In one of the episodes of season 2 of Star Wars Rebels, "Wings of the Master," the shipwright who built the prototype B-Wing called it the "Blade Wing." Since Rebels is official Star Wars cannon, this is the origin of the B-Wing. There you go!
Yeah, I just saw that episode over the weekend. Very cool stuff! It's good to finally get a definitive answer, and it was awesome to see the B-Wing (and what I assume was a Heavy Laser Cannon) in action!
I wonder if that prototype version will get an expansion. That composite laser function would have to either be nerfed or incredibly hard to use, though, since it would oneshot even huge ships in this game.
Well, according to Quarrie (spelling?) that composite laser keeps knocking out several systems when it gets used, including the hyperdrive, so if they give the B-Wing a "Blade-Wing"-title-card it will propably deal damage to the ship on usage.
+TH[O]RN UPSB Actually, I saw a site where the showed that the B-wing does in fact look like a lowercase "b", if you close the S-foild and look at it upside-down...
the fire control system is awesome on the tie punisher with redline, because you can have 2 target locks on the same ship, and get 2 without wasting another target lock and use it on a focus or barrel roll.
Good video. I enjoy your reviews of these miniatures, and they help me out quite a bit, as I am just starting to get into it as a nice, relatively simple strategy game to play with my nerd brethren. Keep 'em comin'.
Interesting. As far as I can remember Ibtisam, while she, according to the comics anyway, is a female, she is also a member of Rogue Squadron, a squadron made entirely of X-wing and has absolutely nothing to do with B-wings. But still psyched that Fantasy Flight has gone into such detail to include characters such as Ibtisam!
+Stephen Baradon Yea I actually read more about her to cause I remember her being in Rogue Squadron. Looks like she was originally a B wing pilot in the Battle of Endor and then joined Rogue Squadron later on and despised the X wing and hated the idea of flying it, but she ended up doing it anyways. starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Ibtisam
I know I'm late to this conversation but I was always under the assumption that the 'B' stood for 'blade' as the ship resembles a knife cutting through the air. I remember reading that years ago so i might be wrong.
Mark Trewren I like that. It's weird that the 'B' in B-Wing would stand for something while, as far as I know, the A-, K-, X- and Y- don't have any meaning other than being representative of the shape of the ship. It still seems weird to me that they didn't call it the T-Wing.
The T Wing would bring it in line with the other ships in terms of the letter theme, but Blade Wing is very evocative of a very cool ship, just remember it being called that around the time RoTJ came out. Love your videos btw as I'm a fairly new player they've proved invaluable, many thanks B-)
+Mark Trewren I believe the 'B' in B-wing stands for bomber. When I was younger I called it the T-wing until a friend corrected me one day. I also found it odd ( even back then) that the shape of the ship did not dictate its name. I lost the bet that day and as a result I owed him a Mountain Dew...
Give Ten Numb a Marksmanship and you get a guaranteed crit every time you roll a focus. Only problem is, you can't barrel roll if you're constantly using Marksmanship.
i read somewhere that it was because someone with the name B-something worked at industrial light and magic and they named it afterhim. of course that isnt the "cannon" reason, just the behind the scenes one
Ok I know this comes 4 years after the posting of this video. But you said you can't see a B in the shape of the fighter so you did not know why it is called a B-wing. So here is an answer to that question. Two new ships where made for Retune of the Jedi. And they where simply referred to as fighter A and fighter B. A-wing and B-wing. But canon wise the B stands for Blade.
There is an actualy T-Wing in Star Wars. Which doesn´t resemble a T at all XD But who know, maybe it was designed by Mr. T? Crazier things have happened.
It's supposed to look like a b if you use the one of the secondary wings and do a curved line to the primary wing, then another curved line to the last secondary wing. Funnily enough there is an actual T-wing
+Vlogmagog - I can accept that, although I think it's kind of odd that this is the only "-wing" design where you have to imagine the lines of the letter being there.
+The Cardboard Dungeon Personally I'd say it's because of the cockpit, because it revolves as the wings deploy, kind of creating the b shape, so the designation could be either focussed on that unique aspect of the design or the silhouette of the b wing undeployed? thanks for the vids!
Everyone craps on the B-Wing’s speed and agility. I’m speaking generally, not about this game. For a long time it was supposed to be slightly faster and more maneuverable than the Y-wing, with crazy weapons, armor, and shields. I missed the memo where everyone decided it was actually even slower and more sluggish. WTF. I love the B-Wing - it’s just so weird and different. Why must everyone nerf it so? In the old PC games, it was a far more effective fighter than the Y-Wing. It had shields for days that could be dumped into the engines to make the thing faster than an X-Wing, and still there would be sufficient defense left to take out capital ships. I’ve taken out TIE-Defenders with a B-Wing. With all cannons linked, it took two precise hits to disable the bastards. B-Wings rule. Also, the B-Wing SHOULD be able to make extremely tight turns along its main axis. All the mass is concentrated along the axis, so it should be able to turn on a dime...along that axis.
Philip is correct , bit there is another reason its called b-wing . it called a b -wing not only because of side view, but also because it has a blade shaped body.
I think the B-wing should have a white k turn O cause if your flying like that you could change your ship like this O----------- then just do like a 1 hard thingey mcbober I and you have like a gyrostabler thing to keep you really in one place. I
Yes, you're absolutely correct - the Phantom has an attack value of 4. This video was actually created before Wave 4 released, and I had originally planned to reshoot it with a script (this is the last unscripted video that I made in this series). However, I have a pile of X-Wing stuff that I still need to make videos for, so I decided to go ahead and use this one. I'll throw an annotation onto the vid though; good catch!
Thanks for that, I had no idea. I usually try to research pilots I'm unfamiliar with so I can at least get the pronouns right, but this one got past me. I imagine it's not the only one.

