I might be mistaken, but i think Alpha Squadron was what the player flew with in Star Wars TIE-Fighter. Been over a decade since i played that game, but it was a real improvement over the previous X-Wing simulator game. Today both games can be bought at both STEAM and GOG.com, should anyone be interested.
A bit of topic (I wished to mail you but couldn't find a way to) Nice Timber Wolf/Madcat figure you got there. I'm a mong time Battletech/MechWarrior fan and I appreciate the "easter egg". Anyway thanks you for your clear and useful videos ,-)
Louis R. Glad you noticed the Madcat. I picked it up back when I was playing the WizKids MechWarrior tabletop game. I still have way too many of the miniatures from that game lying around...
I still got mine. I played the game from Dark Age through Solaris VII. I had the chance to participate to the last French Championship. Good souvenirs. I wish they make another Clix based game for Battletech some day.
It actually bugs me that the interceptor expansion comes with 1) a tiny number of upgrades and 2) not very usable ones. I already own imperial aces, so short of the mini and a few pilots to use, It's hard to justify. But saying that I favor them over TIE F. I play casual and it feels just fine to use cards I have. I don't think unless you play competitively the game is totally prescriptive. Something like predator or outmanourvere feel good on an interceptor too. But again some trick with having to buy other ships to get it.
Dan Burrell Yep, that's how they get you. The best reason to buy this expansion is to get Soontir Fel. In my opinion he's still the best TIE Interceptor pilot in the game. But you are dead on about the cards. One of the reasons that Soontir Fel is so great is Push the Limit. Without it, it's tough to give him the stress he needs to make his ability work. With it, he's taking two actions on every turn plus gaining Focus. Imperial Aces is great because of the upgrade cards; this expansion is great because of Fel.
I ended up ordering this expansion anyway. I felt three would be entirely playable in a list. You are right It's the pilots that you buy it for. I've used push the limit a few times, but haven't used it properly I fear. I'll have to revisit my list builders. I thought perhaps a bomber with a three interceptor escort might be fun.
Dan Burrell You can also make a pretty scary triple Interceptor list with really decked-out ships. Soontir with Royal Guard title, Push the Limit, Hull and Shield Upgrade is pretty tough to kill.
Now that is an awesome idea. Looking forward to trying that out. I had a couple of push the limit Sabres paired with a decimator already ready to go, but ended up dropping them for TIEs... Its pretty clear interceptors are great at exploiting a mistake or a list weakness, as long as you handle them right.
Dan Burrell Yep, that's the trick with Interceptors. You have to fly them really carefully because if you mess up and end your movement right in an enemy's sights... well they're still just TIE Fighters and they die really, really fast.
Bayani Miguel Acebedo For purely casual play either ship is good. The Advanced of course gets you Darth Vader and he can be a lot of fun. Advanced feels a lot like an X-Wing with a bit of extra mobility. The Interceptor is great fun, too, if you want a super fast, maneuverable hunter on the table. Between the two, I've had more fun playing the Interceptor (especially Soontir Fel with Push the Limit).
Cheapstall Proxies are definitely one solution, but only for casual play. If you want to play sanctioned tournaments you'll need copies of the actual cards.
brethren1x Proxies are non-official copies of any game component. In the case of X-Wing, if you're playing a casual, non-tournament match, you could simply create your own version of a pilot or upgrade card, or find a picture of a card online and print it out. It's a great way to test out pilots and cards you might not be sure that you want to buy. Keep in mind though, that if you want to play in official tournaments and other events, you'll need to have actual copies of the cards.
Wow, thanks for the fast reply, that's amazing. And this proxy idea sounds really interesting. My friends and I are just starting to get into this so this should help us try new builds and learn!
Great reviews, very helpful years later
I love this guys reviews... Very smart advice too
Cheapstall Thanks!
Agreed, they need to release a deck so you don't necessarily have to buy every expansion.
Yes sir! I'm actually going to a 40k tournament this weekend in Missouri and "everything must be fully painted and primed with absolutely no proxies"

Would the Tie Inteerceptor work well with the Tie Defender using Countess Ryad?
Sure. They are both a lot of fun to fly. Use Ryad as your jouster (Push the Limit/x7 title work well on her) and the Interceptor as your flanker.
I love this game!!!

I think soontir fel should fly the tie defender so he could get a fourth action
That would be broken, especially if he had his same pilot ability...
I'm more of a casual player but cn i ask which is a more recommended ship? The TIE advanced or TIE interceptor?

My friends and I even created our own Empire corvette... That's like a super proxy lol
