fell some difference with the spacers in turns?
    Tip: to clean the inside of the rims i use toilet liquid cleaner (chalk and rust solution)

    Great video. I am installing new front brake rotors, brake pads and wear sensor on my LR3 this weekend. I note your comment on "other brands when nobody is watching" Well I bought Bosch rotors today. I could have bought cheaper rotors, but decided on Bosch - what could go wrong with German quality right?? Well imagine my surprise and disgust when the label on the boxes says Made in China / Fabriqué en Chiné. I only hope the ones I bought were assessed by German QC inspectors. Bugger, I could have bought cheaper Chinese ones had I known. I will email you a picture of the boxes.

      Yes you are right, Bosch does not manufacture rotors in Europe. The best kept secret brand for brake rotors is Zimmermann brake discs. They are manufactured here in Germany, but are expensice. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

    Love your videos, they keep me inspired to fix my LR3. What work did you do to the fenders to meet the TUV requirements? Also fun fact about your Channel Lock pliers, the universal name for them is slip joint pliers. Technically Channel Lock is a brand name but were probably the first to make that type of plier popular which is why everyone calls them channel lock.

      We have not done any work to the fenders yet. We would like to talk to TÜV guy first, but haven't had the time yet. 🙋‍♀️ Vera

    I put a set of Toyo Open Country AT3 tires on my LR3 (Canada). So far seem to be quite good, just had a bit of a trip out on some gravel roads/trails and they worked perfectly. Stayed with the stock size so didn't need to use spacers or anything like that. Time will tell how good they actually are.