The ship also looks like the lower case "b" when viewed from the top depending which way the wing is oriented.
Quarrie also said it was fast and agile. So much for that.
It's called 'B-Wing' because, during filming of ROTJ, the two new rebel fighters were simply called 'Fighter A' and 'Fighter B'. The names just stuck.
+TH[O]RN UPSB exactly right.
+TH[O]RN UPSB Actually, I saw a site where the showed that the B-wing does in fact look like a lowercase "b", if you close the S-foild and look at it upside-down...
Just go the B a few days ago and it seems much more beautiful than I initially thought.
Might try ground attack games with it.

In rebels it says B stands for blade
well, calling it the t wing just sounds plane weird, but you are right about it being calling the t wing.
Good video. I enjoy your reviews of these miniatures, and they help me out quite a bit, as I am just starting to get into it as a nice, relatively simple strategy game to play with my nerd brethren. Keep 'em comin'.
Jonathan Lewis Thanks! I've got no plans to stop any time soon :)

Another awesome video.
The ship was originally called the blade wing but they shortened the name to b-wing
It looks like a sword

Mark Trewren Thanks for the comments. I'm happy that the videos have been useful for you!

It's called a bwing because the ship looks like a knife or BLADE. B is for blade.

I would have though "B" for bomb
i read somewhere that it was because someone with the name B-something worked at industrial light and magic and they named it afterhim. of course that isnt the "cannon" reason, just the behind the scenes one
+jakfrost2 hmm maybe, that's possible too
it kinda looks like a B when u look at it from the side

+Robeus Prime in star wars rebels they called it the blade wing...maybe that helps xD
If I've got Rebel Aces, should I get one of these?
Unless you really like B-Wings, you can get away without it. Rebel Aces has what you need to run some solid B-Wing builds.
It is based off of a lower case b. The round part of the b is the cockpit.
it's sort of funny watching your older videos. your later ones are much better. not that these ones aren't useful. :)
Yeah I didn't really know what I was doing back then. I can't go back and watch some of those videos...

it's short for blade wing
B wing. It looks more like a B in side profile. At least, that's been my assumption.
Philip Spence You're right, I can kind of see it now. Thanks!
Philip is correct , bit there is another reason its called b-wing . it called a b -wing not only because of side view, but also because it has a blade shaped body.
RodriBricks That's interesting. I hadn't seem that explanation for it before, but it makes sense.
I alwes thought B-wing as Bomber-Wing

B-Wing is short for Blade Wing
I thought the Tie Phantom had a attack of 4. This ship seems like a pain in the butt for me to fight against seeing i play imperial.

Its B-wing...
Ibtisam is a 'she' and a Mon Calamari ;-)
